The best web hosting for e-commerce in 2026 depends first on what you mean by “hosting.” A hosted commerce platform bundles the store software with its infrastructure; a self-managed WooCommerce store runs on hosting you choose and maintain. Choose the hosted model for a more bundled operation, or WooCommerce with separate hosting when you want more control and can take responsibility for upkeep.

What “e-commerce hosting” means

There are two different purchases behind the phrase. A hosted commerce platform supplies the store application and underlying hosting as one service. With WooCommerce, the store runs on WordPress, and you select a host separately; you or your team also manage more of the application stack.

This distinction matters more than a provider ranking. A hosted platform reduces the number of infrastructure decisions you make directly. A self-managed stack gives you greater control over the files, database, and extensions, but makes you responsible for coordinating hosting, software, security, and maintenance. Shopify’s comparison describes these differences from the perspective of a platform vendor, not as an independent audit: Shopify vs. WooCommerce.

Which model fits your store?

Factor Hosted commerce platform WooCommerce with separate hosting
Operating model Store software and infrastructure are bundled by the platform. You select hosting for a WordPress store and assemble the stack.
Control The provider manages the platform environment and its controls. You control the site files, database, and extensions, subject to your host and technical setup.
Maintenance The provider handles hosting operations and platform-level updates; you still manage your store’s content, configuration, and business operations. You or your service providers handle hosting and coordinate WordPress, WooCommerce, extension, and security maintenance.
Security responsibilities Shopify says its hosted offering includes encryption, access controls, backups, and network security; these are Shopify’s descriptions of its service. WooCommerce says merchants choose the host, while Shopify’s comparison says WooCommerce teams are responsible for hosting, PCI compliance, and updates. Confirm obligations with your host and payment provider.
Cost structure Platform subscription, payment processing, any transaction charges that apply, and additional apps or services. Hosting plus any paid extensions or services, payment processing, maintenance, and development when needed. WooCommerce says its core platform is free and has no platform subscription or revenue share for the core product.

How to choose hosting for a WooCommerce store

WooCommerce’s April 24, 2026 hosting guide distinguishes starter, growing, and enterprise needs. Its recommendations are the platform owner’s editorial guidance, not independently tested rankings. Use the criteria to assess a plan’s actual features and support rather than treating a provider name as a guarantee.

Starting store

For a new store, WooCommerce says to look for WooCommerce pre-installed, SSL, automatic backups, and a reliable uptime guarantee. These are practical basics: SSL protects connections, while backups give you a recovery point if an update or other change breaks the site. Check how often backups run, how long they are retained, and how restoration works; the guide does not state those details for every plan.

WooCommerce recommends WordPress.com Commerce or Bluehost Cloud for starter stores in its guide. Compare current plan terms and support before choosing; the recommendation is not proof that either is best for every new store.

Growing store

When traffic or checkout demand grows, assess whether the host can scale resources automatically, and whether the plan includes object caching, a built-in CDN, and technical support that specifically understands WooCommerce. These capabilities can address different bottlenecks: scaling adds capacity, caching reduces repeated work, and a CDN serves eligible content closer to visitors. They do not replace testing your own store’s checkout and extension workload.

WooCommerce recommends Pressable or Convesio for growing stores. Verify what scaling means in the plan, whether it happens automatically, and what limits or charges apply.

Enterprise workloads

For enterprise-scale needs, WooCommerce names WordPress VIP as its recommendation. At this level, assess the complete operating arrangement: capacity planning, security controls, support response, deployment processes, and recovery requirements. The guide’s recommendation is not an independent performance comparison.

How to compare the real cost

Do not decide from an introductory monthly hosting price alone. Add the charges that match your operating model and store:

  • Recurring platform subscription or hosting renewal price.
  • Payment processing fees and any transaction charges that apply.
  • Paid extensions, apps, themes, or other services.
  • Maintenance and security work, including paid support if you do not handle it in-house.
  • Developer time for setup, customizations, troubleshooting, and upgrades.

WooCommerce describes its core as free and open source, with no subscription or revenue share for the core product; hosting and payment processing are chosen separately. That does not mean a WooCommerce store has no operating costs. See WooCommerce’s pricing information for its explanation, and verify current fees with the relevant providers.

Shopify publishes a claim that its average total cost of ownership is 36% better than WooCommerce, alongside comparative implementation, platform-stack, and operating-cost figures. Those are vendor-published claims, and should not be treated as a universal result without examining the methodology and whether it matches your store. Shopify’s comparison also publishes performance figures, including an average uptime claim and a checkout comparison; neither establishes how a particular store will perform. Read the claims in Shopify’s comparison in that context.

Security, uptime, and support checks

Security is an operating responsibility even when the infrastructure is managed for you. Shopify describes its hosted model as including SSL certificates, encryption, access controls, backups, and network security. WooCommerce stores require coordination among the merchant, host, and software providers for hosting and updates. These are provider descriptions; confirm the actual plan terms and your own compliance obligations.

  • Backups: Find out what is backed up, how frequently, how long copies are kept, and how to restore them.
  • SSL and security: Confirm SSL is included and understand which party handles platform, server, and application updates.
  • Uptime commitment: Read the guarantee’s terms and exclusions rather than relying on a general percentage claim.
  • Support: For WooCommerce, ask whether support can help diagnose the application and extensions as well as server-level issues.
  • Traffic peaks: Ask how capacity changes during campaigns, what limits remain, and whether scaling incurs additional charges.

Shopify’s hosting article lists SSL, unlimited bandwidth, a domain, PCI compliance, and automatic hosting updates as included with its hosted offering, and displayed a starting price of $29 per month when published December 19, 2025. Pricing and terms vary by region and can change, so check the current plan and checkout details before relying on that figure: Shopify’s ecommerce hosting guide.

A practical decision path

  1. Choose the operating model. Select a hosted platform if you prefer bundled infrastructure and less direct hosting management. Choose WooCommerce with separate hosting if control over the WordPress stack matters and you can manage or delegate maintenance.
  2. Write down the store’s needs. Note expected traffic patterns, campaign spikes, catalog and checkout requirements, integrations, and any compliance or recovery requirements.
  3. Match the plan to those needs. For WooCommerce, check the stage-relevant features: SSL and backups for a starter store; scaling, object caching, CDN, and WooCommerce-aware support as the store grows.
  4. Calculate recurring and variable costs. Include renewals, subscriptions or hosting, processing and transaction charges, extensions, and maintenance or developer work.
  5. Verify current terms directly. Confirm regional availability, included features, support scope, resource limits, and renewal pricing before committing.
