You do not need an Apple TV to watch iPhone videos on a television. Use the TV’s built-in AirPlay, cast from a compatible iPhone app to Chromecast or a Google Cast receiver, use AirPlay through a supported Roku device, or connect the iPhone to the TV’s HDMI input with the correct adapter. The best choice depends on the TV, the app you are watching, your Wi-Fi connection, and whether your iPhone has a Lightning or USB-C port.

Choose the connection that fits your TV and iPhone

Start by identifying what the television can receive. AirPlay is the most flexible wireless option when it is built into the TV because it can mirror the entire iPhone display or send an individual video from a compatible app. Google Cast is useful when your video service has a Cast button, but it is app-based rather than a universal iPhone-screen mirror. Roku can receive AirPlay on compatible models. HDMI is the dependable fallback for a non-smart TV, an unreliable network, travel, or a presentation.

Method What appears on the TV Network requirement iPhone requirement Extra hardware Main limitation
AirPlay built into a smart TV Full-screen mirroring or a video sent from an app iPhone and TV on the same Wi-Fi network iPhone with AirPlay support None if the TV already supports AirPlay Some apps restrict AirPlay playback
Google Cast Playback from a Cast-enabled app iPhone and receiver on the same Wi-Fi network iOS 12 or later and a Cast-enabled app Chromecast, Google TV Streamer (4K), or Google Cast TV It does not mirror every iPhone screen or every app
AirPlay through Roku AirPlay video or screen mirroring, depending on the Roku model and source Normally the same local Wi-Fi network iPhone with AirPlay support AirPlay-compatible Roku player or Roku TV Compatibility varies by Roku model
HDMI cable The iPhone display and compatible video output None for the video connection Lightning Digital AV Adapter or compatible USB-C display/AV adapter Adapter and HDMI cable Protected content needs an HDCP-compatible digital connection

If the TV already has AirPlay, choose that first. If the service you use prominently shows a Cast button, Google Cast may be simpler. If you have a Roku or are replacing a TV with one, verify AirPlay support for the exact model. For a non-smart TV or no usable Wi-Fi, use HDMI.

1. AirPlay to a TV with AirPlay built in

AirPlay lets an iPhone send photos, videos, or the whole screen to an AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV. The TV does not need to be made by Apple. Apple’s setup requirement is that the iPhone and the AirPlay-compatible TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Before you start

  • Confirm that the television menu or specifications list AirPlay or AirPlay 2.
  • Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network name. A guest network, extender isolation, or separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks can prevent discovery.
  • Turn the TV on and leave it at its home screen or the input where it can receive AirPlay.
  • Keep the iPhone unlocked for initial pairing and make sure both devices have current software available for their models.

Mirror the entire iPhone screen

  1. Open Control Center. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the upper-right corner. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge.
  2. Tap Screen Mirroring.
  3. Select the television from the list.
  4. If a code appears on the TV, enter that code on the iPhone.
  5. Open the video, browser page, photo library, or other app you want to show. The TV displays the iPhone screen, including its portrait or landscape orientation.
  6. To stop, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and choose Stop Mirroring.

Send only one video

When an app or Photos supports direct AirPlay, open the video and tap the AirPlay button, which looks like a rectangle with a triangle. Choose the TV and let the television play the stream while the iPhone acts as a controller. This usually leaves the phone free for other tasks and can be more convenient than showing every notification or screen change.

When AirPlay is missing or a video will not play

  • If the TV is not listed under Screen Mirroring, verify the exact model’s AirPlay support, then check that both devices are on the same non-guest network.
  • Restart the TV, iPhone, and router if discovery worked previously but has stopped.
  • Some video apps disable AirPlay because of licensing or playback rules. Try the app’s own AirPlay button rather than screen mirroring; if both are blocked, use the service’s TV app or an HDMI connection.
  • If the picture appears but sound does not, raise the TV volume, check the iPhone’s selected audio output, and disconnect Bluetooth headphones or speakers that may be receiving the sound.
  • If the image is delayed, reduce congestion on the Wi-Fi network or move the TV and router closer together. A wired HDMI connection avoids wireless latency.

2. Cast from an iPhone app to Chromecast or Google TV Streamer

Google Cast works with iPhones running iOS 12 or later when the app itself supports Google Cast. Compatible receivers include Chromecast, Google TV Streamer (4K), and televisions with Google Cast built in. This method sends playback from the supported app; it is not a universal mirror of the iPhone’s home screen, Safari, or every installed app.

Check the app before buying a receiver

Open the video service on the iPhone and look for the Cast button, usually a rectangle with curved Wi-Fi lines in the lower-left or upper-right area of the player. If there is no Cast button, that app may not support Google Cast, even if other apps on the same phone do. The receiver and the app must also be supported in your region and by the service’s current software.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Cast a video

  1. Plug in the Chromecast or Google TV Streamer, or turn on the Google Cast TV, and complete its on-screen setup.
  2. Connect the iPhone and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network. Avoid a guest network that blocks devices from communicating.
  3. Open a Cast-enabled app on the iPhone and start a video.
  4. Tap the app’s Cast button.
  5. Select the receiver by name. If prompted, allow local-network access for the app in Settings on the iPhone; without that permission, the app may not find the receiver.
  6. Use the app’s controls to pause, seek, change subtitles, or disconnect. You can lock the iPhone after casting because the receiver obtains the stream according to the app’s design.

Cast troubleshooting

  • No receiver appears: confirm that the iPhone and receiver are on the same network, enable the app’s Local Network permission, and restart the app.
  • The Cast button is absent: update the app, check its help pages, and confirm that the particular service supports Google Cast. Do not assume that an app that supports AirPlay also supports Cast.
  • Playback starts and stops: improve Wi-Fi signal strength, pause large downloads, and check whether the service is experiencing an outage.
  • Only a black screen appears: the service may restrict the title, account, or region from casting. Try the service’s native TV application or a wired HDCP-compatible connection.

3. Use AirPlay through a compatible Roku player or Roku TV

Roku documents AirPlay streaming, content sharing, control, and screen mirroring from an iPhone, but support differs among Roku products. A Roku TV or streaming player must be an AirPlay-compatible model; the Roku name alone does not guarantee that feature.

Verify compatibility and enable the feature

  1. Check the exact Roku model’s specifications or Roku’s current compatibility information for AirPlay support.
  2. Update the Roku software and connect it to the same Wi-Fi network as the iPhone.
  3. Open the Roku settings for Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. Set AirPlay to on, then choose whether a code is required every time or only on the first connection, according to your household’s preference.
  4. On the iPhone, use the AirPlay button in a video app or open Control Center and select Screen Mirroring.
  5. Choose the Roku device and enter the on-screen code if requested.

Roku is a practical route when you already own a supported device and want the same AirPlay workflow used with a compatible smart TV. If your model does not list AirPlay, use a Cast-enabled app, the Roku app’s own channel, or HDMI instead of expecting a software setting to add the missing capability.

4. Connect the iPhone directly with HDMI

A wired connection is the most predictable option because it does not depend on Wi-Fi discovery. It also works with many non-smart TVs that have an HDMI input. The adapter must match the iPhone’s physical connector.

Choose the correct adapter

iPhone port Required adapter What to connect next
Lightning Lightning Digital AV Adapter HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV
USB-C USB-C display/AV adapter or a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI cable HDMI cable, unless the adapter includes a built-in HDMI plug

iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C, while older Lightning models need the Lightning Digital AV Adapter. USB-C output varies by iPhone and accessory, so use an adapter described as supporting display or video output rather than a charge-only USB-C cable. Apple’s USB-C guidance notes that HDMI 2.0-capable accessories can output up to 4K at 60 Hz where the iPhone, adapter, cable, and TV all support that mode.

Set up the HDMI connection

  1. Plug the Lightning or USB-C adapter into the iPhone.
  2. Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to an open HDMI port on the TV.
  3. Connect the adapter’s pass-through power port to a charger when the adapter provides one. Power is especially useful during long videos and may be required by some adapters.
  4. Turn on the TV and select the matching HDMI input with the remote.
  5. Unlock the iPhone and approve any accessory prompt. The iPhone display should appear on the TV; rotate the phone to landscape for widescreen video.
  6. Start the video. Disconnect the adapter when finished, then return the TV to its normal input.

Why a digital AV adapter matters

Use HDMI or another digital AV connection for ordinary television video. Apple notes that VGA does not carry audio, so a VGA setup requires a separate audio path and is a poor choice for watching videos. Films, TV shows, and some streaming apps also require an HDCP-compatible digital connection. An inexpensive or incompatible adapter can therefore leave you with a blank screen, an error message, or audio without video even though the plugs fit.

HDMI failure fixes

  • No picture: select the correct HDMI input, reseat every plug, test another HDMI port, and restart the iPhone and TV.
  • The phone says the accessory is unsupported: use a genuine or properly certified adapter designed for the iPhone’s connector and video output; a charge-only cable will not work.
  • Video stops after a few minutes: connect power to the adapter’s pass-through port and check for a loose cable.
  • Home-screen mirroring works but a movie is blocked: the app or title likely requires HDCP. Replace the adapter with an HDCP-compatible digital model or use the service’s TV app.
  • Sound remains on the iPhone: raise the TV volume, verify the HDMI input’s audio setting, and disconnect Bluetooth audio accessories.

Which method is best for common situations?

You already own an AirPlay-enabled TV

Use AirPlay. It requires no receiver, supports both Screen Mirroring and direct video playback, and is usually the shortest setup. Keep the same-Wi-Fi requirement in mind and expect some app-specific restrictions.

You mainly watch one Cast-enabled service

Use Chromecast, Google TV Streamer (4K), or a Google Cast TV after confirming that the service displays a Cast button on iOS. This gives the app control of playback without mirroring unrelated phone activity.

You have a Roku device

Confirm AirPlay support for the exact Roku model, then use the AirPlay steps. If support is absent, do not purchase on the assumption that every Roku product accepts iPhone mirroring.

Your TV is not smart or Wi-Fi is unavailable

Use the connector-matched HDMI adapter and cable. HDMI is also the sensible travel and presentation option when you cannot join the same wireless network as the TV.

You are buying for an iPhone 15 or newer

Begin with USB-C-to-HDMI options, checking that the adapter supports video and the resolution you want. Lightning accessories are for older Lightning iPhones, not USB-C models.

Practical limits to understand before you start

  • Mirroring is not the same as casting. Mirroring reproduces the iPhone display, including notifications and orientation changes. Casting hands playback to a receiver from a supported app.
  • Same-network wording is literal. Two devices connected to the same household internet subscription can still be isolated if one is on a guest network or a router has client isolation enabled.
  • App rights can override your connection. AirPlay, Cast, and HDMI availability can differ by app, title, account, and region. A successful connection does not guarantee that every video will play.
  • Resolution is negotiated. A claim such as up to 4K at 60 Hz for an HDMI 2.0-capable USB-C accessory applies only where the iPhone, adapter, cable, content, and TV all support it.
  • Wireless playback uses the local network. The internet connection may be fine while the local Wi-Fi is congested or blocked. HDMI avoids that discovery and network path.

A quick troubleshooting sequence

  1. Identify the route you are actually using: AirPlay, Google Cast, Roku AirPlay, or HDMI.
  2. For wireless methods, put the iPhone and receiver on the same ordinary Wi-Fi network, then restart the app and receiver.
  3. For AirPlay or Roku, check that the specific TV or Roku model supports AirPlay and that AirPlay is enabled.
  4. For Google Cast, verify iOS 12 or later, the app’s Cast button, and the app’s Local Network permission.
  5. For HDMI, match Lightning versus USB-C, select the correct TV input, connect adapter power, and use an HDCP-compatible digital adapter for protected video.
  6. Test a short video or a photo. If that works but one movie does not, the problem is likely the app’s playback rights rather than the television connection.

Bottom line

Apple TV is optional. AirPlay built into the television is the easiest all-purpose wireless choice; Google Cast is appropriate for apps that explicitly support casting; a compatible Roku adds AirPlay to a Roku-based setup; and a Lightning or USB-C HDMI adapter is the dependable solution for non-smart TVs, weak Wi-Fi, and offline use. Match the method to the TV and the iPhone connector, and check app and HDCP restrictions before assuming a cable or receiver is defective.
