You can play some original Xbox games without owning an original Xbox: use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S for titles in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog, or use the xemu emulator on a compatible PC. Neither option supports every game. Check the exact title first, then choose based on whether you have a disc or digital copy and, for xemu, whether you can supply the required system files and game image.
Choose the route that supports your game
| Option | What you need | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | A supported original Xbox game, in digital form or on disc | Playing a supported disc or digital title through Microsoft’s console program | Only selected titles are supported; disc play requires the disc to remain in the drive. Xbox’s current catalog and compatibility details |
| Xbox One family | A supported title in digital form or a supported disc; a disc-drive model for discs | Using an Xbox One you already own | Support is selective, and a compatible disc must stay in the drive. Xbox backward compatibility and Xbox Wire’s 2017 launch announcement |
| Xbox Series S | Digital access to a supported game | Playing supported digital titles on a disc-free console | Series S cannot play physical discs. Xbox backward compatibility |
| PC with xemu | Windows, macOS or Linux computer with an OpenGL 4.0-compatible GPU; xemu; Xbox system files; and a game image in XISO form | Readers who can manage emulator setup and legally make backups of their own media and system files | Setup takes more work, and game compatibility and performance vary. xemu, required files and disc images |
For the least setup, start by checking Microsoft’s catalog. If your title is absent, xemu may be an option, but only if your PC meets its requirement and you can obtain the necessary files lawfully. Neither route guarantees that every game will run.
Play through Xbox backward compatibility
Microsoft’s backward-compatibility program supports select original Xbox games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The feature is free for eligible games you own. The catalog is curated, not a promise that every original Xbox release works.

Check the title before choosing a console
- Search for the game in Xbox’s current backward-compatibility catalog.
- Confirm the edition and format you plan to use. Catalog support is specific to listed games; owning an original disc alone does not make an unlisted title compatible.
- Choose a console that supports that format. Series X and Xbox One disc-drive models can use supported discs; Series S requires digital access.
BLACK, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Fuzion Frenzy, Ninja Gaiden Black, Psychonauts and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic were among the games in the original Xbox One compatibility announcement in 2017. They are historical examples, not a substitute for checking the live catalog. Xbox Wire, October 23, 2017

What happens with a disc
For a supported disc game, the console downloads and installs the game to its storage. The original disc must remain in the drive while you play. That rules out physical-disc play on Series S, which is digital-only. A supported digital title can be played without inserting a disc. Xbox backward compatibility
Expect limits on online features and saves
- Original Xbox Live online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through this program.
- Offline co-op, local multiplayer and system-link can work when the original game supports them.
- These backward-compatible games do not receive Xbox achievements.
- Original Xbox save files do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. Saves made on a newer console can sync among Xbox One and Series X|S consoles through the cloud.
These limits matter if your reason for revisiting a game is online play, old marketplace content or continuing a save from the original hardware. Xbox backward-compatibility FAQ

Use xemu on a compatible PC
xemu is a free, open-source emulator for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its stated graphics requirement is an OpenGL 4.0-compatible GPU. The project cautions that performance depends on the computer and that compatibility reports are submitted by community members for particular emulator versions and systems. Look up the individual game reports rather than assuming a title will work reliably. xemu
Gather the required files
xemu needs three Xbox system files: an MCPX boot ROM image, an Xbox-compatible BIOS and a hard disk image. The project says an unmodified retail BIOS cannot boot games because required key DRM functions are not implemented; it describes using a debug or modified BIOS. xemu also offers a basic 8 GB disk image containing no copyrighted material and an unsigned basic dashboard. The project says the lawful way to acquire protected Xbox files is to dump them from a real physical Xbox. xemu’s required-files guide

That means xemu avoids buying an original Xbox only if you already have the necessary system files from a lawful source. The emulator project does not provide copyrighted Xbox BIOS or game files for download.
Prepare a compatible game image
A game disc needs to be represented as an XISO image; a file ending in .iso is not automatically in the format xemu expects. xemu documents making backups of legally purchased media and tools for creating or extracting XISO images. Some full “redump” images contain an extra video partition and are not directly compatible without extracting or repacking the game partition. xemu’s disc-image guide

Game-image and system-file rules vary by jurisdiction. Use media and files you are legally entitled to copy, and do not assume that downloading a file is lawful simply because it runs in an emulator.
Do not assume a disc-to-digital feature covers original Xbox discs
On August 26, 2026, Xbox announced a disc-to-digital entitlement feature for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games. Xbox said Cloud Gaming and Play Anywhere benefits apply where supported and noted that not every title would be available at launch. The announcement does not say that original Xbox discs qualify, so do not count on inserting one to obtain a digital entitlement. Xbox Wire’s announcement
