The most dependable way to deter household ants is to remove the food, water, and entry routes attracting them, then use a correctly labeled bait if they keep foraging indoors. Baits can reach a colony through workers, but they work only when ants accept and carry them back. Vinegar may briefly disrupt a trail; pantry remedies and essential oils are not established ways to eliminate a nest.
Start by finding the trail and identifying the ants
Follow the ants to see where they enter and what they are seeking—often food, water, or both. A photograph or specimen can help with identification. Species differ in nesting habits and food preferences, so the right treatment for one ant may be ineffective for another. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends consulting a local extension service or pest management professional when identification is uncertain or the problem persists (University of Minnesota Extension: Ants).
Do not assume every ant indoors is an ordinary nuisance ant. Carpenter ants can be associated with moisture-damaged wood, a structural issue that requires a different response from routine trail control.
Remove what attracts ants and block their route
Sanitation and exclusion are the first layer of control. They reduce access and make the home less attractive, though they do not by themselves eliminate an established nest.
#1 Best Overall
- ATTRACTS & KILLS: Liquid ant bait stations provide comprehensive ant control, targeting common household ants including acrobat, crazy, ghost, little black, odorous house, and pavement ants throughout your home with effective ant traps indoor
- KILLS THE QUEEN & THE ENTIRE COLONY: TERRO liquid ant bait contains borax-based formula that attracts worker ants to consume and carry back to the colony, effectively eliminating both visible ants and hidden nest populations for complete indoor ant killer control
- EFFECTIVE ELIMINATION: Fast-acting ant killer bait reduces ant activity within days as worker ants transport the liquid ant bait back to their colony, providing widespread elimination of entire ant populations with these sugar ant traps indoor
- EASY TO USE: Ready-to-use ant bait stations require no setup and can be placed along baseboards, corners, countertops, and other high-traffic areas where ants commonly travel for optimal ant trap indoor pest control results
- LONG-LASTING: Once placed, the bait continues to work for weeks, as long as ants continue to visit the stations. Complete control may take up to 2-4 weeks, depending on the infestation size
- Wipe up food and drink residue, including crumbs and sticky spills.
- Store human and pet food in sealed, insect-resistant containers; rinse recyclables before storing them.
- Remove accessible food and water sources, and repair leaks or other moisture problems.
- Once you have located an entry route, seal small cracks and gaps. Where practical, trim vegetation that touches the building or provides a bridge to it.
These steps follow guidance from University of Minnesota Extension and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Use bait when ants continue to forage indoors
Ant bait is designed to be carried from foraging workers to the nest. That makes it a colony-targeted option rather than just a way to kill ants visible on a countertop. It depends, however, on the ants accepting the bait and returning with it. Different species can prefer different foods, so there is no single bait formulation that should be assumed to work for every household ant.
Rank #2
- Kills the Colony: You will receive 16 sets of ant bait stations, which are sufficient and reusable to effectively control common house ants in your home, such as: Acrobat ant, Crazy ant, Sugar ant, Ghost ant, Argentine ant, Little black ants, Pavement, Odorous house, etc. Note: Liquid ant bait is not included
- Four Entrances Design: The four entrance design of the ant bait control can accelerate the end of ant invasion faster. Compared with single entrance models, worker ants can reach the liquid ant baits faster, thereby speeding up the distribution process of ant poison throughout the ant colony
- Sturdy Plastic Shell: Our termite bait stations are made of a clear plastic shell, which is compatible with any type of liquid ant bait. The hard plastic shell is stronger and more reliable than paper and cardboard alternatives and can be reusable
- Efficient and Neat: Whether indoors or outdoors, just set up the ant bait traps, add liquid ant bait (not included), and then watch how it attracts ants, and you can easily eliminate the entire ant colony
- Indoor and Outdoor Use: Set ant killer indoor around areas where ants are active, such as skirting boards, near walls, corners, kitchen counters, sinks and refrigerators. In addition, it provides long lasting ant killing power for homes, apartments, schools, hotels, hospitals, warehouses and other areas
Place and maintain bait carefully
- Choose a bait whose label covers the suspected ant and the intended location.
- Place it near active foragers, following the label’s placement and safety directions.
- Keep it available and replenish or replace it only as the label directs.
- Do not spray insecticide or household chemicals around bait. Contamination can make ants avoid it, and sprays can interfere with workers carrying bait to the nest.
Bait can take weeks or months to show results. Ants may ignore it if they prefer another food, if competing food remains available, or if the bait is insufficient or contaminated; multiple colonies can also complicate control. Utah State University Extension discusses species-specific differences in its guidance on odorous house ants. If activity continues despite careful bait use and sanitation, seek local extension or licensed professional advice.

Physical barriers: seal openings and remove bridges
Sealing cracks and gaps and trimming vegetation that connects to the structure are forms of physical exclusion. They help prevent entry and work best alongside removal of food and water sources. They do not kill ants already nesting inside or near the home.
Rank #3
- Kills ants where they hide for up to 3 months
- After ants feed on the bait, they return to the colony and transfer the bait to the queen and the others, thereby killing the entire colony
- Use indoors in corners, along walls and near entry points
- Child-resistant
Pesticide barriers: use only when the label fits
A pesticide perimeter treatment is different from sealing a route. A product may temporarily help when a nest cannot be located, but a chemical barrier is not automatically a lasting solution. Repellent residues can disrupt ant trails or conflict with baiting, so do not combine methods casually. Use only a product labeled for the ant and site, and follow its directions. The EPA’s consumer guidance and University of Minnesota Extension both emphasize prevention and careful product use.
What natural remedies can—and cannot—do
Vinegar can disrupt a trail temporarily
Wiping an ant trail with a mild vinegar-and-water solution may temporarily disrupt activity, according to University of Minnesota Extension. Treat it as trail cleanup, not nest control: it does not establish that the colony has been eliminated, and it does not replace sanitation, exclusion, or an accepted bait.

Essential oils and pantry remedies are not proven colony treatments
University of Minnesota Extension lists lavender and other essential oils, cinnamon, orange peels, red pepper, herbs, and similar remedies among methods that are not effective for getting rid of ants. “Natural” does not mean effective, and it is not a guarantee of safety around children or pets.

Keep bait stations and other pesticide products inaccessible to children, pets, and non-target animals. Follow all label directions for placement, permitted sites, covered pests, and handling; do not transfer pesticide to an unlabeled container or apply more than directed. EPA says bait stations can present low exposure risk when kept out of reach and used according to their labels, but the label—not a general claim about ant baits—determines where a specific product may be used (EPA: Smart Pest Control to Protect Your Health; EPA: Do’s and Don’ts of Pest Control).
