For kayaking, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro offers the deepest stated bare-camera rating of the models compared here: 20 m, versus 12 m for the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and 10 m for the GoPro HERO13 Black as reported by TechRadar. That rating is not a guarantee against leaks or impact damage. For prolonged underwater filming or higher water impact, match the camera with its model-specific case: DJI rates its Waterproof Case and Insta360 rates its Dive Case to 60 m. The right choice depends on how wet your outings get, whether you need underwater footage, and which recording modes suit your plan.
Which waterproof action camera suits your water use?
Start with the exposure you expect. Paddle splash and rain are different from an accidental dunk, sustained underwater filming, or forceful water impact. Depth ratings help compare stated limits, but they do not make a camera immune to damaged seals, impacts, or prolonged exposure. The figures below are product specifications; they are not results from controlled kayak-footage tests.

The bare-camera and housed depths are not interchangeable: a housing is a separate setup with its own fit and compatibility requirements. DJI recommends its Waterproof Case for long-duration underwater shooting or environments with high water-impact pressure. Insta360 lists a Dive Case for use to 60 m. Choose the appropriate manufacturer case when your use calls for one rather than treating a bare-camera rating as permission for any kind of submersion.

For splash, rain, and the possibility of a brief dunk
The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro has the highest bare-camera depth rating in this comparison. Insta360 rates the Ace Pro 2 to 12 m bare. Both give a stated depth limit, not an assurance that a particular camera will survive every dunk: inspect the camera and follow its care instructions before and after water exposure. TechRadar reports 10 m for the HERO13 Black, but that is a secondary-source figure here, so verify it with GoPro if it affects your decision.

For deliberate underwater filming or higher water impact
DJI’s guidance is to install the Waterproof Case for long-duration underwater shooting or high water-impact environments. Insta360’s product page rates the Ace Pro 2 with its Dive Case to 60 m. These are manufacturer-stated limits for the named setups; use the case made for the exact camera and check that the housing and any mounting accessories work together.
For stable footage on a moving kayak
DJI lists RockSteady 3.0 electronic stabilization and HorizonSteady horizon leveling. DJI specifies HorizonSteady for 1080p and 2.7K 16:9 at listed frame rates, not every resolution or recording mode. Insta360 describes FlowState stabilization and 360-degree Horizon Lock. These feature descriptions do not establish which camera produces better kayak footage: the available specifications are not a controlled comparison on the water.

Resolution, frame rate, and storage
Both cameras offer high-frame-rate 4K recording: DJI lists 4K modes up to 120 fps, and Insta360 lists 4K/120 fps. Insta360 also advertises 8K/30 fps and 4K Active HDR up to 60 fps. These specifications describe available recording modes, not a guarantee that every mode includes every stabilization feature.
DJI identifies a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor and 47 GB of built-in storage for the Osmo Action 5 Pro. For removable-card options and supported models, check DJI’s Osmo Action 5 Pro support page. Confirm the exact microSD card requirements for the camera you choose before a trip; card compatibility and usable capacity matter when recording long sessions.

Battery claims are not trip-runtime promises
The manufacturers’ battery figures use different stated conditions, so they should not be treated as a head-to-head endurance test or as the runtime to expect on a kayak.

Higher resolutions and frame rates, screen use, wireless settings, stabilization, temperature, and recording mode can change battery life. Plan around your outing and the camera’s actual settings rather than assuming either advertised figure will cover a full day.

Water-use checks and mounting
Prepare and care for the camera
For the Osmo Action 5 Pro, DJI instructs users to check that the glass lens cover and screens are intact, close the battery and USB-C covers, and tighten the lens cover before water use. After underwater use, rinse the camera with clean water and let it air-dry fully before using it again. Secure the setup before launching
Use a secure mount and consider a float or tether as a separate safeguard against losing the camera. Verify compatibility among the camera, housing, mount, float, and tether before relying on the combination; accessories that fit one model or case may not fit another. How to choose
- Match the camera to exposure. For splash and rain, compare bare-camera ratings and inspect covers and seals. For long submersion or higher water impact, choose the exact manufacturer housing intended for the model.
- Choose the recording modes you will use. Compare resolution and frame rate against stabilization or horizon-leveling support; those features may not be available in every mode.
- Plan storage and power. Check card compatibility where needed, and treat laboratory or manufacturer battery figures as conditional results rather than expected trip runtime.
- Confirm the complete mounting setup. Check camera-to-housing and accessory compatibility, then secure the setup before entering the water.
