The best water butt for a small garden is one that fits the space with its stand and diverter installed, matches your downpipe, and leaves room to use the tap. Compact 100L models offer a practical starting point, but “slimline” alone does not guarantee that a butt will fit your site.
What to measure before you buy
Measure the intended spot before comparing products. Check the full area the butt and its connections will occupy, not just the space between the wall and fence.
- Width and depth: Measure at the narrowest points, including any pipes, ledges or obstructions. Leave access to the tap and room for the diverter connection.
- Overall height: Include the stand if the kit supplies one. A raised stand can make it easier to fill a watering can, but adds height.
- Tap clearance: Make sure a watering can or hose can fit beneath the tap and that you can reach it comfortably.
- Downpipe dimensions and shape: Check whether the pipe is round or square and measure its width or diameter. The cited kits specify compatibility with standard 68mm round or 65mm square plastic downpipes; the Crocus listing says its diverter is not suitable for cast-iron downpipes.
Allow for the actual connection and the way the diverter attaches. A butt that fits the bare gap may still be difficult to install or use if its tap or pipework is blocked.

Dimensions are not presented in the same order across listings. For a narrow passage, compare the width and depth that will face the available gap, then check height with any stand fitted. A cylindrical model’s diameter is its footprint in both directions; a square or rectangular model may fit a tight gap better in one dimension while needing more room in another.
Choose between a standalone butt and a complete kit
A product called a water butt may be only the container. Before ordering, check whether the listing includes each component needed for your setup:

Crocus also publishes separate heights with and without its stand, so use the height that matches the configuration you plan to install.

How much capacity makes sense in a small garden?
The listed examples show that 100L is available in compact formats, including narrow rectangular and round designs. That does not establish a universally right capacity for every small garden. Consider how much room you can give up, what you plan to water, and whether the downpipe and layout make installation practical. A larger capacity is useful only if the container fits and can be connected accessibly.

Check the listing before purchase
- Confirm current dimensions, including the stand and any fittings that affect the footprint.
- Verify the downpipe compatibility and exclusions; do not assume a plastic-pipe diverter will fit cast iron.
- Confirm what is included rather than relying on a product photo or the word “set.”
