For a balanced Watch Dogs 2 setup, use your monitor’s native resolution, set Pixel Density to 1.0, avoid MSAA, enable post-process antialiasing with temporal filtering, and reduce Screen Space Reflections from Ultra to Very High if rainy night scenes stutter. These changes target the settings most likely to affect this game’s render workload without making the entire image unnecessarily soft.
Your result will depend on your CPU, GPU, video memory, resolution, drivers and the scene being rendered. The figures below come from historical NVIDIA testing and Steam guidance, so use them as tuning directions rather than promises of a fixed frame rate on modern hardware.
Use this balanced starting preset
Apply the following choices before making finer adjustments:
| Setting | Starting value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Display resolution | Monitor’s native resolution | Preserves the sharpest desktop-to-game presentation; use Pixel Density for render-scale changes first. |
| Pixel Density | 1.0 | Matches internal rendering to the selected resolution without adding unnecessary supersampling. |
| Antialiasing | Post-process antialiasing | Lower-cost edge smoothing than MSAA in this game. |
| Temporal filtering | Enabled | Works with post-process antialiasing to reduce shimmering at a lower cost than high MSAA levels. |
| MSAA | Disabled | NVIDIA measured a substantial historical frame-rate cost even at 2x. |
| Screen Space Reflections | Very High if Ultra causes dips; otherwise test your preference | Ultra is particularly demanding in rainy night scenes according to Steam’s January 2017 tips. |
| Texture detail | Highest level that fits your available VRAM | Avoids texture streaming problems while retaining surface detail. |
| Anisotropic filtering | High or maximum | Keeps roads, floors and other oblique surfaces sharper; NVIDIA’s historical test found about a 2 FPS cost. |
Run the game for several minutes in a repeatable area after applying this preset. If the frame rate is still too low, follow the ordered changes below rather than lowering every option at once.

How to get more FPS in Watch Dogs 2
1. Lower Pixel Density before lowering display resolution
Pixel Density is the game’s internal render-scale control. NVIDIA explains that a value below 1 renders fewer pixels than the selected display resolution, while a value above 1 renders more. The HUD and menus remain at the chosen screen resolution, so lowering Pixel Density can improve rendering performance without shrinking interface elements.
- Open the game’s graphics or display settings.
- Leave the display resolution at your monitor’s native value.
- Set Pixel Density to 1.0 and test.
- If frame rate remains low, reduce Pixel Density in small steps below 1.0.
- Stop when the image becomes unacceptably soft, then try another targeted setting instead.
A value below 1 is a performance compromise, not a free upgrade: distant detail and fine geometry will look less crisp. Conversely, values above 1 can reduce aliasing and sharpen detail but increase the number of pixels the GPU must shade.
2. Disable MSAA and use the lower-cost alternative
MSAA smooths polygon edges by sampling geometry multiple times. In NVIDIA’s historical Watch Dogs 2 testing, 2x MSAA cost more than 10 FPS and 4x cost nearly 20 FPS. Those measurements were made on the hardware and scenarios described in that guide; they are not a current result for every graphics card.
- Find the antialiasing option in the graphics menu.
- Turn off MSAA, especially 2x or 4x, if your frame rate is limited.
- Enable the game’s post-process antialiasing.
- Enable temporal filtering.
- Inspect moving foliage, fences and building edges for shimmer or ghosting, then decide whether the visual tradeoff is acceptable.
This combination can look less pristine on a still screenshot than high MSAA, but it generally avoids MSAA’s large rendering cost in this title.
3. Reduce Screen Space Reflections for rainy night dips
Steam’s January 9, 2017 community-curated PC optimization tips identify Ultra Screen Space Reflections (SSR) as demanding, especially when the game is running at night in the rain. If your average frame rate is acceptable during the day but collapses in wet nighttime streets, SSR is a sensible targeted change.
- Open the advanced graphics options.
- Change Screen Space Reflections from Ultra to Very High.
- Replay the same rainy night route and compare frame-time consistency.
- If the dips persist, test High before lowering unrelated settings.
SSR affects reflections calculated from information currently visible to the camera. Reducing it can change the appearance of wet roads, windows and puddles, but it preserves more of the scene than reducing the entire render resolution.

4. Check memory pressure and texture settings
Steam’s historical tips state that the Ultra texture pack needs more than 6 GB of VRAM, and that both cards in a dual-GPU configuration need at least 6 GB. Treat that as period-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every current card or driver. Use the in-game VRAM meter and watch for texture pop-in, hitching or warnings.
Recommended Free Tools
- If the meter approaches or exceeds available VRAM, lower texture resolution or remove the Ultra texture pack.
- Do not lower textures first when plenty of VRAM is free; texture quality often has less effect on average GPU throughput than render scale or MSAA.
- On systems with 8 GB of system RAM, close browsers, launchers and other unneeded applications before playing. Steam’s tip specifically calls out free memory on 8 GB systems.
5. Change one variable at a time
Make one adjustment, play the same route or scene, and record average smoothness and the worst dips. Changing five options together makes it impossible to tell which tradeoff helped. Repeat the comparison in both a normal daytime area and the rainy night conditions that stress reflections.
What each important setting actually changes
| Setting or choice | Visual effect | Performance implication | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel Density / render resolution | Higher values sharpen detail and can reduce aliasing; lower values soften the rendered image. | Directly changes internal render resolution and therefore the number of pixels processed. | Start at 1.0. Lower it for FPS before lowering display resolution; raise it only with clear GPU headroom. |
| MSAA | Smooths polygon edges with geometry samples. | NVIDIA measured more than 10 FPS lost at 2x and nearly 20 FPS at 4x in its historical test. | Avoid on performance-limited systems. Prefer post-process antialiasing plus temporal filtering. |
| Screen Space Reflections | Adds reflections, most visible on wet roads, puddles, glass and other glossy surfaces. | Ultra can be a scene-specific bottleneck during rainy nights. | Use Very High when those scenes produce low frame rates. |
| Texture resolution / Ultra texture pack | Controls surface detail and clarity at close and medium distances. | Consumes video memory; the historical Steam tip says the Ultra pack needs more than 6 GB VRAM. | Match the setting to the VRAM meter and available memory. |
| Anisotropic filtering | Keeps textures viewed at an angle—roads, rooftops and floors—sharper farther into the distance. | NVIDIA’s historical test reported about a 2 FPS cost. | Use a high or maximum value when clarity matters; verify the effect on your system. |
| Ambient occlusion | Adds contact shadowing and depth where surfaces meet. | Different algorithms have different costs and shading quality. | Compare HMSSAO, SSBC and HBAO+ visually; HBAO+ is a PC option discussed in NVIDIA’s collaboration with Ubisoft. |
Choosing between sharper visuals and higher frame rates
When smoothness is the priority
- Keep the monitor at native resolution but lower Pixel Density below 1.0.
- Disable MSAA and use post-process antialiasing with temporal filtering.
- Set SSR to Very High or High if rainy night scenes are the problem.
- Lower textures only when the VRAM meter or hitching indicates memory pressure.
- Keep anisotropic filtering high unless testing shows that your particular system needs the small saving.
When image clarity is the priority
- Keep Pixel Density at 1.0 and increase it only when the GPU has measurable headroom.
- Retain the monitor’s native display resolution.
- Use high anisotropic filtering for sharper angled surfaces.
- Choose the ambient-occlusion mode that gives the depth you want without causing frame-time spikes.
- Keep SSR at Ultra if wet-surface reflections matter more to you and performance remains stable in the scenes you play.
NVIDIA also describes driver-level Dynamic Super Resolution as an optional supersampling route for compatible NVIDIA hardware. It renders the game at a higher resolution and downsamples it to the display, so it can improve clarity at a substantial performance cost. It is vendor-specific and should be treated as an alternative experiment, not a universal requirement.
Official PC requirements and what they do—and do not—tell you
Steam’s Watch_Dogs 2 listing gives original storefront targets rather than modern benchmark guarantees. The stated minimum target is 720p at 30+ FPS on Low settings. The recommended target is 1080p at 30+ FPS on High settings. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are listed as supported on the current storefront page.
| Storefront target | CPU class | Memory | GPU class | Listed resolution and settings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel Core i5-2400S or AMD FX-6120 class | 6 GB RAM | GeForce GTX 660 2 GB or Radeon HD 7870 2 GB | 720p, 30+ FPS, Low |
| Recommended | Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-8120 class | 8 GB RAM | GeForce GTX 780 or Radeon R9 290 with 3 GB | 1080p, 30+ FPS, High |
NVIDIA’s historical guide also lists GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 1060 as additional recommended examples. Its measurements cover older GeForce 900- and 10-series cards, including a GTX 1080, in described test scenarios. Neither that guide nor Steam’s listing establishes what a modern CPU or GPU will deliver in every district, weather condition or resolution.
Diagnosing Watch Dogs 2 low FPS by symptom
Low FPS everywhere
Start with Pixel Density and MSAA. A render-scale reduction lowers the GPU’s pixel workload, while disabling MSAA removes one of the most expensive anti-aliasing paths documented for this game. If that is not enough, reduce other GPU-heavy quality options one at a time and check whether the GPU is fully utilized.

Only rainy nights are slow
Change SSR from Ultra to Very High first. This symptom matches the scene-specific warning in Steam’s dated optimization tips. Compare the same wet nighttime route before and after the change.
Stutters when turning or entering a new area
Check VRAM and system RAM usage. If the texture setting exceeds available video memory, lower it. On an 8 GB system, close background applications and repeat the test. Texture streaming and memory pressure can create hitching even when an average FPS counter looks acceptable.
The game looks blurry after optimizing
Raise Pixel Density toward 1.0, confirm that the display resolution is native, and inspect temporal filtering. If you lowered Pixel Density substantially, that softness is the expected cost of rendering fewer internal pixels. Restore the last value that looks acceptable before adjusting another option.
Edges shimmer or ghost
Compare post-process antialiasing with temporal filtering enabled against your previous combination. Vegetation, wires and fences are difficult for any anti-aliasing method. High MSAA may reduce some edge artifacts, but the historical performance cost makes it a poor first choice on a constrained system.
A repeatable tuning method
- Write down your current resolution, Pixel Density, antialiasing, SSR, texture and ambient-occlusion settings.
- Select a repeatable route containing traffic, foliage and buildings. Include a rainy night test if weather is available.
- Use the same resolution and camera path for each comparison.
- Change only one setting.
- Play long enough to see traversal and weather-related behavior, not just a static view.
- Judge both average smoothness and the severity of dips or hitching.
- Keep the change only if the performance improvement is worth its visible loss.
- After finding a stable baseline, raise one clarity setting at a time until you reach the preferred balance.
This method produces a useful result for your own hardware without pretending that an old benchmark can predict a fixed FPS number. Do not use a single quiet street to judge settings that become expensive in rain, at night or in crowded areas.
Quick presets by priority
| Priority | Recommended starting choices | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum stability | Native display resolution, Pixel Density below 1.0 if needed, post-process antialiasing, temporal filtering, MSAA off, SSR Very High or High, textures matched to VRAM and high anisotropic filtering. | Check whether the softer internal render is acceptable before lowering more quality settings. |
| Balanced play | Native resolution, Pixel Density 1.0, post-process antialiasing with temporal filtering, MSAA off, SSR Very High only when rainy nights dip, and the highest texture level that fits the VRAM meter. | Compare daytime and rainy nighttime routes, since one preset may not behave the same in both. |
| Image quality first | Native resolution, Pixel Density 1.0 or higher with headroom, high anisotropic filtering, preferred ambient occlusion, and Ultra SSR if wet reflections remain smooth. | Watch frame-time spikes rather than relying only on an average FPS counter. |
These are starting combinations, not locked presets. A setting that is inexpensive on one system can become the limiting factor on another, and scene complexity changes throughout the game.

How to verify a change without fooling yourself
Use a short checklist whenever you compare options. First, note the resolution and every setting that could affect rendering. Next, load the same save or travel the same route so traffic, buildings and foliage are broadly comparable. If you are testing SSR, include a wet nighttime sequence; if you are testing textures, move through an area with varied surfaces and watch for streaming behavior. Let the scene run long enough to expose traversal hitching instead of judging a single camera angle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Record two observations: how smooth camera movement feels and how severe the worst dips are. A setting can leave an average counter looking similar while making brief pauses less frequent. Keep the change only when its visual cost is acceptable. Then return to the baseline and test the next option. This makes it clear whether Pixel Density, MSAA, SSR, memory pressure or another setting is actually responsible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When not to chase a higher setting
If Pixel Density is already 1.0 and the image is sharp enough, increasing it is a supersampling choice, not a required upgrade. The extra pixels increase rendering load. Likewise, Ultra SSR is worthwhile only if reflections matter to you and rainy night performance remains stable. High anisotropic filtering is a relatively small historical cost in NVIDIA’s test—about 2 FPS—but any observed benefit should still be checked on your own hardware.
Do not remove the Ultra texture pack solely because of a general rule. Steam’s January 2017 guidance says it needs more than 6 GB of VRAM, but current cards, drivers and memory use vary. Use the in-game meter and symptoms such as texture pop-in or hitching. If the meter is comfortable and the game is stable, retaining higher texture detail may be preferable to sacrificing it for a bottleneck that is elsewhere.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Promising 60 FPS from a preset: the available figures establish neither a universal 60 FPS target nor a current hardware benchmark.
- Dropping display resolution first: try Pixel Density first so the HUD and menus retain their selected screen resolution.
- Leaving MSAA enabled by habit: 2x and 4x carried large historical costs in NVIDIA’s test.
- Lowering every quality option at once: you lose the ability to identify the actual bottleneck.
- Treating the 6 GB texture note as a modern law: it is dated Steam guidance; check your own VRAM meter.
- Judging only daytime performance: rainy night reflections can create a different bottleneck.
- Assuming a benchmark applies to every PC: NVIDIA’s measurements used older hardware and specified scenarios, while Steam’s recommendations are storefront targets from the game’s original PC-release context.
