If you mean a multiplayer strategy game played on a map, Classic Warlord is the clearest match: players expand into empty regions, attack rivals and try to outlast their armies. But “Warlord” is not one single tabletop game. Check the full title and format before choosing, because the name also refers to a medieval board game, a fantasy card game and a miniatures game.
Which Warlord game should you choose?
These games share a name, not a format or setting. Use the subtitle and components to identify the one you want rather than relying on a search for “Warlord board games.”
| Game | Format and theme | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Warlord | Map-based territory-conquest board game | Its rules describe multiplayer expansion and attacks across a map. The 2012 limited-edition version is described as having counters for up to seven players. Official rules; BoardGameGeek edition description. |
| The Warlord Game (1977) | Medieval fief-conquest board game | Players seek to become king or emperor by holding fiefs, managing tax flow and conquering neighboring fiefs. Game description. |
| Warlord: Saga of the Storm | Fantasy card game | A card game with its own setting and rules; it is not the Classic Warlord map game. Game description. |
| Warlord by Reaper | Fantasy miniatures game | Uses miniatures rather than the boxed map-board format associated with Classic Warlord. Game description. |
| Warlord Games | Publisher of miniatures and tabletop-wargame products | The company name alone does not identify a board game titled Warlord; its official store includes miniatures and rulebooks such as Bolt Action. Official store. |
Why Classic Warlord is the best fit for map-based conquest
The official rules describe a map divided into eight boards. Players colonize empty regions, attack other players and aim to survive after destroying their opponents’ armies. That makes it the strongest match among these namesakes for someone looking for multiplayer territorial strategy rather than a card or miniatures game. Read the Classic Warlord rules.

The rules suggest newcomers practice on the southwest corner section. They also say games using one or two boards should finish “well within 2 hours”; treat that as the rules’ guidance, not a guaranteed session length. A full-map game may differ, and the cited guidance does not establish a duration for it. Official rules.

Know which edition you are looking at
The Classic Warlord site describes the full-board game as an expanded version of Mike Hayes’s earlier title and recounts a red-box edition from 1974 and a blue-box edition from 1978. BoardGameGeek describes a 2012 limited-edition release with two sets of rules, an FAQ booklet, counters for up to seven players, a large six-sided die and the full eight-section mapboard. These are edition descriptions, not evidence that any version is currently in stock. Classic Warlord site; BoardGameGeek entry.
What to check before buying
- Full game title: Look for “Classic Warlord” if you want the map-and-territory game. A listing that says only “Warlord” may refer to a different product.
- Format: Confirm whether the listing is for a map board, cards or miniatures; those formats are not interchangeable.
- Edition and contents: Compare the box and component list with the edition you intend to buy. The 2012 description includes a full map and counters for up to seven players, but does not establish the contents of every other edition. BoardGameGeek entry.
- Player count and session time: The cited sources establish counters for up to seven players in the described 2012 edition and rules guidance for games on one or two boards; they do not provide a consistent player-count and duration comparison across all the similarly named games.
- Availability: Current retail and Amazon stock were not verified. Check the seller’s listing and edition details before ordering, especially for older or limited-edition copies.
Bottom line: choose by subtitle and format
For a multiplayer map game about expansion and conquest, look for Classic Warlord. If you want medieval fief management, a fantasy card game or a miniatures battle game, the other Warlord names point to different products. Confirm the exact title, format and edition before buying.
