For built-in ad filtering, consider Proton VPN or NordVPN—but the right fit depends on your device and subscription. A VPN connection alone does not block ads: the provider must include a separate filtering feature, and each service has different requirements and controls. The official documentation reviewed here describes feature behavior, but does not provide a consistent independent test that establishes which blocks the most ads.
What to check before choosing
- Filtering scope: Providers describe their features as blocking different combinations of ads, trackers, malware, or malicious domains. Domain-level filtering is not a guarantee that every ad will disappear.
- Device support: Availability can vary across desktop and mobile apps, and a browser extension may work differently from the VPN app.
- Plan and connection requirements: Some features require a particular subscription tier or an active VPN connection.
- Site compatibility: Look for a way to disable filtering or allow a trusted domain if a page or resource stops working.
How the VPN ad blockers differ
| Service and feature | Documented filtering | Requirements and availability | If something is blocked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN NetShield | Checks requested domains against lists associated with malware, ads, and trackers. Options include malware-only filtering or malware plus ad and tracker filtering. Windows also has an adult-content option; settings vary by platform. | Ad and tracker filtering requires Proton VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited, according to Proton’s blog. NetShield does not work with Tor over VPN because Tor nodes handle DNS queries. | Turn NetShield off if it blocks a resource in error. |
| NordVPN Ad blocker | NordVPN describes blocking ads, third-party trackers, and malicious ads. | The documented activation instructions require an active NordVPN Plus or Ultimate subscription and the Windows application. The documentation reviewed does not establish equivalent controls on every platform. | Inspect protection history or allow ads from a specific domain if a trusted site does not work as expected. |
Proton VPN: NetShield filtering with platform-specific controls
NetShield works by checking domains requested by websites and apps against domain lists, then blocking matching resources. That approach can reduce requests to listed ad, tracker, or malware domains, but it should not be read as a promise to remove every ad embedded in a page.
Proton says NetShield has included subdomains as well as root domains since early 2026. In a February 2026 update, the company said it was “six times more powerful” at blocking ad, malware, and tracker domains. That is Proton’s own description of its update, not an independent test or comparison with the other services here. Review the controls in your particular app because available settings differ by platform.

NetShield is not compatible with Tor over VPN: Proton explains that Tor nodes handle the DNS queries rather than Proton’s DNS service. NordVPN: documented setup is for Windows
NordVPN’s current support article describes its ad blocker as blocking ads, trackers, and malicious ads. The setup it documents requires the Windows application and an active Plus or Ultimate subscription. Do not assume those Windows instructions establish the same availability or controls in mobile apps, browser extensions, or other operating systems.
If a trusted site misbehaves, NordVPN documents checking protection history and allowing ads from a particular domain. See NordVPN’s ad-blocker setup and feature details and its instructions for managing blocked domains.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Proton VPN if its DNS-based filtering options suit your needs and your plan includes ad and tracker filtering. Avoid relying on NetShield with Tor over VPN.
- Choose NordVPN if you use Windows and are considering Plus or Ultimate, the subscription tiers specified in the documented setup. Confirm current support for your other devices before relying on the feature there.
None of the documentation establishes a comparable independent blocking rate across these providers. Choose based on your platform, plan, and the controls you want—not an unverified claim that one removes more ads.

When a site stops working
- Check whether the problem disappears when the blocker is disabled. Proton documents turning NetShield off; NordVPN documents allowing a specific domain.
- Re-enable filtering after testing, and allow only domains you trust. A site may rely on a blocked request for a page feature, so disabling filtering broadly can restore the feature but also permit the blocked content to load.
