There is no verified, locally tested “best VPN” for São Tomé and Príncipe in the available evidence. Proton VPN and NordVPN are reasonable services to compare, but neither a global server count nor a product feature list proves that a provider accepts customers in the country or offers a fast nearby route. Check current availability, route details, device support and checkout terms before subscribing.
Which VPN should you choose in São Tomé and Príncipe?
Treat Proton VPN and NordVPN as candidates to investigate, not as confirmed local winners. No São Tomé and Príncipe-specific provider availability, speed or latency test was established. Your best option depends first on whether the provider accepts local customers and which routes its app makes available to you.
Proton VPN
Proton’s features and download page describes encrypted connections, a kill switch intended to block internet access if the VPN disconnects, Always-on VPN, open-source apps and audits. It lists OpenVPN, IKEv2 and WireGuard on supported apps, with some features dependent on plan. The same page says Proton is headquartered in Switzerland and has a no-logs policy; those are provider statements, not independent findings established here.
TechRadar reported over 15,000 servers across 145 countries in its 2026 comparison. That is a dated report of Proton’s global footprint, not evidence of a São Tomé and Príncipe server or a fast connection from either island. Proton also says its paid VPN Accelerator can improve speeds over long distances by more than 400%; this is a vendor claim, not a local test result.

NordVPN
NordVPN’s server-location page offers a searchable list and explains distinctions including physical and virtual locations, as well as specialized server types. A search of the page for both “Sao Tome” and “São Tomé” returned no match when reviewed, but the list is dynamic; that search alone does not establish whether a route or local enrollment is available. Check the current app or ask support directly.
A country count does not tell you how close a server is to your island, whether it is physically located where listed, or how well it performs on your connection. NordVPN’s location definitions are useful for asking those questions, not for predicting latency.

What to verify before you subscribe
- Confirm country eligibility. Check whether the provider currently accepts account registrations and payments from São Tomé and Príncipe. Neither the reviewed provider material nor the country sources establish local enrollment or payment availability.
- Check the routes in the app. Look for the nearest available exit locations and ask whether each is physical or virtual. A virtual location can provide an IP associated with a country without hardware being physically there.
- Compare performance on your own connection. Try the same device and local internet connection, at similar times, against the nearest available locations. Compare connection stability and latency as well as download speed; results can differ by route, time and protocol.
- Match safeguards and apps to your devices. Proton lists apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone and iPad, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Chromebook, Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV. Confirm current platform support and feature availability for your plan before purchase.
- Check full checkout terms. Review the term length, renewal price, currency, taxes, refund conditions and available payment methods at checkout. No current local price or offer was verified for this comparison.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do
A VPN sends traffic through a provider’s server, encrypting the connection between your device and that server and making websites see the VPN server’s IP address, as Proton explains on its features page. It can help protect traffic on public or shared networks and provide a secure route to a workplace or home network. It does not create internet access where none exists, guarantee anonymity from every party, or ensure that a particular website or streaming service will work.
INIC, São Tomé and Príncipe’s government IT service, describes a VPN as a secure way to access local network resources remotely: “Uma VPN permite acesso remoto a recursos de uma rede local através da Internet mas de forma segura.” Its service is described for government institutions not yet physically connected to the government network and authorized staff who need remote access. That is a local government use case, not a consumer VPN endorsement. INIC’s VPN page provides the explanation.

What is established about VPN rules and internet access?
AGER identifies itself as the country’s multisector regulator, with telecommunications among its responsibilities. Its notice about provisional authorization for CST to offer IPTV through CST ON under Resolution No. 003/CA/AGER/2026 concerns IPTV; it does not decide whether consumer VPN use is legal. See AGER’s official site.
The U.S. Department of State’s 2023 country report said the government did not restrict or disrupt internet access or censor online content during that reporting period. This is historical evidence about that period, not a guarantee about current conditions or every online service. The reviewed sources do not establish a country-specific consumer VPN ban, a comprehensive legal opinion, or current local network conditions. Read the 2023 country report for its scope.

Will a VPN unlock streaming services?
A VPN can change the IP address a streaming site sees, but that does not guarantee access to a particular catalogue. PrivadoVPN warns that connecting to a streaming service through another location might breach that service’s terms. Check the rules of the service you use and do not assume that a VPN makes a viewing method permitted. PrivadoVPN’s streaming guidance discusses this issue.
