Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S do not support native VPN apps, so you need a compatible router or a computer to route console traffic through a VPN. Which VPN is best depends on your goal: Security.org’s Xbox Series X tests favor ExpressVPN overall, while Gizmodo’s separate Vienna tests found different leaders for distant-server ping and cloud gaming. Their results are not directly interchangeable, so treat them as evidence for specific setups—not a universal ranking.
Which VPN is best for Xbox?
ExpressVPN is the strongest overall pick in Security.org’s 2026 Xbox Series X comparison: its testers reported 25–40 ms average ping on the closest server in Apex Legends, the lowest latency among the VPNs they tested. Gizmodo’s independent comparison points to other choices for narrower needs: NordVPN had the lowest ping to Japan, Surfshark had the lowest measured cloud-gaming latency, and ExpressVPN had the best nearby download speed and router convenience in that test.
Those findings come from different locations, methods, and workloads. Security.org tested on an Xbox Series X through a Windows virtual router, while Gizmodo reported Vienna VPN ping against a 10 ms baseline and measured cloud gaming separately. Performance on your connection may differ with location, server, protocol, home network, and the game or stream you use.

Gizmodo’s figures are from its September 28, 2026 comparison; the Vienna ping results were 20–38 ms against its 10 ms baseline, and its separate cloud-gaming results ranged from 63–72 ms. Security.org’s Xbox test was last updated September 10, 2026. These publisher-reported results are not tests performed for this article.

Why does an Xbox need a router or computer for VPN?
Xbox One and Series X|S do not run the VPN apps described in these guides directly. To put the console’s traffic through a VPN, configure a compatible router or share a computer’s VPN connection. A router can keep the VPN path available without leaving a PC running and may cover other devices on that network as well. Computer sharing can be useful if you already have a suitable computer, but that computer must remain in the connection path.
- VPN router: Configure a compatible router with the VPN service, then connect the Xbox to that router’s network. Security.org names ExpressVPN Aircove as a dedicated hardware option; check current model details and compatibility before buying.
- Windows or Mac sharing: Share the computer’s VPN connection over Ethernet or, where supported, Wi-Fi. This requires configuration and the computer to remain on and connected.
- Smart DNS: Change how selected DNS requests are handled for supported services. It does not encrypt all of the console’s traffic or provide the same privacy and security protections as a VPN tunnel.
How to share a VPN connection with Xbox
Use a compatible VPN router
- Confirm that your router model supports configuration for your VPN service; compatibility depends on the router and service.
- Set up the VPN on the router using the service’s current instructions.
- Connect the Xbox to the router’s network, then run the console’s network test and check the game or service you intend to use.
Share from a Windows PC
- Connect the Xbox to the PC with an Ethernet cable.
- In Windows, enable connection sharing on the VPN adapter and select Ethernet as the home-network connection.
- Connect the PC to the VPN, then test the Xbox network connection.
Menu names and sharing behavior can vary by Windows version and VPN client; use the current instructions for your computer and service if the adapter or sharing controls differ.

Share from a Mac
- Open Internet Sharing settings on the Mac.
- Choose the VPN connection as the source and Ethernet as the destination.
- Enable Internet Sharing, connect the Xbox to the Mac by Ethernet, and test the console’s connection.
As with Windows sharing, the Mac must remain part of the network path while the Xbox uses the shared connection.

Usually, a VPN adds another network route and can increase latency; it does not inherently make a game connection faster. A VPN may change the route your traffic takes, but the test results here do not establish that it will reduce your ping. Gizmodo’s Vienna comparison measured 20–38 ms of VPN ping against a 10 ms baseline. The best result varied by workload: its NordVPN Japan route was 215 ms, while its Vienna cloud-gaming measurements were 63–72 ms. A cloud stream’s latency is not the same metric as ordinary game-server ping.

Security.org’s Xbox Series X testing used a Windows virtual router and Apex Legends, Fortnite, Forza Motorsport, and the Xbox network speed test. It reported ExpressVPN’s closest-server Apex Legends average at 25–40 ms and its closest-server speed-test results at 223 Mbps download and 201 Mbps upload. Those are results from that publisher’s setup, not guaranteed results for a different home connection.
- For competitive play, prioritize a nearby VPN server and compare in-game latency with and without it.
- For a distant lobby, expect additional distance to matter; a VPN cannot remove the physical route between you and the game server.
- For cloud gaming, judge the stream’s responsiveness in that service rather than assuming a low speed-test ping will produce the same result.
Smart DNS and Xbox DNS settings: what they do
Smart DNS is not a VPN tunnel. Private Internet Access’s official support guide, dated July 7, 2026, explains: “Smart DNS works differently from a VPN connection. It changes how some DNS requests are handled, but it does not encrypt your internet traffic or provide the same privacy and security protections as the PIA app.” It may be useful for supported region-based streaming, but it should not be chosen when the goal is encrypted console traffic.

PIA’s official instructions cover Xbox One and Xbox 360; they do not explicitly establish this procedure for Series X|S.

- On Xbox One, open Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > DNS settings.
- Select Manual, enter the generated address as the Primary DNS, and leave Secondary DNS blank.
- Restart the console and test the network connection.
Manual public DNS is not a VPN
Gizmodo lists Cloudflare DNS addresses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, and Google DNS addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, as examples for Xbox network settings. A public DNS resolver may affect lookup speed, but it does not change ping to a game server, encrypt traffic, or reliably bypass restrictions.

How to choose based on your setup
- You want the broadest tested gaming case: ExpressVPN is Security.org’s top pick in its Xbox Series X comparison. Its conclusion is specific to that publisher’s test setup and workloads.
- You care most about cloud gaming: Surfshark had the lowest cloud-gaming latency in Gizmodo’s Vienna test, at 63 ms. That result applies to its test conditions, not every location or cloud service.
- You want to connect to a distant region: NordVPN had the lowest ping to Japan in Gizmodo’s comparison at 215 ms. That remains much higher than its 38 ms Vienna result, illustrating the cost of a longer route.
- You want to avoid keeping a computer on: Use a compatible VPN router. Security.org identifies ExpressVPN Aircove as one hardware option, but verify present-day compatibility and availability before purchase.
- You only need supported DNS-based region handling: Smart DNS may fit, but it is not equivalent to an encrypted VPN connection.
Top10VPN says it tested 59 VPNs across three generations of Xbox consoles and evaluates speed, compatibility, geo-unblocking, privacy, security, and ease of use. That is the publisher’s own methodology claim; it does not make every VPN result interchangeable or prove service access in every region.
What a VPN cannot guarantee
- A lower ping or faster downloads: routing through a VPN can add latency, and performance depends on location, server, protocol, connection, and workload.
- Access to every geo-restricted game or streaming catalog: availability and service rules vary, and the cited comparisons do not establish guaranteed access.
- Protection from every denial-of-service attack: the evidence here does not establish that a VPN prevents every DDoS attack.
- Permission under every game or streaming service’s terms: check the applicable service rules before using a VPN for region-based access.
For any particular VPN subscription, check current provider terms, router compatibility, and supported features directly before committing; plan prices and terms can change.
