For Australian adults, the best VPN for private browsing is the one whose privacy disclosures and connection-drop protection fit your needs—not one that promises access to a particular porn site. eSafety says providers are expected to detect VPN use, and this comparison has no site-compatibility or performance testing. NordVPN, Proton VPN and ExpressVPN each publish privacy commitments, but those are provider statements, not a like-for-like independent test.
What Australia’s age-assurance rules mean for adults
Viewing pornography is legal for adults in Australia, but access to specified age-inappropriate material is meant to be restricted to adults. Under the Age-Restricted Material Codes, relevant services must take steps to prevent children under 18 from accessing or being exposed to covered material. Which obligations apply depends on the service category and the requirement. eSafety’s FAQ lists codes for search engines, internet carriage services and hosting services taking effect from 27 December 2025, and codes for designated internet services, electronic services, social media, app distribution platforms and equipment providers taking effect from 9 March 2026. Some requirements have staged dates, including 27 June and 9 September 2026; consult the current eSafety regulatory guidance for the applicable service and obligation.
Age assurance does not necessarily mean uploading a government-issued ID. eSafety lists possible approaches including ID matching, facial age estimation, credit-card checks, digital identity systems, parental confirmation and AI-based estimates. Its FAQ says methods must minimize personal-information collection and comply with Australian law and privacy principles; its guidance says providers should offer more than one method and should not use government ID as the sole method. The FAQ also says eSafety does not receive individual user data under these codes. These statements describe the regulatory framework, not the implementation of every site.

A VPN should be considered a privacy tool, not a way to guarantee access, avoid an age check or change a service’s rules.

How to compare a VPN for private browsing
Read what “no logs” does—and does not—cover
Check the privacy policy for specific categories: browsing activity, traffic content, IP addresses, session or connection metadata, account identifiers, billing information and troubleshooting data. A statement that a provider does not log browsing activity is not a promise that it collects no information at all. Consider whether the policy explains what is retained, why it is needed and how long it is kept.
Check the scope of any independent review
Look for who conducted a review, what systems or claims it covered and when. A provider’s report of an independent review is useful context, but it is still the provider describing that review unless you also examine the underlying report. Reviews can cover a particular configuration or point in time rather than every product, platform or future operation.

Check kill-switch behavior on your device
A kill switch is intended to block some or all internet traffic if the VPN connection drops, reducing the risk that traffic continues over an ordinary connection. Its behavior and availability vary by operating system and app; check whether it is enabled by default and whether it blocks all traffic or only selected connections. Do not assume the feature is active simply because the VPN offers one.

Which of these VPNs should you consider?
Consider NordVPN if you want platform-specific kill-switch documentation
Its cited pages address both account data and platform-dependent kill-switch behavior, and the company reports multiple no-logs review engagements. Read the data-retention page alongside the no-logs claim, and verify the kill-switch default for your operating system.
Consider Proton VPN if its stated data exclusions match your priorities
Its FAQ names several categories it says it does not log, and its feature page explains what its kill switch is designed to do after a server connection is lost. These remain provider statements; check the app settings on your device.

Consider ExpressVPN if you want to assess its policy’s full data picture
The privacy policy describes both activity and connection information the provider says it does not collect and other information it may collect. Read the policy as a whole rather than interpreting its no-activity-logs language as no collection of account or service data.
