There is no single best VPN for every U.S. user. For streaming and broad everyday use, NordVPN and Surfshark are strong candidates in TechRadar’s published tests; Proton VPN suits readers who prioritize a privacy-focused service, while Private Internet Access offers more configuration for advanced users. Those results come from independent reviewers, not hands-on testing by itechguides.com, and should be treated as snapshots rather than guarantees.

How to choose a VPN for use in the USA

Start with what you need the VPN to do. Someone connecting to U.S. services while traveling may care most about U.S. locations and streaming access. Someone seeking more privacy on everyday connections should examine the provider’s privacy policy and independent audit evidence. Advanced users may value protocol choices and configuration controls more than a simple interface.

Compare providers on the same practical questions:

  • U.S. coverage: Does the service offer a location near the city or region you need? A larger location count does not automatically mean a better connection.
  • Privacy and security: Read what the policy says is collected, and look for independent audits. A provider’s “no logs” claim alone is not the same as an independently verified finding.
  • Performance: Speed depends on your internet connection, location, server, protocol, and time. Treat published benchmarks as results from the reviewer’s setup, not a prediction for your home.
  • Streaming: Check the specific services you use, but do not assume access will remain uninterrupted. Streaming platforms and VPN providers change their systems.
  • Apps and value: Confirm device support, features on your operating system, current plan terms, renewal cost, and refund conditions directly with the provider. These details can change.

For more detail on how independent reviewers assess VPNs, see Security.org’s testing and evaluation methodology and TechRadar’s U.S. VPN guide.

Four VPNs to shortlist

The evidence available supports a use-case shortlist of four providers, rather than a defensible top-five ranking. The published results below are attributed to their reviewers; they are not tests conducted by itechguides.com.

VPN Best fit Published evidence Trade-off to consider
NordVPN Streaming and general use TechRadar reports successful sessions with Netflix U.S. and Peacock across ten tested U.S. locations. In its test environment, it recorded 1,249 Mbps using NordLynx and 688 Mbps using OpenVPN. These are TechRadar’s configuration-specific results, not expected speeds for every user. Streaming access can change.
Surfshark Streaming and connections from abroad TechRadar reports WireGuard speeds above 1,000 Mbps in its nearest-server and U.S.-from-abroad tests, and says sampled U.S. locations streamed Peacock without issues. The findings apply to TechRadar’s test setup and sampled locations; they do not establish permanent access or a universal speed.
Proton VPN Readers drawn to a privacy-focused service TechRadar describes it as privacy-focused, reports 22 U.S. locations in its guide, and records 1,475 Mbps on WireGuard. Its tests of ten U.S. locations against Peacock, Netflix, and Disney+ were generally smooth. Location count and performance are time- and reviewer-specific. Check the provider’s current policy and audit details for the privacy evidence relevant to you.
Private Internet Access Advanced users who want configuration options TechRadar reports no material unblocking problems in its tests with Netflix, Prime Video, Peacock, and Disney+, apart from a temporary issue on one sampled streaming-optimized location. TechRadar describes its interface as more demanding, which may be a poor fit if you want a simple setup.

TechRadar says its reviewers used hands-on testing, proprietary performance tests, and day-to-day use, including checks of protocols, encryption, kill switches, DNS leaks, and performance at different times. That is a description of TechRadar’s work, not a claim of testing by this site. See its full U.S. comparison for the provider-specific context.

How to interpret the speed results

Two independent publications can produce figures that should not be combined into one ranking: their connections, test locations, servers, protocols, and timing may differ. For example, Security.org’s January 2026 snapshot used ten Ookla tests per VPN and averaged results against its no-VPN baseline. It reported:

Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
  • 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
  • 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.

VPN Average download speed in Security.org’s tests Download-speed loss in Security.org’s tests
NordVPN 89.11 Mbps 5.78%
Surfshark 87.25 Mbps 7.78%
Proton VPN 86.07 Mbps 8.18%
Private Internet Access 90.48 Mbps 4.84%

These are Security.org’s January 2026 test results, not promised consumer speeds or a direct comparison with TechRadar’s much higher protocol-specific figures. Your result may differ substantially. Security.org explains its test approach and VPN evaluations; Comparitech also publishes a U.S.-specific comparison, with its benchmark sample last tested in September 2026, and cautions that its speed and latency measurements come from its benchmark hosts rather than a reader’s connection: Comparitech’s U.S. VPN guide.

Streaming access is a moving target

A successful test shows that a particular reviewer, server, and service worked at the time; it does not promise that the same combination will keep working. RTINGS’ guide, updated October 5, 2026, specifically cautions that streaming services change their VPN-detection methods and that official streaming support is not a guarantee of indefinite access. Its comparison also illustrates that a provider’s streaming suitability and its privacy trade-offs are separate questions. Read RTINGS’ VPN comparison with those limits in mind.

Why this guide does not rank five providers

The available comparative material supplies concrete testing for four providers, but it does not establish a fifth pick or a shared scoring method that would support ordering all five. Comparitech’s 2026 U.S. dataset describes ten tracked VPNs, ten evaluated, and ten ranked, based on testing last conducted in September 2026. That is Comparitech’s ranking and benchmark sample, not evidence for an itechguides.com ranking. A credible numbered ranking would also need declared weights for privacy, speed, streaming, coverage, usability, and price, plus verified editorial testing under a consistent method.

Accordingly, the four providers above are organized by reader need and independent-review evidence, not presented as a publisher-tested top five. No price winner is named: current full-plan costs, renewal terms, and included features are volatile and are not established here.

When a VPN router makes sense

A VPN router may be worth considering if an older device cannot install a VPN app, but that is a hardware alternative rather than a reason to buy a particular model. Before choosing one, verify its supported VPN protocol, compatibility with your provider, expected throughput, and setup requirements. RTINGS discusses this option in its VPN guide; the reviewed evidence does not establish a specific router recommendation.
