A VPN can lower ping in PUBG, but only in specific situations: when your normal route to the game server is inefficient and the VPN gives traffic a better path. It can just as easily add delay. No VPN can promise “no lag,” and no single provider is the best choice for every player. The most useful approach is to diagnose your connection first, then test a short list of providers against your own baseline. Four providers with PUBG-specific material are ExpressVPN, Windscribe, Surfshark, and NordVPN, though the evidence for each is different in strength.

Most PUBG lag has causes a VPN cannot touch

PUBG Support’s lag guidance lists several common sources of game lag: heavy system load, intermittent network drops, and high server load. Its troubleshooting list also covers bandwidth use by other devices or programs, interference from firewall or antivirus software, computer overheating, graphics settings, and outdated or faulty drivers. None of these is a routing problem, so a VPN will not fix them. If your frame rate drops while your ping stays steady, the cause is almost certainly on your machine, not on the network path.

Work through the local causes before paying for anything:

  • Check whether other devices on your home network are streaming, downloading, or uploading during play.
  • Watch for brief disconnections or spikes, which point to an unstable connection rather than a slow one.
  • Review graphics settings and confirm your GPU driver is current.
  • Check that the game and its network traffic are not being blocked or slowed by your firewall or security software.
  • Monitor machine temperature under load, since heat can throttle performance.

Why latency matters and what it measures

Latency is the delay between your action and the server’s response, and it is what most players mean by “lag.” The New Zealand Commerce Commission’s September 2023 report states that online games need low latency between a user’s machine and the host server, and that long message transit times can produce stuttering or lag. That is the core problem a VPN might affect, because it changes the path your packets take. Latency is not the same as bandwidth, though. A fast plan with a poor route can still play badly, and a slow plan with a short, clean route may feel fine.

When a VPN helps, and when it makes things worse

Windscribe’s PUBG guidance says a VPN can sometimes help when the default internet route is inefficient, for example when a provider’s network sends your traffic on a long detour to reach a game server. The same guidance warns that a distant VPN server, or additional hops between you and the game, can increase ping. Both outcomes are possible, and which one you get depends on your specific route. The table below shows the typical pattern to test for.

Situation Likely effect on ping What to do
Default route takes a long detour to the game region A nearby VPN endpoint may reduce ping Test a VPN location close to the game server
Default route is already short and clean VPN usually adds delay Keep the VPN off for competitive play
VPN server is far from you or the game server Ping rises Choose a closer location
Local problems (Wi-Fi, load, overheating, drivers) VPN has no meaningful effect Fix the local cause first

Provider What its PUBG-related material says Platform evidence Main limit
ExpressVPN Advises choosing a nearby server and using its in-app server speed test; promotes its Lightway protocol and an Internet Kill Switch; cites servers in 113 countries Windows, Android, and iOS apps listed on its PUBG page Provider statements. No independent PUBG ping data, and nothing supports “no lag.”
Windscribe Describes regional access, nearby-first setup, a ping and jitter check, split tunneling, and a Firewall setup Platform support for PUBG not stated in its guidance Routing and throttling claims are marketing unless independently tested. It also warns that PUBG may restrict access by location or block suspicious-looking connections.
Surfshark Recommended for PUBG Mobile in Top10VPN’s review, updated August 5, 2026 PUBG Mobile A reviewer’s assessment. It does not establish results across player locations, devices, or game versions.
NordVPN Included in TechRadar’s 2026 gaming VPN review, which tested 59 VPN services across games including PUBG and describes the reviewer’s own desktop PUBG experience PUBG on desktop Reviewer-specific and not reproducible. It is not a controlled comparison and gives no benchmark figure you can apply to your own connection.

ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN has the most PUBG-specific guidance of the four, and its advice is practical: pick a nearby server, then use the built-in speed test to compare options. Its country count, 113 according to the provider, describes network coverage, not game performance. A larger network does not mean lower ping for your route.

Windscribe

Windscribe’s guidance is the most explicit about failure modes. It recommends starting with a nearby server, checking ping and jitter before committing, and using split tunneling so that only game traffic goes through the VPN. Those are useful habits whichever provider you choose, but the routing and throttling claims on its page are provider statements. Test them yourself.

Surfshark

Top10VPN recommends Surfshark for PUBG Mobile, and its review discusses the mobile apps and gaming features. For a mobile player, this is the most relevant of the four reviews. It still reflects one reviewer’s assessment, so measure your own ping before relying on it.

NordVPN

TechRadar’s review reports the reviewer’s desktop PUBG experience with NordVPN. It is useful as a description of one setup, but it does not provide a reproducible result, so it cannot tell you how NordVPN will perform from your city on your provider’s network.

How to test whether a VPN helps your PUBG connection

A fair test compares a baseline against a VPN run on the same connection, at similar times of day, with the same game region selected. Follow these steps:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record your baseline ping and jitter with the VPN turned off. Take readings over several minutes during a normal session, not one snapshot.
  2. Connect to the VPN location nearest to you that also sits close to your PUBG server region. Windscribe and ExpressVPN both recommend starting with nearby servers.
  3. Run the provider’s ping and jitter check or in-app speed test, then play a session and note any spikes.
  4. Repeat the measurement at a different time of day. A route that is better at 9 p.m. may be worse at peak hours.
  5. Compare averages and spikes, not just the best result. Jitter that rises under the VPN is a warning sign even if the average looks similar.
  6. If the VPN raises ping, drop it for PUBG. A VPN that only helps occasionally is not a dependable fix.

When you do use a VPN for PUBG, check two features. First, look for a kill switch so your real connection does not leak if the tunnel drops mid-match. ExpressVPN describes its Internet Kill Switch, and Windscribe’s guide covers its Firewall. Second, use split tunneling if the app supports it, so that only game traffic is routed and other apps keep their direct connection. These features affect stability and privacy. They do not reduce latency.

Platform, region, and account considerations

PUBG on desktop, PUBG Mobile, and PUBG Mobile Lite are separate contexts. Before choosing a provider, confirm that its app runs on your actual device. ExpressVPN lists Windows, Android, and iOS apps, and the Surfshark evidence concerns PUBG Mobile, while the NordVPN evidence concerns desktop.

A VPN is not a guarantee of access. Windscribe itself warns that PUBG may restrict access by location or block connections that look suspicious. Check PUBG’s current official terms before relying on a VPN to reach a particular region, and do not assume a VPN protects your account from restrictions.

Provider features, server locations, and app support change, so confirm each detail on the provider’s current site before you subscribe.
