There isn’t one objectively best VPN for every Mac user. Proton VPN is a strong candidate if you want documented macOS safeguards and a provider that publishes privacy and audit information; Mullvad is worth considering if privacy-focused simplicity matters more than streaming reach or a large server network. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark also appear among leading Mac options in recent reviews, but rankings vary with each publisher’s tests and priorities. Compare the Mac app you’ll actually install, the provider’s privacy evidence, and the features you need—not just a ranking.

What is the best VPN for Mac?

Choose based on how you use your Mac and what the provider can substantiate. Recent guides do not agree on a single winner: Top10VPN’s Mac guide, which says it tested 59 VPNs and was last tested in September 2026, includes ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, and Windscribe among its picks. Tom’s Guide also names NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark among its leading choices. These are each publisher’s judgments, not a universal consensus.

Testing context matters. Tom’s Guide says its evaluation included a November 2023 MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip running macOS Tahoe; that setup cannot establish performance on every Mac or network. Macworld’s review of Mullvad highlights privacy-oriented features but also notes a smaller server network, five simultaneous connections, and inconsistent access to geo-restricted streaming. Read review findings as attributed assessments, not guarantees for your setup.

Which VPN is best for Mac privacy?

Start with the provider’s stated logging policy, then look for independent verification and establish what it covered. A “no logs” statement is a provider claim, not a promise of anonymity or proof that every possible risk is eliminated.

Proton says it does not log websites visited, traffic or communication content, IP addresses, session lengths, or location-based information. It also says its apps are open source and independently audited. Proton’s audit announcement says its no-logs infrastructure passed a fifth consecutive annual audit when the announcement was published in 2022; the page was updated June 16, 2026 with latest audit information. Those statements should be read with the provider’s published scope and the audit reports, rather than generalized to every system or future version. See Proton’s explanation of its no-logs policy and its audit announcement.

Also check practical safeguards in the Mac app: whether it has a kill switch, how it handles DNS, which protocols it supports, and what happens when a connection drops or the network changes. Proton’s macOS app documentation lists a kill switch, DNS leak protection, WireGuard, WireGuard TCP, Stealth, Smart Protocol, connection profiles, and custom DNS. These are documented features, not independent proof of a provider’s overall privacy.

Do Macs have a built-in VPN?

macOS supports VPN configurations, but that is different from subscribing to a consumer VPN service. Apple’s security guide documents IKEv2/IPsec configurations and SSL-VPN through an appropriate client app. A VPN provider’s Mac app connects you to that provider’s service; the operating system’s support does not itself supply a VPN account or server network. See Apple’s VPN security documentation.

Apple also describes per-app VPN as a managed-device capability: an organization can use device management to specify VPN use for managed apps and certain Safari domains. That does not mean a typical personal Mac automatically gets organization-managed per-app routing.

Is iCloud Private Relay the same as a VPN?

No. Tom’s Guide describes iCloud Private Relay as protecting Safari traffic rather than all Mac applications, and notes that it does not let you select a VPN country. A full-device VPN app is a different tool for routing traffic from supported apps through a VPN provider. Private Relay and a VPN should not be treated as interchangeable, and neither makes you anonymous or stops every form of tracking.

What is the difference between a Mac App Store VPN app and the website download?

The installation channel can affect which settings are available. Top10VPN’s September 2026 guide warns that Mac App Store and website versions of ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark may not expose identical settings. The difference is provider- and version-specific, so do not assume one channel is always more complete.

What Mac-specific limitations should you check?

Split tunnelling on macOS

Split tunnelling lets you choose which apps use the VPN, but its availability and behavior vary by provider. Proton describes its macOS implementation as experimental: it supports excluding apps, may behave unexpectedly with WebKit-based apps, and works with WireGuard and Stealth rather than IKEv2. Check Proton’s split-tunnelling documentation before relying on it for a particular app.

Streaming and server coverage

If you need access to region-restricted streaming, do not infer reliable access from a feature list or a general review ranking. Macworld reports inconsistent geo-restricted streaming access for Mullvad. Availability can change, and performance depends on the service, location, and network.

Device limits and scale

Compare simultaneous connections and server locations only if they affect your household or travel needs. Macworld reports five simultaneous connections for Mullvad in its 2026 guide. Such figures can change; check the provider’s current terms before subscribing. A larger network is not, by itself, evidence of stronger privacy.

How to choose a Mac VPN for your needs

  1. Decide what you need it to do. Public Wi-Fi protection, streaming, multi-hop, and app-level routing are different requirements. Avoid paying attention to a feature that does not serve your use.
  2. Verify the macOS app and installation channel. Check the supported macOS versions and whether the App Store or website build includes the settings you need.
  3. Read the privacy policy and audit details. Note what the provider says it logs, whether an independent audit exists, when it was conducted, and what systems or claims it covered.
  4. Check connection safeguards and protocols. Confirm kill switch and DNS protections, available protocols, and behavior after disconnects or network changes.
  5. Confirm limitations for advanced routing. If you need split tunnelling, check Mac-specific app and protocol restrictions rather than relying on a feature label.
  6. Check current commercial terms separately. Prices, renewal rates, refund rules, device limits, and streaming access change and may vary by region. Verify them at checkout and in current provider documentation.

A VPN protects traffic routed through its service, but it does not replace endpoint security, prevent all tracking, or make online activity anonymous. No speed, battery-life, or performance result should be assumed from the review evidence above.
