For most gamers who want a paid VPN, NordVPN is a strong all-round choice for nearby-server play, while ExpressVPN stands out for console and router setup. Surfshark is a lower-cost paid alternative. Windscribe and Proton VPN Free are options for casual play or testing, with different limits. No VPN can promise lower ping: a VPN may improve a particular route, but it can also add latency. Compare your ping and jitter with and without it before relying on one in a competitive game.
How to choose a gaming VPN
Prioritize a stable route to the game server over a provider’s headline download speed. Ping measures round-trip delay; jitter is variation in that delay. Both can affect how responsive a match feels. Choose an endpoint near you or the game server, and test it under the conditions in which you play.
- Nearby-server performance: Look for low, consistent ping and jitter, not just high Mbps figures.
- Server geography: A VPN endpoint far from you or the game server can worsen the route.
- Protocol: WireGuard or a provider’s equivalent modern protocol can be useful, but protocol alone does not guarantee a better gaming connection.
- Platform support: For consoles, check router-client compatibility and throughput; a router VPN is usually the general way to cover a console.
- Cost and limits: Check the renewal price, data cap, device allowance and refund terms for your location before subscribing. Prices and plan terms change.
Best VPNs for gaming by use case
The measurements below come from editorial tests and provider information, not a universal benchmark. Results vary with location, ISP, VPN endpoint and game server. Prices are the figures reported by TechRadar in its 2026 guide and may vary by region or change at checkout.
| VPN | Best for | Evidence and reported terms |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Low-ping premium play | Top10VPN measured 8 ms average ping to a nearby server. TechRadar reported NordLynx speeds above 1,000 Mbps on nearby servers, coverage in 149 countries, a starting price of $3.49/month and a 30-day guarantee. |
| ExpressVPN | Console setup and premium all-round use | Top10VPN ranked it first among 59 tested gaming VPNs, rated it 9.5/10, measured 8 ms average local ping, and reported 113 server countries, Smart DNS, router support and 10 simultaneous connections. Its listed plans at the time of testing were $14.99 monthly, $4.99/month over 15 months, or $2.99/month over 28 months. |
| Surfshark | Lower-cost paid plan | TechRadar reported about 1,000 Mbps in nearby WireGuard tests, unlimited connections, DDoS protection, obfuscated servers and dedicated-IP options. Its guide listed plans starting at $2.49/month and a 30-day guarantee. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Low introductory price and many devices | TechRadar listed $1.33/month on a two-year plan, unlimited devices and servers in 91 countries and 152 locations; its tested WireGuard speed was 436 Mbps. |
| CyberGhost | Broad server selection | TechRadar described it as starting at $2.03/month, with more than 11,500 servers in 100 countries and a 45-day guarantee. |
| Windscribe Free | Trying a free gaming VPN | Top10VPN reported 10 GB of monthly data, free servers in 10 countries, a 6.1/10 rating and 5 ms average ping to a nearby free server. |
| Proton VPN Free | Free use without a monthly data cap | Proton says its Free plan has unlimited bandwidth and is free indefinitely, with fewer features than Plus. Its gaming guidance recommends a Plus server near the game. |
NordVPN: the low-ping premium alternative
Top10VPN measured an 8 ms average ping to a nearby NordVPN server and reported no high lag or sudden frame-rate drops in its Counter-Strike 2 and Rainbow Six Siege sessions. TechRadar’s reported nearby NordLynx speed above 1,000 Mbps is a speed-test result, not a promise of low ping in your own match. NordVPN is a reasonable premium candidate if its nearby endpoints produce stable results on your connection.

ExpressVPN: useful when console setup matters
ExpressVPN combines router support and Smart DNS with Top10VPN’s strong gaming rating and local-ping measurement. Top10VPN also recorded 170 ms average international ping, illustrating why local and distant routes should not be treated as equivalent. Its longer-term listed prices reflect the plans observed at testing, not a guaranteed current checkout quote.
Surfshark, PIA and CyberGhost: compare the whole deal
Surfshark is TechRadar’s budget gaming pick in the cited guide; its unlimited connections may suit a household with several devices. PIA’s lower listed two-year monthly equivalent comes with a lower tested WireGuard speed than the nearby figures reported for NordVPN and Surfshark. Those speed-test numbers were not established as a head-to-head test under identical conditions, so they should not be read as a ranking of actual in-game latency. CyberGhost’s stated server count and guarantee may be relevant if geographic choice or refund time matters, but check current terms before paying.
Rank #2

Windscribe Free: a capped way to test
Windscribe’s free tier may suit occasional play or a short trial of VPN routing, but 10 GB per month can run out with sustained use or other connected activity. Top10VPN’s 5 ms nearby average came from its tested free server; its international result was not directly comparable because the sample was geographically skewed. Do not assume either measurement predicts your connection.
Proton VPN Free: unlimited bandwidth, fewer features
Proton says its Free plan has unlimited bandwidth, remains free indefinitely, contains no privacy-invading ads, does not sell data and keeps no activity logs. The plan has fewer features than Plus. Proton’s gaming page recommends a Plus server near the game and supports WireGuard; it also describes AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption and advertises unlimited bandwidth. Proton’s claim that VPN Accelerator can improve speed by up to 400% is a vendor claim, not an independently established gaming result.

Can a VPN lower ping or stop DDoS attacks?
Sometimes a VPN changes the route enough to improve a particular connection, but it can also add delay by sending traffic through an extra endpoint. Top10VPN cautions that VPNs do not inherently speed up an internet connection or reduce lag. Its guide describes other possible uses: changing NAT conditions through a PC hotspot, avoiding ISP throttling, working around an inherited IP ban, accessing geo-restricted content and protecting against some DoS attacks. A VPN does not shut down a DDoS attack; concealing your IP may make direct targeting harder in some situations, but it is not a substitute for a game’s or ISP’s mitigation.
- Record ping and, if available, jitter with the VPN off while connected to the same game region.
- Connect to a nearby VPN endpoint, then repeat the test in the same game and region.
- Compare results across more than one nearby endpoint at the times you usually play; keep the VPN only if the connection is consistently better for your use.
A provider’s fast backbone or high Mbps result cannot establish that its route to your particular game server will be faster.

How to use a VPN with PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch
A router-based VPN is the most general approach: the console connects through the router, which runs the VPN client. TechRadar lists PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch as consoles that can be covered by configuring a VPN on a router. Top10VPN highlights ExpressVPN’s dedicated router app. Compatibility depends on the router and its firmware, so verify VPN-client protocol support and expected throughput before buying or configuring hardware.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check whether your router or its firmware supports a VPN client and the provider’s supported protocol.
- Follow the VPN provider’s router setup instructions and connect the router to a server near you or the game server.
- Connect the console to that router, then compare in-game ping and stability against your normal connection.
Console setup options and router compatibility differ by model and firmware. Smart DNS, where offered, is not the same thing as routing all console traffic through an encrypted VPN tunnel.

What the test figures can—and cannot—tell you
Top10VPN says its 2026 gaming guide covers 59 VPN services and more than 30,000 total testing hours. Its reported provider results are editorial measurements, not a controlled universal comparison across every provider on the same line, ISP and game server. The 8 ms local averages for NordVPN and ExpressVPN and Windscribe’s 5 ms nearby free-server average are tied to that source’s tests; they are not expected ping for every player. Subscription prices, server counts, refund guarantees and free-plan limits are volatile and may depend on country, plan and date.
