The best VPN for Europe depends on your itinerary, device, and privacy needs—not a provider’s country count. Compare whether a VPN covers the specific countries or cities you need, whether locations are physical or virtual, and which protocols work on your device. Available evidence supports comparing NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Proton VPN on those features, but it does not establish a universal speed winner.
How to choose a VPN for Europe
Start with your route and the devices you will carry. A VPN’s country list is only a starting point: a listed country may not have the city you need, and some providers identify certain locations as virtual. Then confirm that the provider’s available protocols work on your operating system and in the location you plan to use.
- Coverage: Check each destination and, when it matters, the specific city. Confirm whether a location is virtual if you require a physical server in that country.
- Device support: Check the protocol options for your phone, laptop, or router app. Availability can vary by platform and location.
- Privacy: Compare ordinary VPN protocols and leak protections with additional routing features. No VPN guarantees anonymity or makes an insecure device safe.
- Performance: Treat speed figures as meaningful only when the test conditions and route match your needs. A nearby server can help, but a provider’s location list is not a speed test.
How the three providers differ
The comparison below reflects features described on the providers’ own pages, not independent verification of their privacy claims or a Europe-wide performance ranking.

| Provider | Published protocols and features | What to verify for your trip |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | NordVPN lists NordLynx, based on WireGuard, as its default protocol, along with NordWhisper, IKEv2/IPSec, and OpenVPN. It also describes Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, P2P, and obfuscated servers. (NordVPN server list) | Check the live server list for your destinations and confirm that your device supports the protocol and specialty feature you intend to use. |
| ExpressVPN | Its location table lists Lightway UDP/TCP, OpenVPN UDP/TCP, IKEv2, and WireGuard. The table notes that WireGuard is available only in its iOS, Android, and Windows apps; IKEv2 includes router apps. Some locations are marked virtual. (ExpressVPN server locations) | Inspect the location-level protocol details and virtual-location labels. Do not assume every protocol is available on every device or in every country. |
| Proton VPN | Proton VPN lists OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard. Its Secure Core feature routes traffic through a protected server in Switzerland, Iceland, or Sweden before it reaches an exit server elsewhere; Proton also says it guards against DNS and IPv6 leaks. (Proton VPN Secure Core) | Confirm that Secure Core and your preferred protocol fit your device and intended route; the feature description is Proton’s own. |
What the available speed figures do—and do not—show
NordVPN/Nord Security’s Comprehensive VPN Testing Report 2025 lists 788 Mbps for ExpressVPN using Lightway and 758 Mbps for Proton VPN using WireGuard. These are figures reported in a provider-published report, not guaranteed speeds for subscribers or a Europe-specific ranking. The cited figures alone do not establish that either service will be faster on your route, device, network, or chosen server.
