There is no single best VPN for every digital nomad. The right choice depends on the countries and networks on your route, how reliably the VPN reconnects when you move between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and whether its privacy features and device limit fit your setup. Proton VPN and ExpressVPN publish travel-specific features worth comparing; TechRadar names NordVPN its overall pick in its 2026 travel roundup. That ranking is TechRadar’s editorial judgment, not a universal test result.

What matters most in a VPN for digital nomads?

A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN provider’s server. Websites then see the server’s IP address rather than your device’s IP address. This can add protection on hotel, café, and other shared networks, but it is not a guarantee against every Wi-Fi threat and does not make you anonymous. You also shift some trust from the local network or internet provider to the VPN provider.

Use these criteria to judge whether a service fits your travel routine:

  • Coverage for your actual route: Check whether the provider has locations relevant to the countries you visit and the home-country services you need. A headline country count does not establish that a particular location will be available or perform well for you.
  • Network switching: Look for reliable reconnection when moving between Wi-Fi and mobile data. ExpressVPN says its Lightway protocol is optimized for mobile use and network switching; that is the provider’s claim, not a guarantee about every device or network.
  • Connection-failure protection: A kill switch can block device traffic if the VPN connection drops. Check how it behaves on your operating system and whether you need to enable it.
  • Device and platform support: Count your laptop, phone, tablet, and other devices, then check the supported operating systems and simultaneous-connection limit for the plan you intend to buy.
  • Privacy evidence: Review the provider’s logging policy, audit documentation, audit date and scope, and whether its applications are open source. An audit is evidence about a defined subject and period, not proof that every privacy claim is permanently settled.
  • Restricted networks: If you expect VPN traffic to be blocked or disrupted, check for obfuscation or alternative routing. Neither feature guarantees a connection in every country or on every network.
  • Terms and support: Before paying, verify the current plan price, renewal terms, refund policy, and support availability. Offers and plan details can change.

How the leading travel candidates differ

The figures below are provider-published specifications or a third-party review’s reported details, not results from a single standardized comparison. Server counts are not directly comparable: providers may define and update network locations differently, and a larger count alone does not establish better coverage for your itinerary.

Option Travel-relevant details Evidence and qualification
Proton VPN Over 20,000 servers in over 140 countries; up to 10 devices. Its feature information lists a kill switch, Stealth, alternative routing, VPN Accelerator, Secure Core, and open-source apps. Figures and feature descriptions are Proton’s own, on pages reviewed in 2026. Proton says it commissions regular independent audits. Its travel page warns that slow or unreliable local internet can still noticeably slow a VPN connection. Streaming on the travel page requires a Plus account and Plus server; do not assume that is included in the free plan. Proton’s travel VPN information and feature list.
ExpressVPN 113 countries and 214 locations; Lightway is described as optimized for mobile use and switching networks. Its travel page also describes obfuscation, split tunneling, unlimited bandwidth, and TrustedServer RAM-only servers. Network figures and features are ExpressVPN’s provider-published claims on a page reviewed in 2026. ExpressVPN refers to audits by KPMG and PwC; check the underlying audit documentation for its date and scope before treating it as evidence for a particular claim. NordVPN TechRadar’s 2026 travel review lists 150 countries and a maximum of 10 devices. It also discusses obfuscated servers, streaming tests, 24/7 chat, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. TechRadar names it the overall pick in that roundup; this is the publication’s editorial ranking and reported review details, not an independent universal verdict. Which option fits your travel pattern?

Choose by route, not by the biggest number

Start with the countries where you will work, the countries whose services you may need to reach, and the locations the provider actually offers. Proton’s published network is stated as over 20,000 servers in over 140 countries; ExpressVPN states 113 countries and 214 locations; TechRadar lists NordVPN at 150 countries. Those figures come from different sources and definitions, so they should not be read as a like-for-like performance ranking.

Prioritize switching behavior if you move often

If you frequently leave a café, board a train, or move from Wi-Fi to cellular data, reconnection behavior may matter more than a high server count. ExpressVPN specifically describes Lightway as designed for mobile use and network switching. Treat this as a feature claim to weigh alongside your own device and network needs, not as proof that interruptions never happen.

Check restrictive-network features only when relevant

Proton describes Stealth and alternative routing, while ExpressVPN describes obfuscation. These features are intended to help where VPN traffic is restricted, but they cannot promise service in every jurisdiction or on every network. The sources here do not establish destination-specific VPN laws; check local rules before travel.

Choose the provider whose evidence you can evaluate

Open-source apps and independent audits can help a reader inspect privacy claims. Proton says its apps are open source and that it commissions regular independent audits. ExpressVPN refers to audits by KPMG and PwC. In either case, consult the actual reports for the date, scope, and systems examined rather than treating the word “audited” as a blanket assurance.

How to choose and set up a travel VPN

  1. Map your needs: List your destinations, any home-country services you need, the devices you will carry, and whether you expect networks that restrict VPNs.
  2. Verify plan details: On the provider’s current plan and support pages, confirm the device limit, supported platforms, included features, renewal price, refund terms, and live-support hours. Do not rely on an old offer or review for current pricing.
  3. Install and sign in before departure: Get the official app for each device and confirm that your account works while you still have dependable internet access.
  4. Review connection protections: Find the app’s kill-switch setting, learn what happens if the VPN disconnects, and check whether the app offers automatic connection on untrusted Wi-Fi.
  5. Test your routine: Connect on Wi-Fi, switch to mobile data, then reconnect to Wi-Fi. Check that the app reports a protected connection and that essential work services still function.
  6. Keep a fallback: If a network blocks VPN connections, try a supported alternative-routing or obfuscation feature if available. If it still fails, use another trusted connection rather than assuming the VPN will work everywhere.

What a VPN will not solve while you travel

  • It does not replace device security. Keep your operating system and apps updated, use multifactor authentication, and protect accounts with strong, unique credentials.
  • It does not guarantee anonymity or prevent every attack. A VPN protects the connection to its server and changes the IP address websites see; it does not make unsafe downloads or compromised accounts safe.
  • It does not guarantee access. Banks, work systems, streaming services, and local networks may block VPN connections or restrict access based on their own rules. Availability can change.
  • It cannot fix poor local internet. Proton warns that a slow or unreliable local connection can still make VPN use noticeably slow.
  • It does not establish legal permission. Check the rules that apply in each destination; the cited provider and review pages do not establish VPN legality by country.
