TechRadar’s 2026 tests found that NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA) and Proton VPN could access BBC iPlayer in at least some test conditions. That is a snapshot, not a guarantee: iPlayer may detect or block a VPN server, and switching UK servers sometimes helped reviewers.
There is an important qualification before choosing one: BBC guidance says iPlayer is available only in the UK and tied to a valid UK TV Licence, while the BBC’s Terms of Use cite using a VPN to watch iPlayer outside the UK as an example of accessing content the user is not allowed to access. A VPN does not change those terms or your licence requirements.
What the BBC says about watching iPlayer abroad
BBC Help says, “iPlayer is only available in the UK, and access is tied to a valid UK TV licence.” The BBC distinguishes this from its BBC.com subscription, which offers different international content. See BBC Help’s explanation of iPlayer and the BBC subscription.

TV Licensing says viewers cannot currently stream or download iPlayer programmes while abroad. It says programmes downloaded before travelling can still be accessed overseas, usually for 30 days after they are shown on live TV. Its guidance also distinguishes travel within the UK: a person with a licence at their home address can use iPlayer on an unplugged device, while a device plugged in at a separate address requires coverage there. Read TV Licensing’s iPlayer and TV Licence guidance.

The BBC Terms of Use dated 31 March 2022 give “using a VPN service so you can watch BBC iPlayer when you’re outside the UK” as an example in their section on accessing content from outside the UK that a user is not allowed to access. The terms also say the BBC may suspend or terminate use of a service or an account if its terms are not followed. This is the BBC’s stated terms position, not a claim that a VPN changes eligibility. The terms are available as a BBC Terms of Use PDF.
Which VPNs did reviewers find worked with iPlayer?
TechRadar’s 2026 comparison ranked NordVPN first overall and reported successful iPlayer access in its tests. The same review included Surfshark, ExpressVPN, PIA and Proton VPN among its leading choices. The table summarizes the review’s reported findings; it does not predict whether a server will work for you later. Counts and locations are TechRadar’s snapshot and may change. | ExpressVPN | Included among the review’s top choices; a distinct connection outcome is not stated in the review details summarized here. | Four locations; server count not stated by TechRadar. | TechRadar discusses apps for Apple TV and Fire TV Stick. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Manchester initially had a problem; switching to Southampton resolved it during the reported test. | Three locations; server count not stated by TechRadar. | The result illustrates that server choice can matter; it is not a promise about later access. |
| Proton VPN | TechRadar reported reliable access during testing; reviewers resolved a minor early picture-quality issue by changing server. | 36 servers in two locations. | Picture quality improved after the server change in that test. |
TechRadar says its reviewers used a Lenovo laptop and an iPhone 13, connected to the closest UK server and tried to stream a programme. When the first server failed, they disconnected and tried another. It says speed testing used a 1 Gbps line and considered HD and 4K streaming. These are TechRadar’s methods and observations, not independent tests by this article.

How to choose among the reviewed VPNs
For the strongest review result
NordVPN is the clearest pick if you are following TechRadar’s ranking and want the service it placed first after reporting successful iPlayer access. That says what happened in that review, not what will happen with every server, account or future connection.
For server choice and troubleshooting
PIA’s Manchester-to-Southampton result and Proton VPN’s server change show why a provider with multiple UK server options may be useful when one connection fails or picture quality is poor. They do not establish that switching will always work. TechRadar’s counts give a rough view of the locations available in its snapshot, but location counts alone do not prove access, speed or privacy quality.

For Apple TV or Fire TV Stick
TechRadar specifically discusses ExpressVPN apps for Apple TV and Fire TV Stick. Check compatibility for your exact device and operating system on the provider’s current support pages before subscribing; the review’s device discussion is not a complete compatibility list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor free VPNs
TechRadar does not recommend free VPNs for iPlayer, citing data caps, smaller server pools and restricted bandwidth that can limit streaming, as well as the possibility that free VPN IP addresses are detected. Treat that as TechRadar’s recommendation rather than a rule that every free service behaves identically.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Why a VPN connection can stop working
Reviewers report that iPlayer can detect or block VPN connections. The result can differ by server, and a connection that worked during a review may fail later if an IP address is blocked. Top10VPN’s comments about refreshed UK IP pools are an editorial observation; they are not a BBC description of its detection systems.
For NordVPN customers, the provider’s troubleshooting guidance suggests connecting to a UK server, checking for DNS leaks, trying another server in the same country, and clearing the browser or streaming app cache. It also says customers should use the service in compliance with applicable laws and the terms of services they access. These are provider-specific suggestions, not a guarantee of access. See NordVPN’s BBC iPlayer troubleshooting page.
What to check before paying
The review findings above do not establish current prices, renewal rates, refund periods, or complete privacy-feature comparisons. Offers and terms change, so check each provider’s live checkout and service documentation before committing rather than treating old promotional pricing as a current deal.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Total cost: Compare the full initial term, the renewal amount, billing frequency, currency and any applicable taxes, not just the displayed monthly equivalent.
- Cancellation and refunds: Confirm the refund or cancellation terms for the exact plan and country at checkout.
- Your device: Verify that the VPN app supports the device and operating system you intend to use, especially for smart TVs and streaming sticks.
- Privacy and security: Review current provider documentation for the privacy and security features you care about. A successful streaming connection does not establish the quality of those features.
- Current server performance: Look for recent, attributed testing and remember that a result from one day or server can change.
There is no price comparison here because the available review details do not establish current plan prices and renewal terms consistently across all five services.
