There is no universally agreed best VPN for Australia: TechRadar and Security.org rank NordVPN first, while Top10VPN names ExpressVPN its top pick. The right choice depends on whether you need Australian streaming while travelling, privacy features, coverage for several household devices, or a particular plan and refund window. Treat rankings and streaming tests as dated snapshots, not guarantees.
Which VPN is best for Australia?
For a broad all-rounder, NordVPN is the most consistent first-place choice among the reviewed comparisons: TechRadar and Security.org both rank it first. If you prioritize streaming and Australian access, Top10VPN ranks ExpressVPN first in its Australia comparison. Proton VPN is the privacy-oriented pick in Security.org and VPN Guide Australia. Those are publisher-specific conclusions, not a single independent consensus.
These recommendations reflect different publishers, test methods, and dates. TechRadar reports NordVPN servers in Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney, successful tests with several Australian and international streaming services, and router compatibility. Top10VPN reports 600 ExpressVPN servers in those five Australian cities; that is its reported dataset, not a figure directly comparable with another publisher’s count.

VPN Guide Australia reports a separate speed test conducted in March 2026 on a Sydney NBN 100/40 Mbps connection. In that particular test, it measured NordVPN at 89 Mbps, ExpressVPN at 84 Mbps, and Proton VPN at 78 Mbps; the page was last updated in May 2026. Those results do not predict performance on another ISP, in another city, at another time, or on another plan.

How to choose based on your use
Australian streaming while overseas
Look for the specific Australian services and destinations you intend to use, then check them from your own device and location. TechRadar reports successful tests for NordVPN across Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, ITV, Channel 4, 9Now, and 10Play. A reviewer’s successful connection is only a snapshot: streaming platforms can detect VPN use and access may change.
Privacy and security
Proton VPN is identified as a privacy pick by Security.org and VPN Guide Australia. Compare the particular plan, privacy policy, and available independent audit evidence rather than treating a label as proof of total anonymity. An audit has a scope and date; it does not establish that a service makes every user anonymous.

Several devices at home
For the options covered here, check the provider’s current device limits and app support for each device you plan to use. Router compatibility can provide router-level coverage, but a router is optional: most readers can use provider apps on supported devices without buying hardware.

Australian server locations and measured speed are separate considerations. A provider may have servers in a city that is convenient for you but still perform differently on your ISP, device, plan, and time of day. Use the narrow test context above as one data point, not a nationwide speed ranking.

What to verify before subscribing
- City coverage: Check for servers near the Australian city where you live or the location you need. Do not combine server counts from different review sites as if they were measured the same way and on the same date.
- Streaming services: Confirm whether the service you need works on your device and in your location; access can change even after a reviewer’s successful test.
- Full-term cost: Compare the total payment and term, not just a discounted monthly equivalent. TechRadar notes that NordVPN’s renewal pricing rises. Check the current checkout for renewal rate, included features, and refund conditions.
- Device limits and apps: Confirm support for your operating systems, streaming devices, and household connection needs before paying.
- Privacy evidence: Read the provider’s policy and the scope of any independent audit. A VPN encrypts a connection between your device and the VPN service; it does not by itself guarantee anonymity or protect against every online risk.
How much weight should you give VPN rankings?
Reviewers use different methods, so their rankings answer slightly different questions. Top10VPN says it tested 59 VPNs and logged more than 30,000 total hours of testing in its 2026 methodology. Security.org reports more than 2,500 research hours, more than 50 VPNs reviewed, 300 speed tests, six experts consulted, and five recommended services for its 2026 Australia comparison. These are publishers’ descriptions of their review processes, not Australian market statistics.
VPN Guide Australia says it tested four providers over three weeks and reports the March 2026 Sydney speed test described above. Its stated exclusions include torrenting throughput, gaming latency, VPN-over-Tor, obfuscated-server performance under active censorship, and split-tunneling edge cases. A ranking should not be read as evidence about scenarios its publisher did not test.

VPN use in Australia: a narrow legal context
A 24 September 2025 Australian Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts document discusses VPN detection and geolocation enforcement in regulated sectors such as online gambling and video streaming. It gives Netflix as an example of a service that may limit content when it detects VPN use. This is context about enforcement, not a general legal guide to VPN subscriptions or advice about bypassing a particular restriction. The general legality of VPN subscriptions is not established by that document.
