CyberInsider’s February 26, 2026 review recommends NordVPN as its best all-around pick, Surfshark as a lower-cost option, Proton VPN for privacy-focused users, and ExpressVPN for ease of use. Those are the outlet’s findings—not a market-wide certification or independently reproduced test results. Your best choice depends on where you need a server, which devices and services you use, and the provider’s current subscription and renewal terms.
What are the best VPNs for Australia?
These are the four services CyberInsider selected after reporting that it tested performance and leak protection. The roles and results below reflect that outlet’s article, updated February 26, 2026. Its published speed figures are test results, not speeds you should expect on your own connection.
| VPN | CyberInsider’s positioning | Reported speed result |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Best all-around | Peak of 903 Mbps in CyberInsider’s reported testing |
| Surfshark | Lower-cost option | 752 Mbps in CyberInsider’s reported testing |
| Proton VPN | Privacy-focused option | Not stated in the cited CyberInsider material |
| ExpressVPN | User-friendly option | Not stated in the cited CyberInsider material |
CyberInsider does not identify an independent laboratory or provide a complete reproducible protocol, sample size, or raw dataset in the material summarized here. Treat “only four passed all tests” as that publisher’s selection from its own evaluation, not proof that every other VPN failed a universal standard.
How should you choose between the four?
Start with what you need the VPN to do, then verify the details that can change between plans, apps, and dates. The cited comparison does not establish current prices, renewal rates, refund conditions, exact device limits, or a complete service-by-service feature table, so check those points with each provider before subscribing.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Server location: Check whether the service offers a location near you or the Australian city you need. The source reports Australian server locations, but the details should be verified directly because locations can change.
- Speed: Use the CyberInsider figures only as results from its reported testing. Your speed also depends on your connection, chosen server, distance, congestion, and device.
- Privacy and security: Review the provider’s current privacy policy and look for independent audit information. Check for a kill switch and leak protection in the specific app and operating system you plan to use.
- Devices and routers: Confirm support for your devices and whether router setup is available for your model. The cited material describes ExpressVPN router apps and limited Surfshark router support, but does not test or recommend a particular router.
- Streaming: Look for tests of the particular Australian or overseas streaming service you want to use. Access can change, and a VPN cannot guarantee that a service will work or that a particular catalogue will be available.
- Total subscription cost: Compare the renewal price—not only a first-term discount—along with the billing period, refund terms, and any device or connection limits. Confirm the current terms on the provider’s site.
Which VPN has Australian servers?
CyberInsider lists Australian server locations for all four of its picks: NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN. The information available here does not establish a complete current list of cities or how many servers each has. Check the provider’s server list or app before choosing if you need a particular city or nearby connection.
Can you use a VPN to watch Australian TV overseas?
A VPN can route your connection through an Australian server, which may be useful when trying to reach a service from abroad. That does not guarantee access: streaming services can restrict VPN connections, and availability depends on the service’s own rules and detection systems. The cited comparison discusses streaming compatibility, but the material here does not establish a current, service-by-service list of channels that work.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Are VPNs legal in Australia?
The legal sources cited here do not establish a blanket rule about the legality of VPN use in every situation. They do establish a narrower point about social media: under the Online Safety Act framework, providers of covered age-restricted platforms must take reasonable steps to prevent Australian users under 16 from holding accounts. The law is framed around covered platforms and provider obligations; it does not establish that a VPN is a lawful way to bypass those rules, that every online service is covered, or that connecting to an Australian VPN server automatically triggers an age check.

An amendment strengthening enforcement of the social-media minimum-age framework took effect on September 11, 2026, after CyberInsider’s February review. The current Online Safety Act compilation cited for this topic is in force from September 12, 2026. Those dates matter when reading a VPN article updated earlier in the year.

Does a VPN stop your ISP seeing your browsing?
A VPN changes the route your traffic takes and shifts some trust from your internet provider to the VPN provider. It does not make you invisible to every party: websites may still identify you through accounts, cookies, or other signals, and the VPN provider becomes a service you must trust.
Australia’s telecommunications data-retention law requires providers to retain specified categories of telecommunications data. The statute sets a two-year period after creation for some categories and a period that runs two years after account closure for certain others. That requirement is not a statement that providers record a complete list of every website a customer visits, nor does it mean a VPN makes all activity invisible to all parties.

What the four-way comparison can—and cannot—tell you
CyberInsider’s shortlist is a useful starting point if you want to compare four named services, but it is not enough to establish which one is best for every Australian user. Its reported speed figures are not independently replicated here, and the source material does not provide all the current commercial and technical details needed for a complete buying comparison. Before paying, confirm the specific server locations, app features, streaming service compatibility, renewal price, refund terms, and device limits that matter to you.
