No single VPN is the best choice for every pair of AR glasses. Whether a VPN can protect your glasses depends on how the glasses reach the internet. A VPN on your phone protects the phone’s traffic, and nothing in provider documentation shows that a separately connected pair of glasses sends its traffic through that phone. Identify your model’s connection path first, then check whether the manufacturer or VPN provider documents support for that exact device.
Why a phone VPN may not cover your glasses
A VPN tunnel protects traffic that passes through the device or gateway running it. A VPN app on a companion phone therefore protects that phone. Whether a pair of glasses also routes its traffic through that phone is a design decision made by the manufacturer, and it can differ from one model to the next. Assume nothing until the manufacturer’s connectivity documentation for your model confirms it.
Step 1: Identify the connection path
Work through these three questions in order. The answer determines which VPN option is possible at all.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Do the glasses join Wi-Fi on their own? If yes, a VPN has to run on the glasses (only possible where the platform supports VPN apps) or on the router the glasses use.
- Do the glasses depend on a paired phone for internet? If yes, a VPN on that phone is the app-level option, but only if the manufacturer documents that glasses traffic passes through the phone.
- Does the device run an operating system that accepts VPN apps? Headsets such as the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest do; many lightweight glasses do not expose an app store or VPN setting at all.
Headsets with documented VPN apps
Three setups have direct, provider-documented installs on the headset itself. These are spatial-computing or VR headsets, not lightweight AR or camera glasses, so they show what is possible on those platforms and say nothing about smart glasses in general.

- YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
- ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
- 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
- LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
- WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.

Apple Vision Pro with Surfshark
Surfshark’s setup guide describes this sequence:
- Choose a Surfshark plan.
- Install the VPN from the App Store directly on the Vision Pro.
- Sign in with your account.
- Connect to a server location of your choice.
This describes setup only. It is not independent testing of speed, privacy, or the headset’s networking behavior in general.
Meta Quest with ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN’s Meta Quest app protects the whole headset, not just one app or the browser. Its guide notes that Automatic is selected by default and recommends it for the best experience. If you want protection limited to a browser session, ExpressVPN’s browser extension is a separate product with browser-only coverage.

Meta Quest with NordVPN
NordVPN’s Quest guide says the VPN runs on the headset, so it protects Quest traffic without a router or a shared connection. The guide also covers casting, which is where most setups run into trouble. See the section below.

NordVPN’s Quest guide says that when the headset cannot see the casting target under a VPN, the two should be on the same Wi-Fi network and local network discovery should be enabled. Work through these checks in order:

- Confirm the headset and the casting target are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Enable local network discovery, as NordVPN’s Quest guide describes.
- If casting still fails, disconnect the VPN briefly. If casting works without the VPN, the tunnel is blocking local discovery; if it fails either way, the problem lies elsewhere on the network.
Phone VPNs and mobile compatibility
Surfshark’s mobile app is available for Android and iOS and encrypts phone data on Wi-Fi or mobile data. This confirms phone-level protection for the phone. It does not confirm protection for glasses paired to it.
NordVPN’s listed mobile compatibility covers Android 9 and later and iOS 17 and later. Its support page also lists legacy qualifications, so check the current requirements on the provider’s page for your exact phone before installing.

Router-level VPN as a fallback
ExpressVPN lists supported router families, including its own Fortify and ExpressVPN Aircove, plus Asus, Linksys, and Netgear. It also offers manual configuration for other router families. According to ExpressVPN, connecting a router to its VPN protects every device on that network under one connection. Any glasses that join that Wi-Fi network would therefore be covered in principle, but the router route is conditional: match the provider’s instructions to your exact router model and firmware version before buying hardware for this purpose.

What to compare once you know your path
- Exact device and OS support: confirm your specific model and operating system version, not the brand.
- Coverage scope: full-device protection and browser-only protection are different products.
- Traffic route: headset, phone, or router, as established in Step 1.
- Local network and casting: confirm that discovery and casting work with the VPN enabled.
- Setup effort and network switching: a router protects every device, but a headset app must be set up on each device.
- Price, renewal terms, and privacy documentation: check these directly with each provider; they change.
What the current evidence does not establish
Provider documentation describes setup and stated features. It does not include independent speed tests, privacy audits of AR glasses, or controlled comparisons of VPN performance on glasses. Surfshark’s comparison of the three providers is written by Surfshark, so treat its claims as those of an interested party. The documentation also does not show whether specific lightweight glasses models accept VPN apps, route traffic through a phone, or connect independently to Wi-Fi. No VPN can be named the best for AR glasses on this basis.
