For an Apple TV that supports tvOS 17 or later, start with a provider’s native app: ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and NordVPN each document an Apple TV app setup. That makes them a compatibility shortlist, not a performance ranking—official setup guides do not establish which service is fastest, most reliable for streaming, or best value.
If your Apple TV cannot run a native app, a VPN-capable router may route its traffic through a VPN. SmartDNS is another provider-specific option, but it changes DNS handling rather than protecting traffic with a VPN tunnel. Choose based on your Apple TV model, the protection you need, and the streaming service’s terms.

ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and NordVPN publish setup guidance for Apple TV. Their documentation establishes supported setup routes; it does not establish comparative speed, price, streaming success, or overall quality. How to choose the right Apple TV VPN setup
Use a native app on a supported Apple TV
Check your Apple TV model and tvOS version first. ExpressVPN and Surfshark explicitly specify tvOS 17 or later in their setup guidance. If your device meets the requirement, install the provider’s app from the App Store, sign in, and connect using the provider’s instructions. NordVPN also documents a native Apple TV app route.

Use a VPN-capable router for an older Apple TV
A router configured for VPN service can route connected devices, including an Apple TV, through a VPN. This can be useful when the Apple TV itself cannot run the provider’s app, but setup applies at the router level rather than inside the Apple TV. ExpressVPN documents GL.iNet Fortify as a router option; its ExpressVPN feature requires an active ExpressVPN subscription. Consider SmartDNS only if its trade-offs fit
SmartDNS changes DNS handling and may be offered as a way to support streaming access on devices without a native VPN app. It is not equivalent to an encrypted VPN connection. NordVPN says its SmartDNS does not protect a device as a VPN does and may not work with every streaming service. ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer is similarly described as a streaming aid, not a source of VPN privacy and security. Surfshark says its SmartDNS feature has been discontinued, so it should not be treated as a current Surfshark fallback.

How to set up a VPN on Apple TV
Native app
- Confirm compatibility: Check the Apple TV model and tvOS version. The ExpressVPN and Surfshark setup instructions specify tvOS 17 or later.
- Install the provider app: Open the App Store on Apple TV, find the provider’s app, and install it. Follow that provider’s current setup guide for sign-in and any required account authorization.
- Connect: Open the app, sign in, and select a server location. The exact controls and available locations depend on the provider and app version.
- Check the result: Confirm the app shows a VPN connection, then test the streaming app you intend to use. Setup documentation alone does not guarantee a particular service will work through a VPN.
Router VPN
- Check that your router supports the VPN provider’s configuration and that you have an active subscription where required.
- Set up the VPN on the router using the provider’s instructions. ExpressVPN documents GL.iNet Fortify as one option for its router feature.
- Connect the Apple TV to that router’s network and select the VPN location in the router configuration as directed by the provider.
- Test the connection and streaming app. Router setup can affect other devices using that network, depending on how routing is configured.
SmartDNS
Follow the provider’s Apple TV instructions for enabling SmartDNS and entering the specified DNS settings. NordVPN’s documented process includes enabling the feature and configuring DNS on the Apple TV. DNS setup does not create a VPN tunnel or provide the same device protection. Because service compatibility can vary, check the provider’s current guide and the streaming service’s terms.

- Apple TV compatibility: Confirm your model, tvOS version, and the provider’s current app requirements.
