Surfshark, Private Internet Access (PIA), ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Proton VPN are five options that reviewers reported working with Prime Video in their own tests. None is a guaranteed way to access a particular title or catalog: Amazon says to deactivate VPN or proxy servers when playback fails, and blocking can vary by server, region, device, and time.
There is no single agreed winner. Security.org ranked Surfshark first in its 2026 comparison, while TechRadar ranked NordVPN first in its own 2026 guide. Treat those as separate reviewers’ results, not a universal ranking.
Five VPN options reviewers reported working with Prime Video
The distinctions below reflect the cited publications’ tests and recommendations, not a promise that a service will work with your account, device, location, or chosen title.
| VPN | What the cited review found | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Surfshark | Security.org ranked it first in its 2026 comparison and picked it for bypassing Prime Video’s VPN blocker. | This was Security.org’s test result; access may differ by server, region, device, and time. Security.org’s comparison. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Security.org ranked it second and distinguished it for U.S. regional content. | The finding does not assure access to every U.S. title or server. Security.org’s comparison. |
| ExpressVPN | Security.org highlighted it for devices without VPN apps. ExpressVPN lists Amazon Fire TV app support and provides Prime Video troubleshooting guidance. | ExpressVPN’s guidance says to connect to a server location matching the country where you are currently located to comply with its and Amazon Prime Video’s terms. It also says an account billing address can affect some title availability. Security.org’s comparison, ExpressVPN’s troubleshooting guide, and ExpressVPN’s Amazon Fire TV app page. |
| NordVPN | Security.org cited its security features; TechRadar ranked it first overall in its own 2026 guide. | The rankings differ because they are separate publications’ assessments. Security.org’s comparison and TechRadar’s 2026 guide. |
| Proton VPN | Security.org included it, and TechRadar reported accessing Prime Video with it in testing. | TechRadar also reported excessive buffering and connectivity issues. Security.org’s comparison and TechRadar’s 2026 guide. |
Security.org says it tested over 50 VPNs before selecting six for its guide. Its comparison includes Surfshark, PIA, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Hotspot Shield. Any rankings, prices, server counts, feature listings, or availability results on that page belong to its own 2026 comparison context; they are not timeless product facts.

Why a VPN may not play a Prime Video title
Prime Video can reject a VPN or proxy connection. Amazon’s help page instructs users facing playback problems to “Deactivate any VPN or proxy servers.” That instruction comes from Amazon’s playback troubleshooting page, “Issues While Playing Prime Video Titles”.
A reviewer’s successful test is a snapshot, not a guarantee that the same server will work later. And the VPN server alone may not determine which titles are available: ExpressVPN’s troubleshooting guide notes that the billing address associated with an Amazon account can affect some title availability.

Choose based on your device and the evidence you need
- For a reviewer’s top-ranked blocker-bypass option: Surfshark was Security.org’s first-ranked choice in its comparison.
- For U.S. regional-content testing: PIA was Security.org’s second-ranked choice and its U.S. regional-content pick; that does not cover every title or server.
- For Fire TV app support: ExpressVPN lists an Amazon Fire TV app and publishes setup and troubleshooting information for Fire TV and Fire Stick. Check support for your exact device model before installing.
- For a security-features distinction: Security.org highlighted NordVPN. TechRadar separately ranked NordVPN first overall in its 2026 guide.
- For a privacy-oriented option: Proton VPN appears in both comparisons, but TechRadar reported buffering and connectivity problems during its tests.
Reviewers do not reach identical rankings. Security.org selected six providers after saying it tested over 50 VPNs, while TechRadar’s guide has its own order and testing observations. Compare the criteria and caveats attached to each review rather than treating the lists as one combined league table.
Set up a VPN on a Fire TV device
ExpressVPN lists Amazon Fire TV as a supported app platform and provides Fire TV/Fire Stick app-management guidance. That makes Fire TV relevant if you need a streaming device with VPN app support, but the cited sources do not establish that a particular current Fire TV Stick model is best or that any model will make Prime Video accept a VPN connection.

- Open Prime Video and try playback. If you see a VPN or proxy error, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than assuming another server will restore access.
ExpressVPN’s provider guidance states: “To comply with the Amazon Prime Video Terms of Use and ExpressVPN Terms of Service, you should connect to a server location that matches the country where you are currently located.” See its Prime Video troubleshooting guide.

- Disable the VPN or proxy and retry. This is Amazon’s stated first step for playback issues involving VPN or proxy servers.
- Check the app and device. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking app/device status and date and time settings.
- Confirm the title’s availability for your account. ExpressVPN notes that billing address can affect some title availability, so a VPN connection alone may not resolve a title restriction.
- Review the VPN provider’s current troubleshooting instructions. Access behavior can change, and a result reported by a reviewer may not match your server or device.
Amazon’s official steps are on its Prime Video playback troubleshooting page.
