There is no single best VPN for everyone in 2026. The right service depends on what you need it to do: protect traffic on public Wi-Fi, get the fastest connection for downloads, stay within a tight budget, or simply set up an app in a few minutes. Published 2026 tests point to a short list of providers that score well on particular criteria, but each test uses different methods, samples and dates, so a ranking from one source does not transfer to another. The results below are third-party tests and published comparisons; this guide does not add lab results of its own. Use them to build a shortlist, then check each candidate against the criteria in the sections that follow.
What the 2026 test results show
Three recent sources cover different parts of the question. Their methods are not the same, so read each row as a separate result rather than one combined score.
| Source and date | What was measured and how | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Security.org, 2026 VPN guide | More than 50 VPNs tested over nine months. Speed measured with Ookla on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, with ten tests per VPN from nearby and distant servers, compared with a no-VPN baseline. Kill switches checked by deliberately dropping connections; privacy policies compared with recent third-party audits. | Its picks: NordVPN (overall), Proton VPN (speed), Private Internet Access (beginners), Hotspot Shield (free VPN). These are its rankings, not a consensus. |
| Artifact Security performance test, round published June 2026, as summarized by NordVPN on August 10, 2026 | Throughput, stability, latency and connection time across routes, using commercially acquired apps in isolated, repeatable environments. NordVPN says the design is consistent with the VPN Testing Guidelines published by AMTSO. | Overall scores: NordVPN 91, ExpressVPN 84, Proton VPN 83, Mullvad 70. The summary is vendor-hosted and reflects one test round. |
| TechRadar, 2026 speed comparison | Tested on a 10 Gbps cloud computer and on everyday connections and devices, throughout the year, across multiple protocols and routes. | PrivadoVPN 2,334 Mbps over WireGuard in its local test. Proton VPN above 1,500 Mbps on a US-to-UK connection. |
Two points matter for reading that table. First, the speed figures describe one publication’s setup. A 2,334 Mbps result over WireGuard on a local test says little about the speed you will see from your home connection to a distant server. Second, the NordVPN-hosted summary of the Artifact Security test is a vendor’s account of an independent test. It is useful evidence, but it is not a neutral ranking.

Match the provider to your priority
Start with the one or two things you need most. The table below maps each priority to the evidence available for it and the trade-off you accept.
#1 Best Overall

| Your priority | Candidate from the evidence | What supports it | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-round use | NordVPN | Security.org’s overall pick for 2026; 91 in the Artifact Security test as summarized by NordVPN. | Both results come from sources with a stake in the outcome or a single test round. Confirm the current audit status yourself. |
| Raw speed | Proton VPN | Security.org’s speed pick; 83 in the Artifact test; above 1,500 Mbps US-to-UK in TechRadar’s test. | Speed depends on your route and protocol. The US-to-UK figure is not your result. |
| First-time users | Private Internet Access | Security.org’s pick for beginners in its 2026 guide. | The guide does not publish a separate speed or audit result for this pick in the material reviewed. |
| Free use | Hotspot Shield (free tier) | Security.org’s pick for the free category in 2026. | Free plans are not the same as full paid service. Check data, server and feature limits before relying on one. |
| Budget | Private Internet Access | Named among the picks in TechRadar’s 2026 inexpensive-service comparison. | Prices and promotions change. Verify the billed amount at checkout before comparing. |
| Privacy-first use | No single pick is supported by the sources cited here | Audit details must be read directly from each provider’s published reports. | Mullvad appears in the Artifact test with a score of 70, which reflects that test’s criteria, not its privacy record. |
No source cited here tests streaming access, so this guide cannot recommend a provider for streaming. Geo-access can also change without notice and may conflict with a service’s terms of use.
How to judge a “no logs” claim
A no-logs policy is a claim. It becomes useful only when you can check its evidence. Look for these items:

- Audit scope: which product, apps and infrastructure the auditor examined. An audit of the website alone does not cover the app.
- Audit date: the period covered. Systems change, so an old report describes old systems.
- Auditor and public report: who performed the audit and whether the full report, not just a summary, is public.
- Legal-request history: whether the provider has published transparency reports showing how it responded to requests.
An audit describes what was examined on the date it was examined. It does not prove future conduct, and Tom’s Guide notes that audits can miss issues.

Check the security behavior, not only the feature list
Three behaviors can be tested on your own device:
- Protocol options: whether the app offers WireGuard and OpenVPN, and which one is the default.
- DNS and IP leak protection: whether your DNS queries and real IP address stay hidden while connected.
- Kill switch: whether traffic stops when the VPN connection drops.
Test the kill switch yourself
- Before connecting, open any IP lookup page in your browser and note your public IP address.
- Connect to a server and reload the same page. The address should change to the VPN server’s address.
- Open the app’s settings and turn on the kill switch. Setting names vary by app, so look for a term such as “Kill switch” or “Internet kill switch.”
- Force a disconnection, for example by turning Wi-Fi off and on or by stopping the VPN service in your operating system’s network settings.
- Reload the IP lookup page and any open browser tab. With the kill switch working, pages should fail to load rather than show your real IP address.
Repeat the test with the kill switch off to see the difference. A test on one platform does not prove the same behavior on another, so run it on each device you plan to use.

Check for DNS leaks
While connected, run a DNS leak test from a reputable site. The DNS servers listed should belong to the VPN provider, not your internet service provider. A leak can expose your browsing hostnames even when the page content is encrypted.

- Protocol: WireGuard and OpenVPN can produce very different results. TechRadar notes that OpenVPN performance differs across providers.
- Baseline: the speed without the VPN. A 300 Mbps line and a 1 Gbps line will show different absolute drops.
- Route and distance: nearby servers usually give higher speeds and lower latency than distant ones.
- Test machine: the device and network used. A cloud computer and a laptop on home Wi-Fi are not comparable.
- Repetition: a single run is a snapshot. Security.org ran ten tests per VPN and averaged the results.
To measure your own result, run a speed test without the VPN, then connect to the same server you plan to use and repeat the test at different times of day. Compare the averages, not the best single run.
Compare the full cost of the plan
- Amount billed up front: a monthly equivalent shown on a promotion can be a multi-year payment. Check the total charged at checkout.
- Renewal price: the rate after the first term, which is often higher than the introductory rate.
- Billing period: monthly, annual or multi-year, and how much you save by committing.
- Device limits: how many devices can connect at once. One plan may cover a phone, laptop and tablet, while another allows fewer.
- Included extras: any add-ons, such as dedicated IP addresses, that are not part of the base plan.
- Refund terms: the window, conditions and whether a trial is included.
What a VPN can and cannot do
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server and changes the IP address that destination sites see. It moves trust from your internet provider to the VPN operator, which can see your traffic in principle, and it does not make you anonymous. It also does not protect you from malware, phishing or account compromise.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Tom’s Guide states: “It’s important to say at the beginning that Tom’s Guide cannot guarantee that any particular VPN isn’t collecting and storing your data.” That is the publication’s editorial position, not an auditor’s or regulator’s finding. Avoid treating any VPN as “100% safe” or “untraceable,” and treat a no-logs claim as something you verify, not something you assume.
Sources and how far they go
The Security.org guide is the most detailed published method in this group, but its picks are its own judgments. The Artifact Security result is one test round, summarized by a vendor. The TechRadar speed figures come from one publication’s setup. Use each source for what it measured, and check current prices, audit reports and terms directly with each provider before you choose.
