The best VPN for Thailand depends first on which country’s IP address you need. If you’re visiting Thailand and want a service available in your home region, connect to a VPN server outside Thailand. If you’re abroad and need a Thai IP, choose a provider with Thailand servers. For public Wi-Fi, a VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server, but it does not make you anonymous or protect against every online threat.
Choose the VPN endpoint for your goal
A VPN routes your connection through a server in a location you choose. Your apparent IP address then reflects that server’s location. That makes server location the first decision—not a universal ranking of providers.
- Traveling in Thailand and need a service tied to your home region: connect to a server in the country where that service is available. TechRadar’s Thailand guide makes this distinction for home-region streaming catalogs; access can change, and a VPN cannot guarantee a particular catalog will work.
- Outside Thailand and need a Thai IP: select a provider that offers a Thailand endpoint. Proton says its service has Thailand servers and lets users browse with a Thai IP; that is a provider claim, not independent performance testing.
- Using hotel, café, or airport Wi-Fi: a VPN can help protect the connection from local network snooping by encrypting traffic to the VPN server. It does not prevent phishing, malicious downloads, tracking by sites you log into, or all device-level risks.
VPNs to compare for Thailand
TechRadar’s Thailand-specific comparison, published January 13, 2026, covers NordVPN, Surfshark, Windscribe, Hide.me, IPVanish, and Proton VPN. It discusses obfuscation, privacy and no-logs evidence, speed testing, and streaming scenarios. Use it as a dated editorial comparison rather than a guarantee of current performance. The available evidence does not establish that any one service is best for every location, device, or platform.
| Provider | What the cited evidence establishes | What to verify before subscribing |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Included in TechRadar’s Thailand-specific editorial comparison dated January 13, 2026. | Current Thailand or home-region endpoints, relevant network-restriction features, privacy evidence, compatible devices, price and renewal terms, and access to your exact service. |
| Surfshark | Included in TechRadar’s Thailand-specific editorial comparison dated January 13, 2026. | Current endpoints, device coverage for your plan, privacy evidence, price and renewal terms, and access to your exact service. |
| Windscribe | Included in TechRadar’s Thailand-specific editorial comparison dated January 13, 2026. | Current endpoints, applicable plan limits, privacy evidence, price and renewal terms, and access to your exact service. |
| Hide.me | Included in TechRadar’s Thailand-specific editorial comparison dated January 13, 2026. | Current endpoints, device coverage, privacy evidence, price and renewal terms, and access to your exact service. |
| IPVanish | Included in TechRadar’s Thailand-specific editorial comparison dated January 13, 2026. | Current endpoints, device coverage, privacy evidence, price and renewal terms, and access to your exact service. |
| Proton VPN | Included in TechRadar’s comparison. Proton’s official Thailand page describes Thailand servers, a Thai IP, WireGuard, OpenVPN, alternate routing, Secure Core, encryption, and apps for major platforms. Those feature descriptions are vendor statements. | Confirm the endpoint and features are available on your intended plan and device; check current price, renewal terms, and whether your service works from that endpoint. |
TechRadar reports its own speed testing, but no numeric comparative benchmark is established here. Speeds vary with your connection, distance to the VPN server, server load, protocol, and other conditions. Do not treat a provider’s “fast” description as a measured result.

What to compare before choosing
Server location and availability
Check the provider’s current server list for the country you actually need. A provider’s general presence in Thailand is not evidence that every plan, protocol, or device can use a Thai endpoint. If you need a home-region IP while in Thailand, check for a server in that specific country instead.
Restrictions and alternate routing
Some networks block VPN connections or restrict access to particular sites. Obfuscation features, OpenVPN, or alternate-routing options may help in some circumstances, but they do not guarantee that a VPN connection or website will work. Proton describes OpenVPN and alternate routing for reaching sites blocked by an ISP; this is a provider’s feature description, not a promise of success on every network.

Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*

Privacy policy and verification
Read the provider’s privacy policy to understand what connection or account data it says it collects and retains. Separate that policy from independent verification: a provider’s no-logs statement is its own claim, while an audit is evidence only within the scope and date of that audit. TechRadar discusses privacy findings and reported audits in its review; check the cited review and the underlying audit materials for details rather than treating “no logs” as a blanket guarantee.
Devices, plans, and current terms
Confirm support for the operating systems and devices you will use, including whether you need an app or router configuration. Check the current plan’s device allowance, total price, renewal price, refund conditions, and endpoint availability on the provider’s own site before paying. These terms can change, and the cited comparison does not establish current prices or plan conditions.

Streaming and service access
Test the exact platform, account, country, and device combination you care about. Streaming services can change how they detect VPN traffic, and a provider’s server list does not establish durable access to a catalog. Do not choose on the assumption that a VPN will unblock everything.
What Thailand restriction data can—and cannot—tell you
The iMAP Thailand 2024 Internet Censorship Report by iMAP / Sinar Project and Thai Netizen Network records tested websites and categories of confirmed or likely blocking during its study period. Its measurements concern the examined domains, not every site or a live, exhaustive block list. The report explicitly says: “The findings are only applicable to the websites that were examined and do not fully reflect all instances of censorship that might have occurred during the testing period.” Treat the report as dated context, not proof that a particular site is blocked now or that a VPN will bypass a restriction.

These are dated report figures, not current measurements. They do not establish the legality of VPN use or determine what is safe for an individual to access or publish.
Privacy, anonymity, and legal limits
A VPN changes the network path and can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server, but you still have to trust the VPN provider. Websites may identify you through accounts, cookies, or other signals, and a VPN does not grant legal immunity. The sources cited here do not establish the current legal status of VPN use in Thailand or provide legal advice. Do not rely on a VPN as a shield from law enforcement or as a guarantee of anonymity.
