The best VPN for Tanzania depends first on where you need your internet traffic to appear to come from. If you are in Tanzania and want an overseas exit location, choose a provider you can install and connect to on your actual network. If you are abroad and need a Tanzanian IP address, Proton VPN says it has servers in Tanzania, but not on its Free plan. No cited comparison establishes that any VPN connects reliably on every Tanzanian carrier or ISP.
Which VPN works in Tanzania?
There are two different questions behind “VPN for Tanzania”: whether you can connect to a VPN while in Tanzania, and whether a VPN can give you a Tanzanian exit IP while you are elsewhere. A server in Tanzania helps with the second task; it does not prove that the service will connect successfully from a particular Tanzanian mobile or fixed network.
Comparitech’s Tanzania guide, updated September 2026, recommends NordVPN, Surfshark and ExpressVPN, among others, based on its own assessments. It names NordVPN its top pick and Surfshark its budget choice, but also says NordVPN has no servers in Tanzania. Those rankings are Comparitech’s, not a guarantee of availability or performance on your connection. Read Comparitech’s Tanzania VPN comparison.
Use the following shortlist as a starting point, then check the exit location and test the app on the network and device you actually use.

| Provider | What the cited sources establish | What to verify for your use |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Proton says it has servers in Tanzania for Tanzanian IP addresses, but excludes those servers from its Free plan. It describes encryption, a kill switch, a no-logs policy, apps for major platforms and a 30-day money-back guarantee. These are provider statements. Proton’s Tanzania server information. | For a Tanzanian exit IP, confirm the current paid plan includes that location. For use from Tanzania, test whether the app connects on your ISP or carrier; the server-location claim does not establish local connectivity. |
| NordVPN | Comparitech ranks it first in its September 2026 Tanzania guide but says it has no servers in Tanzania. NordVPN says its no-logs policy has undergone six independent reviews, most recently by Deloitte in 2025, and describes Double VPN and Onion Over VPN. Comparitech’s comparison; NordVPN’s no-logs information. | It cannot meet the Tanzanian-exit-IP requirement on the evidence cited here. Its ranking and audit history do not show that it will connect on every Tanzanian network. |
| Surfshark | Comparitech names it its budget choice. Surfshark lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2 and Dausos, and describes RAM-only servers, Deloitte no-logs assurance reports in 2023 and 2025, and a SecuRing infrastructure audit completed in December 2025. These are provider statements; Surfshark says the full Deloitte report is account-restricted. Surfshark Trust Center; Comparitech’s comparison. | Do not assume it is the cheapest: compare the current introductory price, renewal price and refund terms. Confirm whether its available exit locations meet your needs. |
| ExpressVPN | Comparitech includes it among its Tanzania recommendations. ExpressVPN describes AES-256 encryption, its Lightway protocol and its no-logs policy. These provider descriptions are not Tanzania-specific performance results. ExpressVPN Trust Center; Comparitech’s comparison. | Check current plans, availability and local connection behavior. Global protocol and privacy claims do not establish performance on your network. |
Comparitech also lists IPVanish, CyberGhost and PrivateVPN, but the cited information does not support a similarly detailed comparison of those services.
Can I use a VPN in Tanzania?
Tanzania’s Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) published a notice dated October 13, 2023, saying that individuals and companies whose undertakings make VPN use indispensable must declare the VPN and relevant information, including its IP address, by October 30, 2023. The notice says TCRA may take regulatory action against unauthorized use, including disabling access to such VPNs, and says facilitating access to prohibited content is an offence punishable on conviction. The TCRA page shows a revision date of July 28, 2026, while the attached notice itself is dated 2023. The notice’s wording is narrower than a blanket statement that all VPN use is illegal or unrestricted: it addresses users whose undertakings make VPN use indispensable and separately refers to prohibited content. The cited materials do not establish how the notice is currently interpreted in every situation. Check current TCRA guidance or obtain qualified local legal advice for your circumstances. Proton’s assertion that VPN use itself is legal is a provider’s characterization, not a substitute for regulator guidance.
