There isn’t one best VPN for every student. Choose based on what you need it for—privacy on Wi-Fi you don’t control, access while traveling, streaming, or a specific campus-network requirement—and compare the provider’s privacy practices, device support, campus compatibility, and the full cost after any student offer. A VPN routes traffic through a provider; it does not make you invisible or exempt you from school rules.

What should students look for in a VPN?

Start with the problem you want to solve, then assess the trade-offs. A VPN shifts some trust from the network you are using to the VPN provider: the campus network may see that you connected to a VPN, while the provider handles your VPN traffic. The service’s privacy practices and the limits of its protections matter more than a student label or a discount.

  • Privacy: Read the provider’s privacy policy and understand what it says about collecting, retaining, and sharing activity data. Do not assume that a VPN makes you anonymous.
  • Device support: Check that the service supports the devices and operating systems you actually use, and review which features are included in the plan you would buy.
  • Campus fit: A VPN may be detected or blocked, and campus rules still apply. If you need one for a specific academic or network task, check the school’s policy or ask its IT department.
  • Total cost: Compare the amount charged upfront, subscription length, renewal price, cancellation terms, refund period, and student eligibility—not just the advertised monthly equivalent.
  • Free-plan trade-offs: Find out how a free service is funded and what its limits are. A free VPN is not automatically a safer or better-value choice.

Which VPN services are worth comparing?

Security.org’s school VPN guide, updated August 24, 2026, names NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access, CyberGhost, and IPVanish among its picks. That list reflects Security.org’s selection criteria and testing, not a universal ranking. TechRadar also publishes school Wi-Fi comparisons based on its own tests. Neither publication’s findings should be treated as a guarantee of your speed, streaming access, or ability to connect on a particular campus network.

For student offers, the clearest details in the available provider material are on Proton and Surfshark’s student pages. Proton’s current student page describes eligibility and verification but does not establish one universal price for every student. Surfshark directs students to Student Beans; check its current offer and checkout terms. NordVPN’s pricing page links to student and employee discount information, but that link alone does not confirm a specific discount amount or eligibility. Compare any of these with other services using the same criteria rather than assuming one is best for all students.

How do the student offers work?

Proton VPN

Proton’s student offer page lists eligibility for university, college, sixth-form, and high-school students, as well as apprentices, with verification through Student Beans/Beans iD. It says a subscription renews automatically at the regular price for the same duration after the initial term unless you cancel or change it. Check the checkout page for the amount due, selected term, renewal price, and cancellation terms before subscribing.

A separate Proton article dated 2024 describes VPN Plus at 50% off for 12 months at $2.49 per month in the US, UK, France, and Germany. That is dated offer information, not a current-price guarantee. Confirm availability and the actual total in your country at checkout. Read Proton’s offer article.

Should you use a VPN on university Wi-Fi?

Possibly, if it meets a legitimate need and your school permits it. A VPN can protect traffic between your device and the VPN service from some forms of observation on the local network, but it does not prevent every kind of monitoring or make prohibited activity acceptable. Surfshark says a university may detect VPN use; its explanation that the university cannot see what you do online through the VPN is not a guarantee against policy enforcement or every form of monitoring.

Student priorities also vary. A 2020 study interviewed 32 US university students and surveyed 349 US university students. Its authors found that students were mainly concerned with access to content and that privacy concerns were often secondary. Those results describe the study participants, not all students. The authors also discuss the trust trade-off of using free commercial VPNs that might collect online activity to reach geographically restricted services. Read the study, Understanding How and Why University Students Use Virtual Private Networks.

How to compare the real cost before subscribing

  1. Confirm eligibility and country. Check the provider’s current student-verification route and whether the offer applies where you live.
  2. Inspect the checkout total. Record what you will pay now, the duration covered, and any taxes or other charges shown.
  3. Check renewal terms. Find the regular renewal price and billing duration. A low introductory monthly equivalent does not mean the same price will continue.
  4. Read cancellation and refund terms. Note the relevant deadline and procedure before you start the subscription.
  5. Match the plan to your devices and needs. Confirm supported devices and included features; do not pay for a feature you do not need or assume every plan includes the same protections.
  6. Check campus rules and connectivity. If the university restricts VPN use, or the network blocks a service, a discount does not solve that issue.

Are VPN speed and streaming claims dependable?

They are conditional, not promises. Speed can vary with the service, server, location, device, network, and test method. TechRadar’s school Wi-Fi results are that publication’s measurements under its stated testing conditions; Security.org’s recommendations likewise reflect its own evaluation. Treat these as comparison evidence, not a prediction of your results on campus.

Streaming availability and campus firewall behavior can change. No provider’s offer or editorial ranking guarantees that a particular service will work with your school network or unlock a specific streaming catalog. Check current terms and, where possible, use the provider’s refund policy to evaluate whether the service works for your needs.
