There is no verified best VPN app for every Samsung Galaxy Watch. An Android VPN installed on your phone does not automatically protect the watch. For watch traffic, the practical choices are a VPN app that is explicitly available for your exact Wear OS watch, or a VPN-enabled router for the watch’s Wi-Fi connection. LTE use needs a separate direct-watch solution.

Why a Galaxy Watch VPN is different from a phone VPN

Galaxy Watch4 and newer models use Wear OS; Galaxy Watch3 and earlier use Tizen. Samsung says Wear OS Galaxy Watches use the unified Samsung and Google platform and have access to Google Play. Google cautions that not every Android phone app is available for Wear OS, so an Android VPN listing alone does not establish watch compatibility (Samsung’s Wear OS compatibility guidance; Google Play’s Wear OS app instructions).

The Wear OS generations include Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic, Watch5 and Watch5 Pro, Watch6 and Watch6 Classic, Watch7, Watch8 and Watch8 Classic, and Galaxy Watch Ultra. LTE and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi editions can take different network paths. Samsung says Wear OS Galaxy Watches require an Android phone for initial setup; Watch4 and Watch5 cannot be set up as standalone watches, and Wear OS Galaxy Watches are not compatible with iOS (Samsung).

How the watch connects What may protect its traffic What not to assume
Bluetooth to paired phone Test whether the watch’s relevant traffic actually travels through the phone’s VPN. A phone VPN is not proof that all watch traffic uses its tunnel.
Watch Wi-Fi at home or elsewhere A VPN configured on that Wi-Fi network’s router, or a compatible VPN running on the watch. A phone VPN does not protect the watch’s independent Wi-Fi connection.
Phone hotspot Only a documented and tested sharing method. Do not assume the phone’s VPN passes through a standard Android hotspot.
Watch LTE/cellular A direct VPN client on the watch, if one is available and works on that model and software. A phone or home-router VPN does not cover the watch’s independent cellular connection.

A VPN can change the apparent IP address and route network traffic through another server. It does not, by itself, change GPS coordinates, physical location, carrier registration, or emergency-service behavior.

How to check for a real Wear OS VPN app

  1. On the watch, open Google Play Store from the app list.
  2. Search for the provider’s exact name and open its listing.
  3. Install only if the listing offers the app for the watch itself. When using Google Play on the web or a phone, confirm the Galaxy Watch appears as a compatible device.
  4. After installation, check that the app can sign in and establish a connection on the watch. Confirm the watch or app reports an active tunnel.
  5. Test separately with Bluetooth connected and disconnected, and with Wi-Fi or LTE as applicable. A successful phone connection does not verify the watch connection.

Google says Wear OS apps can be installed from the watch’s Play Store or selected as a compatible device in Google Play, and that an Android app unavailable on the watch is probably not Wear OS-compatible (Google Play guidance). Sideloading an APK is not a reliable shortcut: processor architecture, permissions, background behavior, screen layout, battery use, and provider support may all be wrong. Do not sideload unless the VPN provider documents support for that exact watch environment.

Will a VPN on the paired Samsung phone protect the watch?

Not automatically. A phone VPN creates a tunnel for traffic on the phone where it is connected. NordVPN’s Android setup documentation, for example, describes connecting its app on that Android device; it does not establish that every paired-watch connection is routed through the phone (NordVPN Android setup).

The result depends on whether the watch is relaying traffic over Bluetooth, using its own Wi-Fi, connecting through a hotspot, or using LTE. Verify the actual path instead of treating the paired phone and watch as one VPN-protected device.

  1. Connect the phone to its VPN and note the watch’s current connection mode.
  2. Test the watch while Bluetooth is connected to the phone.
  3. Disconnect Bluetooth and connect the watch directly to Wi-Fi or cellular, then repeat the test with an internet-using watch app.
  4. Compare behavior with the VPN on and off. If the watch itself has no VPN indicator or active profile, do not conclude that it is protected solely because the phone shows a connection.

Why a phone hotspot is not a dependable workaround

Samsung phones can share internet through Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, with options including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, or Ethernet; the available options can vary by phone and carrier (Samsung hotspot and tethering guidance). But hotspot internet sharing does not prove that client traffic passes through the phone’s VPN. Surfshark says default Android and iOS systems do not share a phone VPN connection through a normal mobile hotspot (Surfshark support).

For reliable coverage, use a compatible VPN-enabled router for the watch’s Wi-Fi or a directly supported Wear OS app. A provider-specific or Windows-based sharing method may be an option, but confirm its support for the exact setup rather than assuming ordinary Android hotspot sharing works.

What LTE-watch owners need to know

An LTE Galaxy Watch can use its own cellular connection away from the phone. Samsung describes LTE models as supporting functions such as calls, messages, music, navigation, SmartThings control, and Samsung Wallet when away from the phone, with availability varying by country, carrier, network, and product (Samsung Newsroom). Google likewise distinguishes cellular and Wi-Fi connections and requires a compatible cellular watch and carrier service for cellular use (Wear OS cellular guidance).

When the watch is sending data over its own LTE connection, neither a VPN on the phone nor one on the home router covers that traffic. Unless a compatible, active VPN runs directly on the watch, do not describe independent LTE traffic as VPN-protected.

Which VPN should you choose?

The providers below are candidates for phone or router use, not verified direct Galaxy Watch VPN recommendations. The official material available for these products establishes Android or supported-device information, but does not confirm a dedicated Wear OS app for the watch. Check Google Play on your watch before buying for direct watch coverage.

Provider What the cited information establishes Galaxy Watch-specific limitation Official information
NordVPN Android app and setup information; potential phone or router use. Direct Wear OS app is not verified here. A phone connection alone does not establish watch coverage. Android app; mobile VPN; Android setup
Surfshark Android app with manual setup options using WireGuard, OpenVPN, or IKEv2; its support page addresses hotspot sharing. Direct Wear OS app is not verified here; Surfshark says default Android and iOS hotspot sharing does not share the phone VPN. Android app; hotspot support
ExpressVPN Supported-device information lists Android and routers. That listing does not establish direct Galaxy Watch or Wear OS app support. supported devices; official site
Proton VPN Android app and a free signup option; Proton describes paid plans as supporting up to 10 simultaneous devices. Direct Wear OS app is not verified here. A free phone plan does not prove watch coverage. Android app; plans

If your goal is phone protection rather than direct watch coverage, compare the current provider plan terms, renewal price, device limits, router compatibility, and refund conditions before subscribing. Promotional prices change and can depend on country, billing term, taxes, and extras; the cited comparisons are not dependable evergreen rates. ExpressVPN’s official site advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time users, subject to its current terms (ExpressVPN). No listed provider should be called the best LTE-watch VPN without a verified working Wear OS client.

When a VPN helps—and when it may not

  • Potentially useful: routing watch Wi-Fi through a VPN-enabled router, protecting traffic on an untrusted network, or accessing a private network through a compatible watch client.
  • Not a location-spoofing tool: a VPN changes apparent IP location, not the watch’s GPS position or carrier location.
  • Possible trade-offs: battery use, reconnects during Bluetooth/Wi-Fi/LTE transitions, and disruption to local-device discovery, casting, smart-home services, or companion-app communication.
  • Not a complete security solution: VPN encryption does not prevent phishing, malicious apps, weak passwords, or compromised accounts.

If the watch uses a trusted home network and its ordinary functions do not require separate VPN routing, a VPN purchase solely for the watch may add little value. Samsung’s phone settings also include Private DNS options, but encrypted DNS is not a VPN: it can address DNS privacy, not route all watch traffic through a VPN tunnel (Samsung network settings).

Router setup for watch Wi-Fi

A router VPN is often the most straightforward workaround when no direct watch app is available and the watch connects to that router’s Wi-Fi. It covers devices using the configured router connection, but not the watch when it moves to LTE, another Wi-Fi network, or a phone connection that bypasses the router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check that the router supports the VPN provider or a protocol and configuration the provider supplies.
  2. Follow that provider’s router instructions to enter credentials or import a configuration and select a server. Exact menus vary by router model and firmware.
  3. Connect the Galaxy Watch to the router’s Wi-Fi.
  4. Test the watch connection separately; do not infer watch coverage from the router or phone status alone.
  5. If local services stop working, disconnect the router VPN or use provider-supported local-network access or split tunneling if available.

Troubleshooting common failures

The app installs on the phone but not the watch

The app may be Android-phone-only. Search from the watch’s Play Store and check compatible devices rather than trying to infer compatibility from the phone listing (Google Play compatibility guidance).

The phone VPN works, but the watch appears uncovered

The watch may be using its own Wi-Fi or LTE, or its Bluetooth-relayed traffic may not use the phone tunnel. Test the watch connection modes independently; use a router VPN for the relevant Wi-Fi or a direct watch client for independent LTE.

Hotspot clients do not appear to use the VPN

Normal Android hotspot sharing may not pass traffic through the phone VPN. Surfshark documents that limitation for default Android and iOS systems; use a supported router or other provider-documented method instead (Surfshark support).

The watch loses internet after enabling a VPN

Disconnect the VPN and confirm ordinary connectivity first. Then restart the watch and phone, restore Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and try another server or protocol if the client supports it. A kill switch, local-network blocking, DNS or IPv6 handling, battery restrictions, or an unsupported watch client can cause trouble. Remove a direct watch app that remains unreliable and use router protection for home Wi-Fi instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local devices or watch-phone features stop working

A VPN can interfere with local printers, smart-home devices, casting, phone-watch discovery, and other local connections. Use local-network access or split tunneling only if the provider supports it for the device in question; do not assume a phone feature exists in a Wear OS app.

Battery life drops or connections keep changing

A persistent tunnel, LTE use, and frequent reconnections can increase battery demand. Test screen-off operation and movement between Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and LTE on your own watch; there is no universal battery figure established for these combinations.

Payments, emergency, carrier, or health features behave differently

A VPN is not a substitute for carrier service, GPS, emergency routing, payment security, or health-service availability. Samsung notes that LTE features vary by country, carrier, network, and product (Samsung Newsroom).
