No list can promise that exactly five VPNs work with Netflix at all times. The 2026 test results that circulate disagree with each other, Netflix actively detects VPN and proxy connections, and results depend on which Netflix library you want, which device you use, and when the test was run. The useful question is which provider worked for a specific region and device in a dated test, and what to do when Netflix blocks your connection anyway.
Why “only five still work” is not a fixed count
The “five” figure comes from a dated test headline and reflects one reviewer’s methodology. It is not a Netflix statistic. Netflix does not publish a count of working VPNs, and it does not endorse any provider. Three variables change the outcome:
- Region. Each country has its own Netflix catalogue, and a provider that unlocks one library may fail on another.
- Device. A VPN app on a phone, a laptop browser, and a smart TV can behave differently, and some TVs and consoles cannot run a VPN app at all.
- Time. Netflix can detect and block VPN connections, so a result that held in one test can stop holding later.
What Netflix’s own guidance says
Netflix’s help material is more stable than any provider ranking. Two points matter most:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Netflix’s Help Center states: “VPN apps or services can make your device or network look like it’s connecting from somewhere other than your physical location and can cause this error or other issues.”
- The same page states: “VPNs aren’t supported for watching Live events on Netflix or if you’re on an ad-supported experience.”
Netflix’s E121 help page adds that “VPNs aren’t supported if you’re on an ad-supported experience.” In short, a VPN can trigger errors even when the provider works elsewhere, and some Netflix experiences are excluded from VPN use regardless of provider.

What the 2026 test results actually show
Three recent publications test VPNs against Netflix libraries. Their results should be read separately, because they cover different providers, regions and dates.
| Source and date | Scope of test | Netflix libraries tested | Reported results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top10VPN guide, updated August 26, 2026 | 59 VPNs tested | Multiple libraries; the full list is not stated in the summary we reviewed | Reports provider-level differences across libraries; per-provider figures not stated here |
| TechRadar VPN comparison, 2026 | Five VPNs | USA, UK, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Japan | Library results for some of the same services differ from Top10VPN’s findings |
| Gizmodo, October 6, 2026 | More than 40 VPNs | US, Canada, Japan; top three providers tested across 15 libraries | NordVPN accessed all 15 libraries; ExpressVPN accessed 13; the article names a five-provider shortlist |
The Gizmodo figures come from the publication’s summary of its October 2026 test, not from an independent re-run, so treat them as that reviewer’s result for that date. Because TechRadar and Top10VPN disagree on some results, no single source should be treated as settled. A snapshot of this kind tells you what worked in one test, not what will work on your connection next month.

How to compare providers for Netflix
Judge a provider on criteria that match your viewing, not on a generic “works with Netflix” label:
- Tested libraries. Check whether the test covered the Netflix country whose catalogue you want to watch.
- Playback speed and quality. Look for measured streaming speed and picture quality in the same test, not just a pass or fail.
- Device support. Confirm that the app runs on the device you actually watch on, including phones, laptops and TVs.
- Usability. Note how easily you can switch servers and whether the app stays connected.
- Price and renewal terms. Compare the renewal price, not only the first-term price, before you subscribe.
Fixing “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”
This message means Netflix has identified your connection as a VPN or proxy. Work through these steps in order:

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Turn off the VPN. Check the system tray (Windows) or menu bar (macOS) for a VPN icon, and check your antivirus app, because some bundle a VPN that stays on in the background.
- Check the client country. On a device connected to the same network, open fast.com, select “Show more info,” and compare the Client country with your actual location.
- Check your plan. If your account is on an ad-supported experience, VPNs are not supported on it, so the error may persist while any VPN is connected.
- Reset device or network settings. If the VPN is off and the displayed location matches yours but the error remains, reset the device or network settings and try again.
- Contact your ISP. If the problem continues, contact your internet provider and give them the client country and IP address shown on fast.com.
The E121 “There’s a problem” message
Netflix associates this error with an ad-supported experience that may be connected through a VPN or proxy, which is unsupported on that plan. Switching VPN servers or buying a different VPN is not Netflix’s first-line answer for this message. Disconnect the VPN or proxy on that connection first, then retry.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Smart DNS is a provider-specific setup used on some televisions and consoles that cannot run a VPN app. It changes the location Netflix sees for certain requests, but it is not a VPN and does not provide VPN privacy or encryption. Do not choose it on the assumption that it offers the same protection.

When you choose a provider for a TV, confirm three things with the provider before you pay: that the app or setup method works on your exact device, that the library you want was included in a recent test, and that you can cancel or change plans if the connection stops working.
