If you need a Maltese IP address while abroad, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and Private Internet Access (PIA) each advertise access to Malta endpoints. There is no Malta-specific speed or streaming comparison in the available evidence, so none can honestly be called the fastest or best-performing VPN for Malta. Choose by your intended use, device support, and the privacy evidence you are comfortable relying on—and check current terms before subscribing.
What is the best VPN for Malta?
The right choice depends on why you need a VPN. For a Maltese IP while traveling, all three services below advertise a Malta option. For privacy and transparency claims, Proton VPN and PIA describe open-source apps, while Proton also says its apps have undergone independent audits. For router support, ExpressVPN lists router compatibility in its device information. These are provider statements, not independent Malta performance findings.
| Provider | Malta-specific evidence | May suit readers who… |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Its Malta page advertises Malta servers, a no-logs policy, open-source apps, and independent app audits. The cited page does not establish independent Malta speed results. | Want to weigh published privacy and transparency claims, including its stated app audits. |
| ExpressVPN | Its Malta page describes choosing Malta and states its position on activity and connection logs. Its device information lists router support. No Malta-specific independent performance result is established. | Need a Malta endpoint and are considering router or broad-device use. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Its Malta page advertises a Malta IP and says its no-logs policy has been audited and tested in court; it describes its apps as open source. These are provider claims, not independent Malta speed results. | Want a Maltese IP while abroad and value the provider’s stated audit and court history. |
The pages establish that each provider advertises Malta access, but they do not independently verify that the server hardware is physically located in Malta. If physical location matters to you, ask the provider whether its Malta endpoint is physical or virtual and check the answer against its current documentation. No current price or refund term is established here, so compare those directly on the provider’s checkout and terms pages before buying.
How to get a Maltese IP address
- Choose a VPN whose current server list includes Malta, such as one of the providers above.
- Install its official app on your device and sign in to your account.
- Open the server or location list, select Malta, and connect. Exact menu labels may vary by app and version.
- Check your apparent IP location using a reputable IP lookup service. If it does not show Malta, disconnect and reconnect, then contact the provider if the mismatch persists.
A VPN changes the apparent public IP location and encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN service. It does not guarantee that a bank, streaming platform, or other website will accept the connection. Services can use additional checks or block VPN endpoints, and access remains subject to the service’s own terms.

Can you access Maltese websites or services while traveling?
A Malta endpoint may help when a website uses IP location as one factor in deciding what content or services to show. It is not a guarantee: a destination may require a local account, payment method, phone number, or other verification, or may block known VPN addresses. Check the destination service’s rules and the VPN provider’s current terms; a VPN does not authorize violating copyright or service restrictions.
If your goal is simply secure browsing on hotel or airport Wi-Fi, a VPN can encrypt the connection between your device and the VPN provider without needing a Maltese endpoint. Choose a nearby location if you do not need a Malta IP; the reviewed sources do not provide comparative Malta latency or speed results.

What Malta’s internet-access report does—and does not—say
The Malta Communications Authority’s Open Internet Regulation | 2024 MCA Report, published in 2025, states: “The MCA notes that there are no concerns regarding open internet access in Malta.” That is a regulator’s finding about open internet access, not a promise that every private network or online service will allow every connection.

ExpressVPN’s Malta guidance says schools and private companies may restrict gaming, streaming, high-bandwidth apps, or external email on their networks. That is provider guidance about network restrictions, separate from the MCA’s report on Malta’s open internet access.

The same MCA report gives local market context: as at the end of March 2025, GO held 47.2% and Melita 46.1% of Malta’s fixed broadband client base; Epic held 6.5% and Vanilla Telecoms 0.1%. The report says over 99% of fixed internet-service clients were with GO, Melita, and Epic. Those figures describe operator market share; they do not show a need for a VPN or predict how a VPN will perform on any provider’s network.
Consumer VPNs are not the same as MITA’s government VPN
The Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) describes its VPN as secure remote access to systems hosted at MITA over a personal internet connection. Its support guidance is for eligible government employees and suppliers, and specifies FortiClient, account credentials, and multi-factor authentication. It is not a general consumer VPN for getting a Maltese IP or protecting ordinary browsing.

How to compare VPNs for Malta
- Confirm the endpoint: Check that Malta is in the provider’s current location list. If physical rather than virtual location is important, seek an explicit answer from the provider; the cited marketing pages do not independently verify server location.
- Read privacy claims in context: A no-logs statement is the provider’s policy claim. Check the relevant audit’s scope and date in primary documentation rather than treating the word “audited” as proof of every privacy claim.
- Match device support to your setup: An app may be enough for a phone or laptop. Router support can matter if you want VPN coverage for devices that cannot run an app, but setup and compatibility depend on the router and provider.
- Use evidence that matches your question: TechRadar says its general VPN reviews assess features, privacy and security, performance, streaming access, support, and reliability, and that it tests each reviewed VPN twice yearly. That is its stated general methodology, not a Malta-specific test result.
- Check terms and total cost: Verify the current price, renewal terms, refund conditions, and the destination service’s rules before subscribing. No current provider offer terms were established in the cited material.
Most readers can use a VPN app without buying hardware. A VPN-compatible travel router is optional for network-level coverage; check the exact router model’s compatibility with the VPN provider before purchasing, since compatibility for a particular model is not established here.
