There is not enough published evidence here to say that exactly five VPNs passed a shared set of tests. The available 2026 comparisons use their own criteria and test setups, so “only five passed all tests” is not a verified result. To choose a VPN for your Mac, compare macOS compatibility, privacy features, app usability, performance evidence, streaming claims, and plan limits—and check how each claim was established.
Why the “only five passed all tests” claim needs qualification
A count of five passing VPNs is meaningful only if the providers, tests, and pass criteria are disclosed. The available comparison descriptions do not establish a common five-provider cohort or shared test suite. Macworld describes practical checks including device compatibility, supported devices, geo-restrictions, and ease of use; RTINGS, TechRadar, and Tom’s Guide describe their own review approaches. Their rankings cannot be treated as a single universal pass list.
That distinction matters because “passed” might refer to different things: an app installing on a particular macOS version, a reviewer’s speed test, a privacy feature, or access to a streaming service. Without the criteria and results for each provider, the title’s exact count cannot be verified.

What to compare when choosing a Mac VPN
macOS and hardware compatibility
Check the provider’s current minimum macOS version and whether its app supports your Mac. Compatibility claims are version-specific: RTINGS’ 2026 list identifies macOS 13 Ventura or later for one reviewed app, not a universal requirement for every VPN. Confirm the current requirement with the provider before subscribing, especially if your Mac cannot run a recent version of macOS.

Privacy and security features
Look for clear information about the provider’s privacy practices and any independent verification. A provider’s marketing description is not, by itself, independent evidence. Also confirm that the feature you need—such as a kill switch—is available in the Mac app and included in your chosen plan.
Mac app usability
Evaluate the actual macOS app: setup, connection controls, and whether it exposes the features you intend to use. A feature listed for a provider may not be present on every platform or subscription tier. Macworld, for example, describes a kill switch and Secure Core among paid Proton VPN capabilities; do not assume those are included in Proton VPN’s free plan.

Performance evidence
Speed depends on the Mac, macOS release, network, server region, protocol, and test method. Tom’s Guide reports additional real-world testing on a November 2023 MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip running macOS Tahoe. That is useful context for understanding its results, but it does not predict the speed you will get on a different Mac or network. Prefer comparisons that identify their test environment and method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Streaming access can vary by service, catalog, region, and date. Macworld includes geo-restrictions among its practical comparison criteria, but that does not establish permanent access to any particular catalog. Treat claims as bounded to the services and regions actually tested, rather than as a guarantee that a VPN will always unlock a specific show or library.

Plan features and device limits
Compare the terms of the exact plan you would buy, including which features it includes and any device limits. RTINGS notes that Proton VPN torrenting is limited to paid plans, while Macworld describes some Proton VPN security features as paid-plan capabilities. These examples show why a provider-wide feature list can be misleading if it does not distinguish free and paid tiers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess VPN comparison claims
Different reviewers’ results answer different questions. Macworld says its 2026 comparison is based on hands-on testing and cites compatibility, supported devices, geo-restrictions, and ease of use. RTINGS describes research and test development in its 2026 Mac list. TechRadar says it tests services and retests at least twice per year. None of those descriptions establishes that the reviewer used the same cohort or pass criteria implied by “only five passed all tests.”

- Secure Remote Work for Two : Includes two travel routers, so a colleague or family member can also connect remotely.
- Work from Anywhere Securely : Connect to your home network with a VPN travel router designed for remote professionals.

- Unrestricted Access : Bypass geo-blocks and region locks, ensuring access to work tools, emails, and streaming services anywhere.
Before relying on a ranking, check whether it identifies the services compared, the test date, device and macOS version, and the meaning of a pass. For speed claims, look for the protocol, network, server location, and method. For privacy claims, distinguish provider statements from independent verification. For streaming claims, check which service and region were tested and when.
