For Ireland-specific results published in September 2026, Proton VPN ranked first in Comparitech’s use-case comparison, followed by NordVPN and Surfshark. That ranking reflects a particular blend of Ireland speed retention, latency, streaming compatibility, effective monthly price, server fleet size and country coverage—not a universal verdict. The right choice depends on whether you need everyday privacy, an Irish IP while abroad, or access to a particular streaming service.
Which VPNs ranked highest for Ireland in 2026?
Comparitech updated its Ireland comparison on September 4, 2026, and says it tested in September. Its scores below are specific to that Ireland use case; they are not each provider’s overall rating.
| Provider | Ireland comparison score | Selected reported results |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | 9.0/10 | 93.00% Ireland speed retention (12 measurements); 20,533 servers and 148 countries reported in the benchmark; tested effective monthly price: US$2.99 |
| NordVPN | 8.5/10 | 90.95% Ireland speed retention (15 measurements); 78.80% on Comparitech’s “most-blocked services” measure; tested effective monthly price: US$3.49 |
| Surfshark | 8.2/10 | 96.88% Ireland speed retention (15 measurements); 75.90% on Comparitech’s “most-blocked services” measure; tested effective monthly price: US$2.49 |
| IPVanish | 7.9/10 | Other figures not stated in the cited summary (Comparitech, September 2026) |
| PureVPN | 7.6/10 | Other figures not stated in the cited summary (Comparitech, September 2026) |
| ExpressVPN | 7.5/10 | Other figures not stated in the cited summary (Comparitech, September 2026) |
| CyberGhost | 7.3/10 | Other figures not stated in the cited summary (Comparitech, September 2026) |
Comparitech’s Ireland comparison combines six inputs, so the top score is best read as a benchmark result rather than a guarantee of the best experience for every person. The speed-retention, blocked-services and price figures are the source’s dated comparison inputs, not current Irish checkout prices or guaranteed offers. Provider network figures can also change.

Everyday privacy and public Wi-Fi
A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN service, which can reduce what a local network operator or internet provider can see about your traffic. It shifts trust to the VPN operator; it does not make you anonymous. Signed-in accounts, cookies and browser fingerprinting can still identify or track you.

An Irish IP address while travelling
If you need websites to see an Irish IP address while you are outside Ireland, check that the provider offers Irish servers and that your device’s app can connect to them. ExpressVPN’s Ireland page instructs users to download its app, sign in and connect to a server in Ireland; this is the provider’s own guidance, not an independent test of availability or performance. See ExpressVPN’s Ireland VPN page.
Streaming a particular service
Look for tests of the exact service and region you intend to use, and note when they were performed. Comparitech’s compatibility measure is a broad comparison input, not a promise that a specific library, account or device will work. Streaming platforms can detect and block VPN endpoints, and results can change.

How to interpret speed, latency and streaming results
Comparitech reports Ireland speed retention of 93.00% for Proton VPN across 12 measurements, 90.95% for NordVPN across 15 and 96.88% for Surfshark across 15. Those are results from its stated test, not predicted speeds for your connection. Your actual speed and latency depend on your base connection, route, chosen server, server load, protocol and test conditions. A provider’s global server count alone does not establish that its Irish connection will be faster.

They should not be read as the share of all streaming services that will work, or as a guarantee for any named platform. The source summary does not provide a service-by-service result here.

Compare the real subscription cost, not just the monthly headline
Comparitech’s September 2026 benchmark lists tested effective monthly prices of US$2.99 for Proton VPN, US$3.49 for NordVPN and US$2.49 for Surfshark. These figures describe the comparison’s price inputs, not current Irish checkout offers. Before paying, check the currency, total amount charged upfront, subscription term, introductory-price duration and renewal amount. A low effective monthly rate on a long plan can require a much larger initial payment than one month’s price suggests.
Check privacy evidence and practical fit
Read the provider’s logging policy and check what any independent audit actually covered and when it was conducted. The sources cited for this comparison do not independently verify the full audit record of every listed provider. NordVPN says Artifact Security gave it the only Platinum rating in a 2026 comparison of five providers under the AMTSO testing standard; this is NordVPN’s account of a non-Ireland-specific test, not confirmation of the Ireland benchmark. Its claim is described in NordVPN’s August 10, 2026 post.

Before subscribing, also confirm the app supports your operating systems, the number of simultaneous connections fits your household, and customer support and refund terms meet your needs. ExpressVPN’s Ireland page, accessed in October 2026, says its plan tiers support 10, 12 or 14 simultaneous connections respectively and describes a 30-day new-customer refund guarantee. These are provider-stated terms, so check the current offer and conditions on the provider’s Ireland page.
Is using a VPN legal in Ireland?
The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment’s Digital Services Act page includes VPNs among examples of “mere conduit” services and explains the EU framework. That classification is not a blanket legal ruling about every VPN use. A secondary Irish comparison and ExpressVPN state that VPN use is legal in Ireland, but the official page cited here does not directly settle a broad legality question. A VPN does not make unlawful activity lawful. Consult an appropriate legal source for advice about a specific situation. The government’s DSA information is at Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Digital Services Act.
