The right choice depends on whether you prioritize privacy evidence, a simple iOS experience, streaming while traveling, a free plan, or the total cost after renewal. Current comparison reviews favor different services for different reasons, so treat their rankings as informed editorial judgments—not a universal test result.

What matters when comparing VPN apps for iOS?
Privacy evidence, not just privacy claims
Look for evidence that supports the provider’s privacy promises, and distinguish that evidence from marketing language. A VPN changes how network traffic is routed, but it does not make every activity anonymous: websites can still identify you through account sign-ins, cookies, device information, or other signals. Avoid treating a privacy label or a review ranking as proof that a service eliminates tracking.

For everyday use, consider whether the iPhone and iPad apps make it clear when the VPN is connected, how to choose a server, and what happens when the network changes. Apple supports VPN connections through apps as well as manual configuration. A provider’s app may also expose features that depend on the protocol in use, so check the provider’s iOS documentation if a particular feature is important.

Streaming and travel needs
Streaming availability and connection performance can vary by service, country, network, and time. Reviewers’ results are useful for narrowing the field, but they do not promise that a particular streaming service will work from your destination. If access while traveling is the reason you want a VPN, verify the provider’s current service terms and test the app before relying on it for a trip.
Devices and subscription cost
Compare the current simultaneous-connection allowance with the number of devices you plan to cover, then compare the full subscription term rather than only the first advertised payment. A discounted introductory period can be followed by a higher renewal price; Macworld specifically flags confusing pricing, long commitments, and renewal increases for NordVPN. Free access and plan limits
Proton VPN is the free-tier option identified in the reviewed comparisons. Do not assume that its free plan includes every paid feature: Proton says some advanced options require a paid plan. Check the current plan details for the limits that matter to you before deciding whether free access is sufficient.

How VPN setup works on an iPhone or iPad
Use a provider’s App Store app
- Install the VPN provider’s iOS app from the App Store and sign in or create an account as required by that provider.
- Follow the app’s connection prompts. iOS asks permission to add VPN configurations; approve that request only for the service you intend to use.
- Connect in the app, then use its status indicator to check whether the VPN is active. App labels and available settings vary by provider and app version.
Apple’s security guidance lists IKEv2/IPsec and SSL-VPN using an appropriate App Store client among supported VPN methods. For most people choosing a consumer service, the provider’s app is the straightforward route; manual setup is an alternative when the provider documents it and you specifically need it.

Manual configuration is not the same thing as subscribing to a VPN service. A separate client supplies a way to connect, but you still need a provider’s server details and account or configuration credentials. NordVPN documents a manual OpenVPN route through OpenVPN Connect; Proton documents manual WireGuard setup through the official WireGuard client. Follow the provider’s current instructions for the exact server and settings rather than entering guessed values.

Understand Always On VPN
Apple describes Always On VPN as a managed-device capability, not the usual consumer-app switch. It applies to devices supervised through Apple Configurator, Apple School Manager, or Apple Business Manager and managed through a device-management service. An organization can configure it to tunnel all IP traffic to that organization. Apple says it “eliminates the need for users to turn on VPN to enable protection when connecting to mobile and Wi-Fi networks.” This enterprise setup should not be confused with downloading an ordinary VPN app on a personal iPhone.
How iCloud Private Relay fits into the decision
iCloud Private Relay and a VPN are not interchangeable services. Private Relay is an Apple privacy feature for supported browsing activity, while a VPN app establishes a VPN connection for traffic covered by its configuration. If you need a provider-selected VPN connection or coverage beyond the browsing activity Private Relay protects, evaluate a VPN app on its own merits. Do not assume that enabling either service makes all internet activity anonymous.
Before you subscribe
- Confirm that the provider supports your iOS version and the features you need.
- Check the current device allowance, plan length, introductory price, renewal price, and cancellation terms at checkout.
- Verify whether the features you want require a particular protocol or a paid plan.
- If you need a manual connection, confirm that the provider supplies current configuration instructions and credentials for the client you plan to use.
- For travel or streaming, treat published rankings as a starting point, not a guarantee for your destination, network, or service.
