There is no single best iPad VPN for everyone. TechRadar names NordVPN its overall pick, while its comparison highlights Surfshark for speed and streaming and Proton VPN for privacy; Macworld and Tom’s Guide make their own editorial choices. Use those rankings as starting points, then choose based on the provider’s privacy practices, the iPad app, your travel or streaming needs, and the subscription terms available in your country.

Apple warns that an active VPN provider may be able to see, intercept, and modify your online activity. A VPN can protect traffic on a network, but it means entrusting that traffic to the VPN provider. Apple explains the privacy implications of VPNs; read the provider’s policy before installing its app.

Which iPad VPN should you choose?

The right choice depends on what you need and which claims you can verify. These providers appear in recent editorial comparisons, but their labels are reviewers’ judgments—not a guarantee that a service is best for every iPad user.

How to compare VPNs for an iPad

Privacy and provider trust

A VPN changes who handles your network traffic; it does not make that traffic invisible to everyone. Apple says an active VPN provider may be able to see, intercept, and modify online activity. Review the provider’s privacy policy and logging disclosures, and look for clear information about audits, including their scope and date. Do not assume that a privacy label or a feature name alone establishes how a provider handles data.

The iPad app and its features

Check that the provider offers an iPad-compatible app and that the particular feature you care about is available in that app. A provider’s desktop features or marketing page do not establish that the same controls exist on iPadOS. Review the app’s setup flow and settings before subscribing where possible.

Streaming and travel

Reviews can report whether a VPN accessed a service or location under particular test conditions; that is not a promise of future access. Streaming services can change their VPN detection and access rules, and results can vary by country, server, account, and date. Check the streaming service’s applicable terms and the VPN provider’s current claims. Do not subscribe on the assumption that a particular catalog will always be available.

Speed and device coverage

Performance results depend on the reviewer’s network, device, location, server, and test date. Use a published speed result only when its method and conditions are clear, and do not assume it predicts your iPad’s connection. Compare simultaneous connection limits against your household’s needs, then confirm the current limit for the specific plan: provider terms and review snapshots can differ or change.

Price, renewal, and trials

Compare the full billing period and renewal price, not just a displayed introductory rate. Check whether the offer is available in your region, what happens at renewal, and the applicable refund or trial conditions. Prices and promotions in comparison pages can age quickly; verify them on the provider’s current plan page before purchase.

Free plans

“Free” does not describe a single set of trade-offs. Check the plan’s data allowance, locations, speed or performance limits, included features, and data-handling terms. TechRadar’s comparison reports a 10 GB limit for its highlighted free choice, but that is an editorial snapshot rather than a universal free-VPN limit; confirm the current provider plan before relying on the figure. A free plan can be useful for limited needs, but assess its restrictions and privacy terms just as carefully as a paid service.

How to install and set up a VPN on iPad

For most users, the simplest route is the VPN provider’s App Store app. Apple also supports manual configuration. Its documented path is Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN > Add VPN Configuration. The options available depend on the VPN service and configuration details it provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose a provider and review its privacy policy. Apple recommends reviewing the provider’s privacy practices because an active VPN may have access to online activity.
  2. Install the provider’s iPad app from the App Store. Follow the app’s prompts to add its VPN configuration and approve the iPadOS request.
  3. Connect from the app. Select the location or profile you need, if the app offers those choices, and connect. The VPN indicator and the app’s status can help confirm the connection is active.
  4. For manual setup, open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN > Add VPN Configuration. Select a supported configuration type and enter the server and account details supplied by your VPN provider or network administrator.

Apple’s platform security guide lists IKEv2/IPsec and L2TP/IPsec configurations, as well as SSL-VPN through an appropriate App Store client. It also describes VPN On Demand and per-app VPN for managed deployments. These management options are not the same as a standard consumer app’s connect button. Apple says Always On VPN applies to iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS devices managed through an MDM service and supervised using Apple Configurator, Apple School Manager, or Apple Business Manager. See Apple Support’s VPN security guide, published January 28, 2026.

Does iCloud Private Relay replace a VPN?

Not for every use. Macworld describes iCloud Private Relay as focused on Safari and notes that it does not provide a virtual-location choice for streaming. If your goal is to route traffic beyond Safari or choose a VPN location, compare the capabilities of a VPN app with what Private Relay offers. They should not be treated as interchangeable services.

Will a VPN slow down an iPad?

It can, but the amount depends on factors such as your connection, the VPN server and its distance, and the provider’s network. A review’s speed measurement is meaningful only in the context of its stated device, network, location, and method; it cannot guarantee the speed you will see. If performance matters, use a plan with terms that suit you and test the service on your own iPad and network during any applicable refund period.

What to verify before subscribing

  • Read the current privacy policy and logging disclosures, and look for dated, scoped audit information.
  • Confirm that the provider’s iPad app includes the features you need.
  • Check the plan’s device limit, full billing term, renewal price, and refund or trial terms for your region.
  • For streaming, treat review results as time-bound observations and check the streaming service’s rules.
  • For a free plan, verify its current data, location, feature, and privacy restrictions directly with the provider.
