For smart-home devices that cannot install a VPN app, the practical choice is usually a compatible router configured as a VPN client or a computer hotspot protected by a VPN. There is no universal best VPN for every IoT setup: the right fit depends on your router model and firmware, the provider’s supported configuration, and which devices you want routed through the tunnel. A VPN can add privacy to network traffic, but it does not fix weak passwords, vulnerable firmware, or other device-security problems.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do for IoT devices
Many smart TVs, cameras, appliances, and other connected devices do not support consumer VPN apps. Instead, a VPN client on a compatible router can send traffic from devices connected to that router through a remote VPN server. TP-Link’s router guide describes this client mode and distinguishes it from running a VPN server for remote access.
This mainly changes the route and privacy characteristics of network traffic leaving the home network. It does not patch a device, strengthen its password, or prevent an attacker from exploiting a firmware flaw. ExpressVPN makes the same distinction on its IoT page; NIST’s September 10, 2024 publication on consumer-grade router security also explains the router’s role in protecting home-network data and connected IoT devices (NISTIR 8425A).
How to choose a VPN setup for your IoT devices
- Check the exact router model and firmware. Confirm it offers VPN client mode—not merely VPN server functionality—and consult its model-specific documentation. Generic “VPN support” does not prove that a particular router can connect to a particular provider.
- Match the router’s protocol and configuration to the provider. Verify that the provider supplies setup details the router accepts, including the required protocol and configuration files or credentials.
- Decide which devices should use the tunnel. Check whether your setup can route selected devices or a separate network as needed, rather than assuming every router offers the same controls.
- Consider performance and failure behavior. A VPN can affect router performance. Look for information relevant to the exact hardware and connection, and understand what happens if the VPN disconnects; do not assume a service or router will handle interruptions in a particular way.
- Check smart-home functions. Cloud services, local control, discovery, or communication between devices may behave differently depending on how the network is routed. Confirm the functions you rely on after setup.
- Weigh setup help against hardware flexibility. Provider instructions or dedicated router software may simplify configuration, while an existing router’s firmware and model still determine what it can do. Top10VPN’s router guide discusses compatibility and setup considerations; its stated tests used a Linksys WRT3200ACM running DD-WRT and OpenWrt, which is a specific test setup, not proof that other models work the same way.
The available evidence does not establish a universal provider winner or comparable, model-by-model throughput results. Choose based on compatibility and the needs of your home rather than a blanket ranking.

Three ways to route IoT traffic through a VPN
1. Configure your existing router as a VPN client
This is often the most direct option if the router explicitly supports client mode and accepts a configuration from your chosen VPN provider. TP-Link says supported routers can connect the router and its network devices to a remote VPN server, but points users to individual model documentation. Check the exact model and firmware before changing settings; client mode is different from using the router as a VPN server for remote access.
2. Add or replace hardware with a compatible router
If your current router lacks VPN client mode, a VPN-capable replacement or additional router may work. Before buying, verify that the particular model and firmware support client connections and the provider’s protocol. A product description that says “VPN support” by itself is not enough to establish compatibility, as the Top10VPN router guide also cautions.

3. Connect devices to a VPN-secured computer hotspot
A computer hotspot can be an alternative for a small or temporary setup when the computer is connected to a VPN. ExpressVPN describes this approach for IoT devices and says its kill switch pauses internet traffic during a VPN interruption. Those are vendor statements, not independent comparative findings; confirm that your operating system, hotspot configuration, and VPN behave as required before relying on it.

Organizations may need centralized authentication and network separation rather than a consumer smart-home setup. OpenVPN describes self-hosted Access Server and cloud-delivered CloudConnexa for IoT use, including certificate authentication and the ability to separate IoT networks. These are advanced or organizational options, not automatically the right choice for a household; review the provider’s current documentation and requirements at OpenVPN’s IoT page.

Will a VPN slow down smart security cameras?
It can affect performance, but the sources here do not provide independent camera-specific speed or latency measurements that establish how much. The result depends on the router, VPN configuration, internet connection, and service path. If camera responsiveness or cloud uploads matter, check for relevant evidence for your exact setup and test the functions you depend on after configuration. Treat a provider’s performance claims as vendor claims unless they are supported by independent measurements.
Secure the IoT network beyond the VPN
A VPN is one network-routing and privacy measure, not a substitute for securing devices and the router itself. NIST’s 2024 router-security publication discusses the router’s importance to the integrity and availability of home-network data and notes that smart-home IoT devices rely on home routers. Keep device and router firmware maintained, use strong unique passwords, and use the router’s security controls and network separation where available. Do not treat a VPN tunnel as protection against an insecure device or a compromised local network.
