NordVPN is the strongest starting point for PC gaming in the 2026 comparisons reviewed here, but no VPN can guarantee lower ping or work flawlessly with every game. PC Gamer measured an average 12.73 ms ping with NordVPN in its UK Counter-Strike 2 Deathmatch test, versus 12.58 ms without a VPN. That small difference applied to one setup—not every player, ISP, game, or server. Choose a nearby VPN endpoint, test it against your normal connection, and keep the VPN off if it makes your route worse or interferes with a game.
Which VPN should you choose for PC gaming?
NordVPN is the clearest overall pick in PC Gamer’s 2026 gaming VPN review. Its local Counter-Strike 2 result was close to the no-VPN baseline, and NordVPN recommends its NordLynx protocol for speed-dependent activities. That makes it a reasonable first option to test, not a promise of improved latency.
Other services may be a better fit depending on your priorities. Surfshark offers split tunneling and says it supports unlimited simultaneous connections; Proton VPN documents WireGuard and OpenVPN support, open-source apps, and independent app audits. Published results and provider features should be weighed separately: a protocol or security feature does not establish how a particular game will perform on your connection.
What the published gaming test actually shows
PC Gamer tested Counter-Strike 2 Deathmatch in the UK against a same-country game server over multiple runs. Its average local ping was 12.58 ms with no VPN, 12.73 ms with NordVPN, and 13.54 ms with Surfshark. These narrow measurements illustrate that a nearby VPN route can add little measured ping in one setting; they do not predict your result. Your ISP, VPN endpoint, game-server route, congestion, and time of day can all change the outcome. Read PC Gamer’s 2026 PC gaming VPN comparison.

The same review reported that Valorant failed to load during its Surfshark testing. This is a reviewer’s result in that test, not proof of permanent or universal incompatibility. It is a useful reminder to check whether matchmaking, anti-cheat, and game launch work as well as the ping test.
Compare the leading options by your priorities
| Service | Evidence relevant to PC gaming | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | PC Gamer named it its overall 2026 gaming VPN pick and measured 12.73 ms average ping in its UK CS2 test, against 12.58 ms without a VPN. NordVPN recommends NordLynx for gaming and other speed-dependent use. | A good first service to test if low-latency routing is your priority. The result is specific to PC Gamer’s setup; it does not establish that NordVPN is fastest for every player. NordVPN’s protocol guidance. |
| Surfshark | PC Gamer measured 13.54 ms average ping in its UK CS2 test and reported a Valorant loading failure. Surfshark says its service supports Windows, split tunneling, unlimited simultaneous connections, and router installation. | Consider it if split tunneling or connecting many devices matters, but test the games you play. Router compatibility depends on the specific router model. Surfshark’s gaming VPN information. |
| Proton VPN | Proton documents WireGuard and OpenVPN, open-source apps, a kill switch, and independent app audits. PC Gamer reported somewhat higher CS2 ping and jitter in its own experience. | Relevant if documented protocol and app-security features matter to you; the available gaming result does not support a universal performance ranking. Proton’s claim that VPN Accelerator can raise VPN speed by over 400% is a provider claim, not a gaming benchmark. Proton VPN’s protocol information. |
PC Gamer also includes Windscribe and Mullvad in its candidates, while Security.org lists PIA, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost among gaming VPN options. The information available here is not enough to make a detailed, current head-to-head comparison of those services. Security.org identifies latency, DDoS concerns, speed, and server locations as selection criteria; its suggested 20–40 ms of added ping for competitive gaming is that publisher’s recommendation, not a universal threshold. How to test a VPN for your games
- Record your normal performance. With the VPN disconnected, play the game you care about and note its displayed ping and any instability across several sessions. Use the actual game and matchmaking region you normally play.
- Connect to a nearby VPN endpoint. Start with a server geographically close to you or the game server. A distant endpoint can add unnecessary routing distance.
- Repeat the same sessions. Keep the game region and other conditions as similar as practical. Compare ping and stability with the VPN on and off; one unusually good or bad match is not enough to judge a route.
- Check the whole game flow. Confirm the game launches, matchmaking succeeds, and anti-cheat does not block or flag the connection. If the VPN causes a problem, try split tunneling if the provider supports it, routing the game outside the VPN, or disconnecting the VPN.
- Keep the setup that works. Test another nearby endpoint or protocol only if needed, then compare again. If the VPN consistently worsens latency or stability, use your normal connection for that game.
What matters more than headline download speed?
Ping and jitter
Ping is the time it takes data to travel between your PC and a game server; jitter is variation in that delay. Both can affect how responsive and consistent a game feels. A VPN adds an intermediary route, so a faster advertised download speed does not establish that the game will respond faster.

Compatibility and split tunneling
Some games or anti-cheat systems may not work as expected over a VPN. Split tunneling can let you send selected apps outside the VPN while keeping other traffic protected, where the provider and app support that feature. Verify the specific game rather than assuming that a provider’s general compatibility claim applies.

Protocol and server location
Protocol options affect how a VPN connection is established, but a protocol label alone is not a gaming performance test. NordVPN recommends NordLynx for speed-dependent activities; Surfshark and Proton document WireGuard support. Test nearby endpoints because location and routing can matter as much as the protocol.
Privacy, security, and practical fit
Compare the provider’s supported PC operating systems, device limits, kill-switch behavior, leak protections, logging disclosures, and audit information. Provider statements and independent evidence are not interchangeable. Also check the full subscription term and refund conditions directly before buying; prices and plan details can change.

Can a gaming VPN protect you from DDoS attacks?
A VPN can mask your home IP address from parties that would otherwise see it, which may reduce exposure to attacks aimed at that address. It does not guarantee immunity from every denial-of-service attack: an attacker may target a game service or another part of the connection instead. Treat IP masking as a limited privacy benefit, not complete DDoS protection.
Should you install a VPN on your router?
Router installation can route multiple devices through a VPN at the network level, but support depends on the router model and provider setup. Surfshark says its service can be installed on a Wi-Fi router; confirm that your exact router is supported before attempting it. A router VPN is an optional convenience, not a method shown here to lower gaming ping.

How to interpret broader VPN speed claims
NordVPN reported on 10 August 2026 that Artifact Security tested NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, ProtonVPN, and Surfshark using AMTSO testing guidance for speed, leaks, accessibility, feature reliability, and connection time. NordVPN’s account gives average Windows latency figures of 227.5 ms for ExpressVPN, 231.4 ms for ProtonVPN, and 238.8 ms for NordVPN, and says ProtonVPN’s best route was 183 ms. These figures are relayed by NordVPN; the underlying Artifact report is not available in the cited account. The test routes also differ from PC Gamer’s game-specific CS2 measurements, so the figures should not be combined into one ranking. Read NordVPN’s account of the test.
Quick Recap
When a VPN is not the right fix
- If your no-VPN ping is already stable and the VPN adds delay, leave it disconnected while gaming.
- If the game fails to launch or matchmaking breaks, test split tunneling or a different nearby endpoint; do not assume the VPN is required to play.
- If you are changing regions to reach different matchmaking, check the game’s rules and terms first. A VPN’s ability to route traffic through another region does not mean that use is permitted.
- If your main issue is unstable home Wi-Fi or a poor route from your ISP, a VPN may not solve the underlying problem and can add another routing step.
