No VPN can be named as the one that works in Egypt right now. The sources reviewed for this guide, current to 7 October 2026, do not establish independently measured connection success for any provider. Provider pages describe features and server locations, while comparison pages disagree on the details that matter most. The right choice therefore depends on what you need the VPN to do and on whether it connects from your own internet provider and device.
Which VPN works in Egypt right now?
The sources do not support a ranking. Egypt-focused comparison pages disagree about whether major services are working, whether VPN protocols are widely blocked, and which providers run physical servers in Egypt. This guide reports no hands-on connection tests, so none of the providers below is labelled as tested.
The table separates what each provider says about itself from what the sources add.

What an “Egypt server” can mean
A server labelled “Egypt” can be one of two things, and the difference affects the IP address you receive and how the connection behaves.
- Physical server in Egypt. The machine is in Egypt, so the server location and the IP address point to the same place.
- Virtual location. The provider shows an Egyptian location, but the server sits elsewhere. You receive an Egyptian IP address that is not hosted in Egypt.
Do not treat the two as equivalent, and do not assume every Egyptian IP address comes from a server in Egypt. If the difference matters for your use, ask the provider directly which type a location is before you subscribe.

Proton VPN’s official Egypt page describes encryption, a kill switch and a no-logs policy. These are the provider’s own statements. Read its current privacy and audit documents before treating the no-logs policy as verified, since the table shows no independent audit for it.

How do you get an Egyptian IP address from abroad?
Use a provider that offers an Egypt location and confirm its type first. ExpressVPN’s official page describes a virtual Cairo location that gives you an Egyptian IP address using infrastructure in a nearby country. This suits a traveler or expatriate who needs an Egyptian address while outside Egypt. An Egyptian address does not guarantee that a particular website or service will accept it. Each service sets its own rules, and this guide did not test any specific service.
Getting through a restrictive connection
Choose a provider whose app offers an obfuscation or stealth setting, which disguises VPN traffic so it is harder to recognize as a VPN. The table shows which providers report one and who reports it. Enable the setting manually if the app does not switch it on, and test each network with and without it. A stealth setting can make a connection work where the standard one fails. The test steps below show how to check whether it does on your network.

Is using a VPN legal in Egypt?
The sources do not support a simple yes or no. Egypt restricts certain online content and activities, and a VPN is one way to reach content that is blocked. The sources reviewed do not establish that every VPN use is illegal, and they do not establish that VPN use is risk-free. Whether a particular use creates legal exposure depends on what is accessed, the purpose, and the person’s circumstances.

What the cited sources establish
- Law No. 175 of 2018 is Egypt’s cybercrime law. Its Arabic text is published by Egypt’s Supreme Council for Cybersecurity. WIPO Lex records the law as issued and published in August 2018 and effective from 15 August 2018.
- Freedom on the Net 2024, published by Freedom House, says the law permits website blocking on broadly defined national-security or economic grounds. It reports that 562 websites had been blocked as of June 2024, including about 132 news websites. That is a June 2024 count, not a 2026 figure.
- The same Freedom House report summarizes the law’s provisions on penalties for visiting banned websites, and says authorities continued blocking independent news sites during its coverage period.
- A 2018 report by OONI and the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) analyzed network measurements showing interference with a range of websites, including VPN-related sites. It documents historical blocking, not a current list of blocked services.
- The Library of Congress’s 2018 account says Article 2 of the law requires telecommunications companies to retain users’ data for 180 days, to help authorities identify users and related metadata and IP addresses. This describes a requirement on telecom companies, not the logging practices of any VPN provider.
- OpenVPN’s Support Center lists Egypt among regions where its business products have known legal or technical issues, and says users are responsible for ensuring their use is legal where they are. The notice concerns OpenVPN’s business products. It does not mean every consumer VPN is unavailable in Egypt.
What this does not settle
For a person-specific question, such as employment, a dispute, or a plan involving a particular service, get current advice from an Egyptian lawyer. The sources here date from 2018 to 2024, and enforcement can change.

What a VPN does and does not change
- Your internet provider can still see that your device connects to a VPN server and roughly how much data moves, even though it cannot read the content.
- The 180-day retention requirement described above applies to telecom companies, not VPN providers. A VPN does not remove your provider’s own connection records.
- The VPN provider sees the traffic it carries. What it keeps is set by its privacy policy. A no-logs statement is the provider’s claim until an independent audit confirms it.
- A VPN does not make unlawful activity lawful. It also does not remove device-level risks such as malware, compromised accounts, or identifiers tied to your phone or login.
How to test a VPN on your own connection
Feature lists and location labels do not show whether a service connects from your network. Run these checks before you rely on a service, and record each result with its date.
- Read the provider’s current setup instructions for Egypt, and check whether its app has a protocol, obfuscation or stealth setting. Setting names differ between apps, so use the labels in your version of the app.
- Note your device, operating system, app version, and each network you use: home fixed-line internet, each mobile SIM, and public Wi-Fi.
- On each network, connect with the default protocol first, then with the obfuscation or stealth setting enabled. Note which setting connects.
- For each working setting, connect to the server location you need and to one nearby alternative.
- Treat the test as passed only if the connection establishes, the sites you need load, and the session stays stable through about thirty minutes of normal use. One success on one network is a data point, not proof of broad availability.
- Repeat the test after app updates and whenever you change networks, because blocking can change without notice.
If a VPN won’t connect
- Update the app to the provider’s latest version and reconnect.
- Switch on the obfuscation or stealth setting, or choose a different protocol, then reconnect.
- Try a different server location, and remember the location type shown in the table above.
- Switch networks. If the VPN works on mobile data but not on your fixed-line connection, the restriction is on that network, not in the app.
- If nothing connects on any network, do not rely on the service for that connection. Contact the provider’s support with your internet provider, device, app version and the exact error message.
