There is no evidence-based “best VPN for DJI drones” ranking for 2026. The available comparisons cover general VPN services, not testing with DJI Fly, DJI Pilot 2, or specific phone-and-controller setups. A VPN may route an internet-connected device’s traffic through a VPN service, but it does not improve drone range, make a flight legal, or replace DJI’s Local Data Mode. If your goal is to limit a flight app’s internet access, start with DJI’s own privacy controls; consider a VPN only for the separate network-privacy role it can provide on a compatible device.
Do you need a VPN to fly a DJI drone?
No. The cited DJI materials do not recommend a VPN as a flight requirement or identify one as necessary for DJI Fly or DJI Pilot 2. A VPN is a network service on a phone, tablet, or other compatible device; it is not a drone-safety feature. The available evidence also does not establish that using one improves flight performance, range, or DJI app compatibility.
A VPN can route traffic from a device through a VPN service, but whether that setup protects the traffic you care about depends on the service, device, app behavior, and configuration. No provider-specific encryption implementation or DJI-controller behavior was verified for this comparison. Treat a VPN as a possible layer for general network privacy, not as proof that flight-app data is private or that every DJI feature will continue to work.
Does DJI Fly work with a VPN?
Compatibility is not established for particular VPN apps, DJI aircraft, controllers, or phone combinations. DJI’s changing DJI Fly compatibility information covers supported aircraft and mobile devices and minimum operating-system versions; it does not discuss VPN applications. A phone may support both DJI Fly and a VPN app, but that alone does not prove the combination works reliably or preserves every DJI service.

- Check the VPN provider’s current documentation for your operating system and device. Do not assume a controller can install a consumer VPN app unless its documentation says so.
- If you use a VPN, verify the DJI functions you need before relying on the setup for a flight. The available evidence does not confirm how VPN routing affects any specific DJI feature.
VPN or DJI Local Data Mode: which should you use?
They address different things. A VPN routes network traffic through a VPN service. DJI Local Data Mode is a DJI app setting that disconnects the flight app from the internet, which can disable cloud-connected features. If your aim is to stop the flight app from connecting to the internet, Local Data Mode is the more direct control described by DJI; a VPN does not make the app offline.
Turn on Local Data Mode in DJI Fly
- Open DJI Fly and go to Settings → Notification and Privacy → Local Data Mode.
- Enable Local Data Mode. DJI says this disconnects the flight app from the internet and can disable features such as connecting to DJI’s cloud platform.
- For fully offline use, DJI also says to turn off the device’s Wi-Fi and cellular connections. This may limit access to online features and current information.
DJI’s User Guide for Consumer Drone Privacy Controls says users can change privacy authorizations in app settings. DJI says activation requires an email address, password, and drone serial number; flight logs, images, and videos are optional and are not collected by default. The guide also says DJI Fly uses an approximate location check at activation to load local maps and geofencing zones. DJI describes applying a random offset within a 5–10 km radius to help prevent identification of the operator’s actual location, and says the data is temporary and not stored on DJI servers. These are DJI’s published descriptions, not independently verified findings.

DJI Pilot 2 has separate network modes
For supported enterprise workflows, DJI Pilot 2 distinguishes Standard Mode, Restricted Network Mode, and Local Data Mode. DJI says Restricted Network Mode closes most data services while retaining maps, network RTK, and custom livestream functions. Its enterprise guidance also describes offline map and firmware workflows, including importing map data and transferring files by SD card, and offline GEO Zone unlocking for enterprise operators. These are Pilot 2 capabilities; do not assume consumer DJI Fly offers the same modes or workflows. See DJI’s enterprise privacy and network-mode guidance for product-specific details.

What to look for if you still want a VPN
No provider in the available comparisons is established as the best choice for DJI use. The following criteria can help compare general VPN services, but they are not evidence of DJI flight-app performance:

- Support for your device: Confirm the provider offers an app for the phone or tablet you use, and verify any restrictions that apply to your operating system or controller.
- Privacy documentation: Read the provider’s current privacy policy and look for independent reviews or audits of the specific claims that matter to you. A general VPN comparison is not a substitute for checking the provider’s own terms.
- Connection controls: Compare available protocols and whether the app offers a kill switch. Understand what happens if the VPN disconnects and how that could affect internet-dependent app functions.
- Stability and support: Consider whether the service has useful troubleshooting guidance and support for your device. No DJI-specific stability testing is established here.
- Current terms and cost: Check the price at checkout, renewal price, refund terms, and service availability in your country. VPN promotions and plan prices change; a deal page or comparison may not reflect the terms available when you subscribe.
Recent general VPN coverage from TechRadar’s VPN comparison discusses broad selection criteria, while Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 VPN deals coverage illustrates that promotions and plan prices vary. Neither establishes a DJI-specific winner. Verify provider terms directly before buying.
A VPN does not make a flight legal or safe
A VPN does not change Remote ID obligations, registration requirements, airspace restrictions, or the pilot’s responsibility to fly safely. DJI’s US Remote ID FAQ says a network connection is not required for Remote ID to work, although connecting can speed acquisition of the remote controller’s location. DJI also describes setup conditions involving firmware, controller or phone location, the app being in the foreground, and FAA registration where applicable. These details are US-focused; check current FAA rules and the requirements for your aircraft and use. DJI notes that recreational operation of an aircraft at or below 0.55 pounds (less than 250 grams) may be exempt from registration and Remote ID when it is purely recreational. Do not treat that as a blanket exemption for other uses or aircraft. See DJI’s US Remote ID FAQ and the applicable FAA requirements.
Rank #4

Do not rely solely on DJI’s map or geofence display to decide whether a flight is permitted. DJI Fly’s terms describe Flight Environment Data as informational and direct operators to official aviation, government, and aeronautical sources. The terms also say offline users do not receive the latest Flight Environment Data DJI may be able to provide. A VPN cannot substitute for checking current official restrictions, obtaining required authorizations, or following local rules. Read the DJI Fly terms and consult the relevant official sources for your location.
Bottom line on choosing a VPN for a DJI drone
Choose a VPN only if you have a general network-privacy reason and can verify support for the device you use. There is no substantiated DJI-specific provider ranking, and the available comparisons do not demonstrate improved range, safer flight, legal compliance, or compatibility with a particular DJI setup. For limiting DJI Fly’s internet access, use DJI’s Local Data Mode and understand the offline tradeoffs; for flight permissions and Remote ID, check current official requirements.
