The best VPN for China in 2026 is Astrill for the strongest reported mainland-China reliability, while ExpressVPN is the easier mainstream alternative and Surfshark is a conditional value pick. No VPN is guaranteed to work continuously: install and test your primary VPN before arrival, then carry international roaming, a travel eSIM, or another independent fallback.

VPN performance in mainland China changes with the city, carrier, access network, device, protocol, server IP, and timing. The 2026 testing record is also inconsistent: Top10VPN favors Astrill after long-running Shanghai testing, while TechRadar’s 2026 comparison ranked Surfshark first and reported successful tests for NordVPN and ExpressVPN. NordVPN’s own support documentation separately warns that users may be unable to connect from China.

Key takeaways

  • Astrill is the strongest reliability candidate because Top10VPN reports that it was the most consistent provider in ten years of testing from a Shanghai server.
  • ExpressVPN is the best easier mainstream alternative, while Surfshark is a value option whose China results conflict across independent testing.
  • NordVPN offers obfuscated servers and NordWhisper, but NordVPN’s own support page says connections from China may fail.
  • Install, authenticate, and test the VPN on every device before entering mainland China; downloading or recovering an account may be difficult after arrival.
  • A roaming plan or travel eSIM can provide an independent backup, but routing, data limits, compatibility, and hotspot support vary.

Which is the best VPN for China in 2026?

Astrill is the best VPN for China in 2026 if reliability behind the Great Firewall matters more than price. Astrill is not a guaranteed solution, but it has the strongest China-specific testing record in the supplied research. Astrill’s StealthVPN and OpenWeb protocols are designed for restrictive networks, although Astrill is more expensive and less polished than mainstream consumer VPNs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ExpressVPN is the better starting point for a beginner who values a polished app and simple setup. Surfshark can be attractive for families and budget-conscious travelers, but its China performance is conditional because the 2026 testing sources disagree. NordVPN has useful censorship-oriented features but should not be treated as a safe China-specific choice without testing: NordVPN’s own support article warns that connection from China may be unavailable.

Provider Best for China evidence Stealth or restricted-network features Setup and price position Main drawback Confidence
Astrill Reliability-focused travelers and frequent business trips Top10VPN reports the strongest long-term consistency after testing from Shanghai StealthVPN and OpenWeb Less polished; expensive High cost and no guarantee of availability Higher
ExpressVPN Beginners who prioritize a mainstream, polished experience TechRadar’s 2026 tests accessed all tested websites and streaming services Censorship-focused behavior is reported in testing, but results vary Simple mainstream option; current price not established in the dossier Conflicting real-world reports; not always fastest or easiest to connect Medium
Surfshark Budget travelers, families, and multi-device users TechRadar ranked it first and reported access to ten tested apps and streaming services; Top10VPN was more negative Use the provider’s currently available restricted-network options Value-oriented; unlimited simultaneous connections reported in comparison coverage Unstable or unreliable reports in China Conditional
NordVPN Existing users who want a broad security bundle Some comparison testing succeeded, but NordVPN says China connections may fail Obfuscated servers and NordWhisper Two-year Basic promotion displayed at $3.49/month equivalent and $94.23 upfront for the first 27 months on August 16, 2026; monthly Basic displayed at $14.99 First-party warning creates high uncertainty Uncertain
Windscribe Light use or an emergency free option Top10VPN identifies it as a useful free option but less effective than Astrill Not a primary recommendation for sustained restrictive-network use Free tier with a 10 GB monthly allowance Data cap and lower reported effectiveness Emergency/free only

These confidence labels describe the strength and consistency of the supplied evidence, not a promise about your particular hotel Wi-Fi, Chinese mobile carrier, city, phone, laptop, or travel date. “Works in China” is a temporary network-performance claim, not a permanent product specification.

Why do VPN rankings for China disagree?

VPN rankings disagree because China testing is highly dependent on conditions that ordinary global VPN reviews often do not control consistently. The meaningful variables include the mainland test location, carrier or Wi-Fi network, test date, device, protocol, server location, number of connection attempts, and the websites or apps tested.

Top10VPN’s March 9, 2026 update says Astrill was the most consistent provider after ten years of testing from a Shanghai server. TechRadar’s 2026 comparison instead ranked Surfshark first and reported successful access for Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN in its test rounds. Those results are not necessarily mutually exclusive: a provider can succeed during one test window and fail after server IPs or traffic patterns change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The conflict is precisely why a responsible recommendation should use a primary VPN plus an independent backup. A global VPN can be excellent for speed, privacy, or streaming elsewhere while performing poorly behind the Great Firewall. A comparison also should not treat a provider’s feature list as proof of current mainland-China connectivity.

What is the Great Firewall?

China’s Great Firewall is a collection of filtering, blocking, throttling, and interference systems that affect many foreign websites, apps, news services, social networks, and communications platforms. It is not simply one permanent public blocklist. Documented techniques include DNS interference, IP blocking, domain filtering, deep-packet inspection, connection resets, and periodic campaigns against circumvention tools. The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission’s censorship report provides background on censorship practices and VPN-related enforcement.

Commonly affected services can include Google services, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, X/Twitter, WhatsApp, Telegram, many foreign news websites, some Google-dependent apps and cloud services, and some AI services. Availability changes over time, and a VPN does not promise access to every service.

Mainland China should not be treated as interchangeable with Hong Kong or Macau. Network filtering, service availability, and practical connectivity conditions can differ, so mainland-China recommendations should not automatically be applied to either territory.

How does a VPN attempt to bypass the Great Firewall?

A VPN encrypts traffic between the device and a VPN server outside mainland China, then sends the traffic onward from that server. Encryption helps prevent ordinary observers on the local network from reading the contents of the connection. However, ordinary VPN traffic can have recognizable protocol characteristics and can itself be blocked.

Obfuscation is not the same as encryption. Encryption protects traffic contents; obfuscation attempts to make VPN packets look less recognizably like VPN traffic. NordVPN describes obfuscated servers as changing the appearance of VPN packets so restrictive networks have more difficulty identifying them as VPN traffic. Obfuscation can reduce speed, and obfuscation does not make VPN use invisible or guarantee that a network operator cannot identify or block the connection.

NordVPN describes NordWhisper as a protocol intended for networks where standard VPN connections are blocked. NordWhisper and obfuscated servers demonstrate why protocol flexibility matters, but their existence does not prove that a provider will work on a particular mainland network.

Why do VPNs fail in China?

VPNs fail in China for several different reasons, and a failed connection does not always mean that the provider is completely blocked.

  • Blocked server IP: the Great Firewall or another service may have identified and blocked the VPN server’s address.
  • Detected protocol fingerprint: the network may recognize the connection as VPN traffic and interfere with it.
  • Blocked app infrastructure: the VPN app may be unable to reach login, account, support, update, or configuration servers.
  • Late installation: the traveler may not be able to download, pay for, authenticate, or update the VPN after entering mainland China.
  • Network-specific blocking: a VPN may work on hotel Wi-Fi but fail on a Chinese mobile carrier, or work on mobile data but fail on public Wi-Fi.
  • Temporary campaigns: major political events, holidays, conferences, or security campaigns can produce temporary additional blocking.
  • Local network restrictions: corporate, university, hotel, and public Wi-Fi networks may impose their own restrictions.
  • Device and network configuration: DNS problems, IPv6 behavior, captive portals, firewalls, and DNS filters can prevent a tunnel from starting.
  • Exit-IP blocking: the VPN can connect successfully while a particular website rejects the VPN’s exit IP, especially for streaming.
  • Free-plan limitations: data caps, congestion, fewer locations, or missing protocol options can make free plans unsuitable for sustained use.

How should you prepare a VPN before entering mainland China?

Prepare before departure because downloading an app or recovering an account may be difficult after arrival. Use this checklist for each device you intend to use.

  1. Choose and purchase the service before entering mainland China. For a short trip, compare the cost of a monthly plan with the cost of a backup roaming or eSIM plan rather than automatically choosing a multi-year subscription.
  2. Install the app on every intended device: iPhone or iPad, Android phone or tablet, Windows laptop, and macOS laptop as applicable.
  3. Sign in before departure and confirm that the account, password, subscription, and any required verification method work.
  4. Download offline installers or configuration files if the provider makes them available and if the files are appropriate for the device.
  5. Save support information offline. Keep the provider’s support email, help pages, and troubleshooting instructions in a document that does not depend on the VPN.
  6. Test more than one protocol if the provider supports multiple connection methods. Do not assume that a protocol available on one operating system is available on every device.
  7. Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data before departure. The test does not reproduce every mainland network, but it confirms that the app and account work.
  8. Install the VPN on a backup device if practical, and keep the backup device charged and updated.
  9. Download offline essentials: maps, translation packs, hotel details, boarding passes, reservations, emergency contacts, and important documents.
  10. Arrange a second connectivity method such as international roaming, a travel eSIM, or another independently obtained service.

Do not rely on a password-reset email, payment page, app update, or customer-support chat being reachable after arrival. Keep account recovery codes and essential contact details available offline, while protecting those details from unauthorized access.

How do you connect to a VPN after arriving in China?

Use this provider-neutral workflow because VPN app labels and menus change by operating system and app version.

NordVPN Standard, 1 Year, 10 Devices, Best VPN, Next-Gen Antivirus, Digital Code
  • Protects the whole household. Secure your entire home network on up to 10 devices simultaneously with one subscription. Works with Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, and web browsers.
  • Offers thousands of VPN servers worldwide. Connect to thousands of ultra-fast VPN servers in 224+ locations for smooth 4K streaming, low-ping gaming, and quick downloads.
  • Stops common online threats. Enable our next-gen antivirus to catch malicious downloads, stop dangerous phishing links, and block intrusive ads to keep your browsing experience clean and fast.
  • Protects your private details. Stop hackers and network snoops from intercepting your sensitive personal information, banking details, or passwords while you browse.
  • Sends alerts when your data leaks. Our Dark Web Monitor Pro will warn you if your email addresses or credit card details are spotted in underground hacker sites, so you can take action to protect your accounts and payment information.
  1. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data and verify that the device has basic internet access without the VPN.
  2. Complete the hotel, airport, café, or other captive-portal login before starting the VPN. A VPN tunnel often cannot begin until the access network has accepted the device’s terms or login.
  3. Open the VPN app and select its obfuscated, stealth, camouflage, or restricted-network mode if one is available.
  4. Start with an exit server geographically near mainland China, such as Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, or another nearby location supported by the provider. No location is always best.
  5. If the first connection fails, change both the protocol and the server location rather than repeatedly retrying the same combination.
  6. Test a simple foreign website or search engine first, then test the exact apps and services needed for the trip.
  7. If the VPN connects but one service remains unavailable, try another exit location. The problem may be that the service has blocked the VPN’s exit IP rather than that the tunnel failed.
  8. Disconnect and reconnect after switching between hotel Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi, local mobile data, roaming, and eSIM data.

What should you do when the VPN will not connect?

Follow the troubleshooting sequence below in order. The sequence separates an underlying internet problem from a VPN-blocking problem and preserves a fallback if the primary service remains unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check ordinary internet access: disconnect the VPN and open a permitted website. If ordinary access fails, resolve the Wi-Fi, mobile-data, or captive-portal issue first.
  2. Complete the captive portal: open a browser, accept the hotel or public-network terms, and confirm that basic browsing works.
  3. Change the access network: switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, roaming, or eSIM data, or switch in the opposite direction.
  4. Change the protocol: select another supported connection method and enable the provider’s obfuscation or stealth mode.
  5. Change the server: try a nearby location, then a different region. A blocked IP may be the only problem.
  6. Disable split tunneling temporarily: route all traffic through the VPN while testing so that the required app is not accidentally excluded.
  7. Temporarily disable third-party firewalls or DNS filters for diagnosis. Restore those protections after testing, and do not weaken employer-managed security controls without authorization.
  8. Restart the VPN app and device. Reconnect after the network changes rather than leaving a failed tunnel in a stale state.
  9. Check for updates only if you have a working way to obtain them. Pre-travel installation and offline installers are safer than depending on an in-country update.
  10. Use saved support channels: contact the provider through the support email or instructions saved before departure.
  11. Switch to the backup: use roaming, a travel eSIM, a second VPN already installed, or another connectivity method.

Is a travel eSIM or international roaming better than a VPN?

A travel eSIM or international roaming plan can be a useful backup or alternative for a short trip, but neither option is universally guaranteed. Some international roaming plans and travel eSIMs route traffic through infrastructure outside mainland China, which may allow access to foreign services without a locally terminated connection.

Option Where it helps Important limitations Best use
VPN Protects the tunnel from local-network observation and can provide an overseas exit location Can be blocked, may require pre-arrival setup, and may not work on every network or service Primary connection when tested before departure
International roaming May use the home carrier’s international routing and avoids dependence on VPN protocol availability Can be expensive; speed, fair-use rules, and hotspot support vary Independent backup or short tourist trip
Travel eSIM May route traffic outside mainland China and avoids downloading a VPN after arrival Requires a compatible, often unlocked phone; routing, data limits, activation, and hotspot support vary Backup data connection for tourists
Local SIM Can provide local calling and data access Routing and filtering conditions differ from foreign roaming and eSIM services Local connectivity needs, not a guaranteed circumvention method

For a short tourist trip, a monthly VPN plus roaming or a travel eSIM is usually a more resilient plan than relying on one VPN alone. For heavy remote work, compare data allowances, latency, video-call stability, and hotspot restrictions before departure.

Are proxy subscriptions or “airport” services safe alternatives?

Proxy-style circumvention subscriptions, sometimes called “airports,” can be faster than direct connections in some circumstances, but they introduce configuration, payment, takedown, and security risks. Recent research discusses their use in China and the associated risks in research on “airport” circumvention services.

Do not casually treat an unknown proxy service as safer than an established provider. Avoid unofficial APK files, copied configuration files, browser extensions from unverified sources, apps requesting excessive permissions, and services with unclear ownership or payment arrangements. A service that bypasses filtering may still collect activity data, expose credentials, or disappear without warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is using a VPN legal in China?

China restricts unauthorized VPN and circumvention services, and enforcement can be arbitrary or difficult to predict. The legal and regulatory environment distinguishes between approved or authorized network services and unauthorized circumvention services; a short-term foreign visitor, resident, journalist, business, and organization may face different practical circumstances, but no visitor should treat that difference as a legal guarantee.

Check current official guidance, follow employer and university policies, and obtain professional legal advice for sensitive, commercial, journalistic, or research use. The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission’s report on censorship and circumvention documents restrictions and arbitrary enforcement concerns. This article is practical travel information, not legal advice.

What privacy and security protection does a VPN actually provide?

A VPN can encrypt traffic between a device and the VPN server, but a VPN does not make a traveler anonymous. The VPN provider can potentially observe connection metadata, endpoint services can identify the account, device-management systems can log activity, and a targeted adversary may use information outside the encrypted tunnel.

Evaluate logging policies, independent audits, ownership, jurisdiction, leak protection, payment practices, and account-security options separately from China connectivity. A provider that performs well behind the Great Firewall is not automatically the best privacy choice, and a provider’s no-logs statement is not proof that no data is ever collected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For journalists, activists, researchers, politically sensitive users, or anyone facing targeted surveillance, a consumer VPN is not a complete threat model. Seek specialist digital-security advice, use employer-approved or professionally approved infrastructure where applicable, and do not assume that obfuscation provides anonymity.

Which setup fits your type of China trip?

Traveler Recommended setup Reason and caution
Short-term tourist Monthly mainstream VPN, installed before departure, plus roaming or travel eSIM backup Astrill may be financially disproportionate for a few days; a multi-year plan is not useful if the service fails and a refund is inaccessible
Frequent business traveler or remote worker Astrill or another currently tested primary service plus independent backup Prioritize reliability, multiple devices, stable calls, and employer-approved connectivity; do not bypass corporate security controls
Family or multi-device traveler A value-oriented service such as Surfshark only after pre-travel testing, with a backup connection Device capacity and simple setup matter, but Surfshark’s China evidence is conflicting
Budget traveler Conditional Surfshark or Windscribe for light use, tested before departure Windscribe’s 10 GB monthly allowance can be unsuitable for video, calls, or sustained work
Journalist, activist, or sensitive researcher Specialist threat model and approved security solution, not a consumer VPN alone A VPN does not provide anonymity or protection from targeted surveillance; obtain professional advice
China-based resident Current professional legal and security advice before choosing a circumvention method Legal, operational, and personal risks can be more serious than those of a short-term visitor

What should you buy?

Choose Astrill when your top priority is the strongest reported China-specific reliability and the higher cost is acceptable. Astrill’s official product site is Astrill; verify its current price and refund terms at checkout because the dossier does not establish a current official price. Tom’s Guide reported a promotional 27-month Astrill package for $199 in August 2026, but that is a dated third-party pricing signal rather than a price to assume at publication.

Choose ExpressVPN when you want a simpler mainstream experience. TechRadar reported successful access to all websites and streaming services tested in its 2026 China testing, while also noting that ExpressVPN was not the fastest or easiest option in that test. Treat that result as evidence from one test series, not a permanent guarantee. Check the current offer at ExpressVPN’s official site.

Choose Surfshark only if you can test it before departure and carry a backup. TechRadar ranked Surfshark first in its 2026 comparison and reported successful access to ten tested apps and streaming services, while Top10VPN’s separate coverage was more negative. Surfshark is therefore a plausible value choice, not a dependable single plan. Check the current offer at Surfshark’s official site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose NordVPN mainly when you already value its wider feature set and can tolerate uncertainty. NordVPN provides obfuscated servers and NordWhisper, but its own support page says connection from China may fail. A pricing page captured on August 16, 2026 displayed a two-year Basic promotion equivalent to $3.49 per month, $94.23 upfront for the first 27 months, a monthly Basic price of $14.99, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. NordVPN’s official pricing page should be checked for the current billing period, upfront charge, renewal price, taxes, and refund terms before purchase.

Do not buy an unknown free VPN or unofficial APK merely because a search result says it bypasses China’s filtering. If Windscribe is used, treat it as light-use or emergency access: Top10VPN reports a 10 GB monthly allowance and lower effectiveness than Astrill. The most reliable overall travel plan is not a single “guaranteed” VPN; it is a tested primary service, pre-arrival preparation, and an independent connectivity fallback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any VPN guarantee access in mainland China?

No VPN can guarantee uninterrupted access in mainland China. Performance changes with the network, carrier, city, device, protocol, blocked server IPs, and temporary censorship campaigns, so travelers should test before departure and carry an independent backup.

Should I install my VPN before traveling to China?

Yes. Install and authenticate the VPN on every intended device before entering mainland China, test more than one protocol and access network, and save support information offline because downloading, paying for, updating, or recovering the account may be difficult after arrival.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a VPN unblock Netflix, YouTube, or every other service in China?

No. A VPN may connect successfully while a particular website or streaming platform blocks the VPN’s exit IP independently of the Great Firewall. Test the exact services you need and try another exit location if the VPN tunnel works but one service does not.

Is a travel eSIM a replacement for a VPN in China?

A travel eSIM can be a useful alternative or backup because some eSIM traffic is routed through infrastructure outside mainland China, but routing, compatibility, data limits, activation, and hotspot support vary. A travel eSIM is not universally guaranteed to bypass filtering.

Is Astrill worth the higher price for a short China trip?

Astrill is the strongest reliability candidate in the supplied China-specific testing, but its high price may be disproportionate for a short trip. A tourist should compare a monthly plan with roaming or a travel eSIM and should not rely on any provider without a backup.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Astrill is the best reliability candidate for mainland China in 2026, ExpressVPN is the easier mainstream alternative, Surfshark is a conditional value option, and NordVPN is feature-rich but too uncertain to treat as a China-safe single choice. Install and test before arrival, save recovery information offline, and bring roaming or a travel eSIM as backup.
