There is no evidence-based “best VPN” for CAD software as a whole. Autodesk says VPN access can work when the VPN infrastructure supports the software, but latency can slow cloud functions, AutoCAD drawings opened or saved over a VPN can hang or freeze, and Revit file-based worksharing is not designed for VPN use. The right choice depends on whether you need to reach a license or cloud service, work alone on a drawing, or collaborate on a shared model.
Does CAD software work over a VPN?
Sometimes. A VPN can provide a route to a workplace network or remote service, but it does not guarantee a responsive CAD workflow. Autodesk says remote access through VPN is possible when the VPN infrastructure supports it. Autodesk also warns that some VPN setups introduce significant latency, which can delay replies from cloud services and domains that certain software functions require. Autodesk’s remote-work guidance and its VPN latency guidance describe these different sides of the issue.
That distinction matters: being able to connect is not the same as getting acceptable performance, and it is not proof that a particular consumer VPN is compatible with your company’s network or Autodesk setup. The available Autodesk guidance does not compare commercial VPN providers or establish a provider winner.

Choose the remote workflow before choosing a VPN
| What you need to do | What Autodesk guidance indicates | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Reach Autodesk services or use software remotely | VPN access may work if the VPN infrastructure supports it; latency can delay some cloud-service responses. | Ask your IT administrator to verify the route, required services, and performance for your specific setup. |
| Open or save an AutoCAD DWG/DXF over a VPN | Autodesk documents slow opening or saving, hangs, and freezes; performance integrity is not ensured on third-party networks. | Do not assume a VPN will make direct remote file access reliable. Evaluate the file-hosting and remote-work arrangement with IT. |
| Use Revit file-based worksharing on a central model | Autodesk says this workflow is not designed for VPN use and requires the local copy and central file to be in the same geographic location within the same LAN. | Do not treat a consumer VPN as a supported way to collaborate on that central model remotely. |
| Collaborate remotely on a Revit model | For WAN, internet, or VPN connections, Autodesk points to Revit Server Enterprise or cloud-based worksharing as alternatives to evaluate. | Assess a collaboration workflow intended for remote access rather than choosing a VPN brand first. |
AutoCAD: why remote drawing files can be slow or freeze
Autodesk’s support article on slow performance opening or saving DWG or DXF files over a VPN connection documents long waits, hangs, and freezes. Autodesk notes that VPN connections use third-party networks and that performance integrity is not ensured on them.

This is a warning about a workflow, not a test showing that every VPN or every AutoCAD file will fail. It does mean a successful login is a poor proxy for whether drawing access will be stable. If the drawing is stored on a remote file share, have your administrator assess the complete path—VPN, network route, file server, and connection conditions—rather than assuming that changing VPN provider alone will solve it.
Revit: file-based worksharing is not a VPN workflow
Autodesk Support states: “Revit file-based worksharing is not designed for use over a VPN.” Its guidance for a model accessed remotely through a VPN says the local model and central file need to be in the same geographic location within the same LAN.

For remote Revit work involving a WAN, internet, or VPN connection, Autodesk’s guidance is to consider Revit Server Enterprise or cloud-based worksharing. These are workflow alternatives to evaluate with your organization, not a claim that any retail VPN improves collaboration. See Autodesk’s network-file-server and cloud-storage guidance for Revit worksharing.

For Revit 2026 Cloud Worksharing specifically, Autodesk’s product requirements, dated August 6, 2026, list symmetrical internet burst-transfer connectivity per machine in three tiers. These figures apply to that cloud-worksharing context; they are not universal VPN speeds or requirements for every CAD task.

How to evaluate VPN access for your CAD setup
- Identify the task. Separate software or cloud-service access from opening files on a remote share and from multiuser model collaboration. They have different network and workflow considerations.
- Confirm the supported topology. Ask your CAD administrator or IT team whether the specific product, version, file location, and collaboration mode are intended to work through your organization’s VPN.
- Check the actual route and performance. Assess latency and throughput on the route you will use, along with the behavior of the CAD operation you need. A generic provider speed claim does not establish performance for your route or file workflow.
- Test the real operation safely. With your organization’s approval, verify the relevant task—such as signing in, opening a drawing, saving it, or synchronizing a model—and determine how work is recovered if the connection drops. Do not use an unsupported VPN route for Revit file-based worksharing.
- Compare alternatives if the workflow is the bottleneck. For remote Revit collaboration, evaluate the Autodesk-supported server or cloud-worksharing options with your organization. For remote drawing access, have IT review the file-hosting and network arrangement rather than presuming a VPN subscription will fix it.
So, which VPN is best for CAD?
The evidence does not support naming one. Autodesk’s guidance is product- and workflow-specific, and no provider comparison or CAD-over-VPN benchmark establishes that a particular commercial VPN performs best. If your organization requires VPN access for a supported task, use its approved configuration and judge it against your actual route, CAD operation, compatibility needs, security policy, and recovery process. If the task is Revit file-based worksharing or unstable direct access to remote drawing files, first evaluate a different workflow rather than shopping for a VPN brand.
