There is no single VPN that is best for every blogger. The right choice depends on where you work, which countries you need to connect from or view content in, which devices and browsers you use, and what you will pay once any introductory discount ends. This guide shows how to match a service to those needs, what a VPN can and cannot do on public Wi-Fi, and which claims to treat with caution.
Does a blogger working in cafés and hotels need a VPN?
A VPN can add a layer of protection when you connect to a café, hotel, airport or coworking network. It encrypts the traffic between your device and the VPN server, so other people on the same network see less of what you send. Proton VPN’s travel guidance presents public Wi-Fi and travel as a reason to use its service (Proton VPN travel guidance). That is the vendor’s description, not independent proof that every hotspot is dangerous or that a VPN will stop every attack. Keep your software updated, keep websites on HTTPS, and use a password manager alongside any VPN.
What a VPN does not do
Vendor and privacy-group guidance points to several limits that matter more to bloggers than marketing copy does. hide.me’s journalist guidance, published by a VPN provider, is explicit on these points (hide.me journalist VPN guidance).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- It does not make you anonymous. Avoid describing a VPN as making you “completely anonymous” or “100% untraceable.” hide.me itself warns against those claims.
- It does not protect a compromised device. Malware or an intruder can still expose your screen, messages and files.
- It does not erase metadata. Timing and traffic patterns can remain visible.
- It does not stop logged-in services from identifying you. Account logins, cookies and browser fingerprinting can still identify you.
- It does not cover physical risks. Physical surveillance and device seizure are outside what a VPN can address.
- It moves trust to the provider. Your traffic passes through the VPN company, so its logging policy, ownership and security practices matter.
Kill switches and leak protection
A kill switch blocks network traffic if the VPN connection drops, so your laptop does not quietly fall back to the open Wi-Fi connection. Proton VPN describes its kill switch as blocking network traffic after a VPN connection is lost (Proton VPN travel guidance). Whether a kill switch works depends on the app, the operating system and your settings, so confirm it on each device you use.

- Force a drop by turning Wi-Fi off and on, or by stopping the VPN service, then try to load a website.
- If the page loads while the VPN is disconnected, the kill switch did not hold in that configuration. Check the app’s settings or contact support before you rely on it in a café.
Browser VPN or device-wide VPN?
A browser VPN is not the same as a device-wide VPN. Opera announced on September 24, 2026 that its free browser VPN can be turned on to protect users automatically when they connect to public or unsecured Wi-Fi. The feature is opt-in and was rolling out to Opera users in the United States and France at that date (Opera Newsroom announcement). Opera’s head of Opera One engineering, Arjan van Leeuwen, framed it this way: “From the very start, all the way back in 2016, we believed that online privacy should be effortless and straightforward – especially when connecting to public networks while out and about.”
For a blogger, the practical difference is coverage. A browser feature protects web traffic in that browser only. Your messaging app, cloud sync client, or a desktop tool that talks to a server in the background may remain outside it. A device-wide VPN app covers the whole machine, subject to its kill switch and settings.

Comparing services for a blogger’s situation
TechRadar’s 2026 travel VPN comparison includes NordVPN, Surfshark and ExpressVPN, and ranks them using its own judgments, features and pricing at the time of writing (TechRadar travel VPN comparison). Those rankings are TechRadar’s. Prices and network coverage change often, so check each provider’s own page before you pay. This guide did not run hands-on speed, leak or access tests of these services; the details below come from the vendor and publisher pages listed.

Proton VPN
Proton VPN is the option whose travel-specific claims are most fully described in the sources reviewed. Its travel page covers the kill switch, Secure Core routing and travel use. It also says that weak or unreliable connectivity can make a VPN noticeably slower, which is worth remembering if you work from a hotel with poor Wi-Fi (Proton VPN travel guidance). Treat its unlimited data and bandwidth wording as a vendor claim until you check the current plan terms.

NordVPN, Surfshark and ExpressVPN
These three appear in TechRadar’s 2026 travel comparison. The sources reviewed here do not establish their current kill switch behavior, server coverage in the countries you may visit, privacy audits, or free plan limits. Before choosing one, check each provider’s own pages for those details and compare the price you will pay at renewal, not only the first-term offer.
Opera browser VPN
Opera’s feature suits bloggers who work mainly inside one browser and want automatic protection when a network looks unsecured. It is not a substitute for a device-wide app if you use other programs that send data, and its published details cover only the opt-in behavior and rollout regions described above.

A checklist for matching a service to your work
- Privacy policy and evidence: Read the provider’s own logging policy and note the date it was last updated. Be wary of any service that cannot point you to a clear policy.
- Kill switch and leak handling: Confirm the kill switch exists on every device you use and test it as described above.
- Locations: List the countries you will work from and the sites you need to load there. Server coverage is the criterion most likely to differ between providers.
- Protocols and censorship: If you will be in a country that restricts VPN use, check whether the provider offers obfuscated connections, and check local law before you travel.
- Devices and browsers: Confirm support for your phone, laptop and tablet, and whether you need an app, a browser extension, or both.
- Ease of use and support: Set up the service at home before you leave, and check how support is offered.
- Full price including renewal: Compare the renewal price, not only the introductory price, and note the renewal date.
- Free plan limits: If you consider a free plan, check its data cap, server choice and missing features on the provider’s current plan page.
Should I use a VPN on holiday?
Often, yes, for public networks. Whether it makes sense on a particular trip depends on local rules and on the sites you need. Some countries restrict or prohibit VPN use, and those rules change. Check the current position for each destination before you travel. If you plan to use a VPN for work on a trip, install it and sign in at home first, because a download on hotel Wi-Fi may be slow or blocked.
How can I access geo-blocked websites while travelling?
A VPN can route your connection through a server in another country, so some services show content for that location. It does not work for every website or every country. Services may block known VPN addresses, and an account may still be tied to your home region. Use these steps to test before you depend on it:

To deal with this situation, please reconnect your router to the wifi.)
- Install the app and sign in before you leave home.
- Choose a server in the country whose content you need, and confirm the app shows a connected state.
- Load the site you need. If it does not load, try another server in the same country.
- If it still fails, the service may be blocking VPN connections. Contact the VPN provider’s support to ask about options, and do not assume a bypass will work in every country or on every service.
- Note your renewal date so the subscription stays active for the whole trip.
Limits for sensitive work
If your blogging involves protecting sources or other high-risk material, treat a VPN as one layer in a broader plan, not as the plan itself. hide.me’s journalist guidance describes a VPN as one layer rather than a complete security solution (hide.me journalist VPN guidance). Build the plan with a security specialist who can assess your specific threats.
How common VPN use is
Opera’s September 24, 2026 announcement cites a figure from We Are Social’s Digital 2026 Mid-Year Global Update Report: 23% of internet users globally used a VPN as of Q4 2025. The same page also says 77% of internet users worldwide do not use a VPN. Those two shares do not reconcile as complementary figures for the same population and period, so this guide does not rely on either one for its advice.
The 2026 figures are one reason to choose a service deliberately rather than assume everyone around you uses one. The practical decision still rests on where you work and what you need the VPN to do.
