There is no consensus winner for the best VPN for Android phones in 2026. RTINGS names Mullvad its best tested Android VPN; that is an editorial judgment, not a universal result. For Android users, the practical choice depends on whether privacy controls, streaming access, speed evidence, or a free plan matters most.
Which VPN is best for Android?
Choose according to your priority rather than treating one ranking as definitive. RTINGS names Mullvad its best tested Android VPN, emphasizing its privacy-oriented approach and straightforward pricing. Top10VPN puts ExpressVPN first in its Android ranking, while TechRadar describes ExpressVPN as beginner-friendly. The differing results reflect different editorial assessments and criteria.
- For a privacy-oriented approach: Consider Mullvad. RTINGS says its Android app uses WireGuard and has a built-in kill switch; it also warns that streaming services may challenge or block VPN addresses.
- For a free plan: Consider Proton VPN Free if unlimited data is important and its location limits suit you. Confirm the current plan details before signing up.
- For Android-specific controls: Proton’s official Android page lists Always-on VPN and a kill switch, NetShield, split tunneling, and Tor-enabled servers. These are provider-described features, not independent test findings here.
- For speed evidence: Treat the published Android figures as a result from one London test setup, not a forecast for your phone or network.
What matters when choosing an Android VPN?
Privacy evidence is not one thing
Open-source availability, an independent audit, a provider’s privacy policy, and measured leak tests answer different questions. None alone establishes that an app will protect every user’s traffic in every circumstance. Look for evidence about the specific Android app and distinguish provider claims from independent evaluation.

Censored Planet Lab’s MVPNalyzer slides presented at NDSS 2026 report tests of 281 operational free VPN apps collected through 40 Google Play searches, all tested on Android 14. In that sample, 61 apps exchanged cleartext traffic and 29 leaked virtually all websites visited. Those findings concern the tested sample; they do not show that all free VPN apps are unsafe.

Android controls and leak protection
A provider app’s kill switch and Android’s own VPN settings are related but distinct controls. Android’s reviewed settings guide describes Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN as system-level options to help prevent traffic from leaving outside the tunnel if it drops. Menu names and paths can differ by Android version and phone manufacturer, so look under your phone’s network or VPN settings. If available, enable the blocking option only after confirming the VPN works; otherwise, a misconfiguration could prevent connectivity.
Split tunneling lets you choose which apps use the VPN, where the app supports it. That can be useful when an app needs a direct connection, but excluded apps do not receive the VPN tunnel’s protection. Check the Android-specific feature list rather than assuming a desktop feature is also available on Android.

Streaming and location access
VPN access to a streaming service can change with the service, the VPN exit location, and geography. RTINGS notes that streaming services may challenge or block recognized VPN addresses when reviewing Mullvad. If access to a particular service is essential, verify that use case with the provider and service; a ranking or a general claim of streaming support cannot guarantee it will work from your location.
Free plans and their trade-offs
TechRadar describes Proton VPN Free as having unlimited data but limited server locations and no manual location choice. Proton’s own Android page also describes its free plan as having no data limit. Free plans from other providers may impose different data caps, location choices, or feature restrictions. These terms can change, so check the provider’s current plan page before relying on a free tier for travel, streaming, or continuous use.

What do Android speed tests actually show?
NordVPN’s report dated August 10, 2026 summarizes a VPN comparison by Artifact Security, which it says was published in June 2026. The overall comparison used 55 routes across five origin regions, but the Android performance section specifically says Android was tested from London. The report gives these median results:
| Provider | Median Android download | Median Android upload |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 526.6 Mbps | 223.3 Mbps |
| ExpressVPN | 494.8 Mbps | 148.9 Mbps |
These are Artifact Security test results as reported by NordVPN, not expected speeds for every Android device. The report also says NordVPN had the fastest measured connection time among providers tested, averaging 1.8 seconds across its reported measurement. A London test cannot predict results on a different carrier, Wi-Fi network, phone, VPN server, or destination. The report describes Artifact Security as “an independent testing firm based in London that measures the real-world performance of consumer security and privacy products”; that wording is from NordVPN’s report.

How to set up VPN protection on an Android phone
- Choose an Android app and install it from an official distribution source. Proton lists Google Play, F-Droid, and a GitHub APK as download options for its Android app. Use the provider’s official page to reach its listed channels and confirm the current installation instructions.
- Sign in or create an account, then connect. Select a server location appropriate to your use. Connection and location options depend on the provider and plan.
- Check your phone’s VPN settings. Find the VPN entry in your Android network settings. Where available, enable Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN if you want Android to restrict connections outside the tunnel.
- Review app-level controls. Check whether the Android app offers a kill switch or split tunneling, and understand which apps you exclude before using that setting.
- Verify the use case that matters to you. If you need a particular streaming service, location, or app to work, test it on your own connection rather than assuming a provider ranking guarantees it.
Which Android VPN should you choose?
Use the recommendation that matches the trade-off you can accept: Mullvad is RTINGS’ privacy-oriented tested pick, and Proton VPN Free is a candidate when unlimited data matters more than choosing a free server location. ExpressVPN’s first-place ranking at Top10VPN and beginner-friendly description at TechRadar further show why the criteria behind a recommendation matter. Compare current plan terms and verify essential Android features before committing; the available evidence does not establish a complete current price comparison.
