What should you compare before buying?
1. User and number model
Decide whether one person needs a separate business line or several users must answer and text from the same number. A solo plan may price by user, while team workflows can depend on shared inboxes, permissions and how many numbers or extensions are included.

- Confirm whether SMS and MMS are included in the specific plan.
- Ask whether business-number registration is required before sending messages.
- Check volume limits, supported destinations and the process for registering a number.
3. Call handling
List the behaviors you actually need: forwarding to a mobile phone, simultaneous ringing, voicemail transcription, menus, queues, recording and transfers. A service that supplies a number is not automatically equivalent to a full call-queue system.

Service-by-service analysis
Google Voice: lowest listed entry cost
Google Voice is the sensible starting point for a U.S. solo user or a business already invested in Google Workspace. Its listed 2026 comparison price is $10 per user per month, making it the lowest entry reference in this group. Before choosing it, verify that your country is eligible and that its ring-group and messaging behavior supports the way your business answers calls. It is best when a straightforward business line is more important than advanced contact-center administration.

Grasshopper: straightforward solo-business forwarding
Grasshopper is aimed at connecting customers to a virtual business phone system without desk-phone hardware. TechRadar’s 2026 listing puts the True Solo plan at $14 per month when billed annually or $18 when paid monthly; that listing includes one number and one extension. The service combines forwarding, business texting, voicemail and softphone access, so it suits an owner who wants calls to reach an existing mobile phone while keeping business communication separate from personal use.
Quo (formerly OpenPhone): shared team conversations
Quo is an app-centric platform for small teams. It brings calls and messages into a unified desktop and mobile workflow and is designed around shared team numbers and collaborative texting. That makes it a stronger fit than a strictly personal line when several people need visibility into the same customer conversation. Its listed Starter reference is $15 per user per month with annual billing or $19 monthly. Confirm current plan limits and complete any required SMS registration before promising customers a high-volume texting workflow.
Rank #4
- NOT LANDLINE PHONE: PROFESSIONAL VOIP PHONE ONLY! This device is a Voice over IP (VoIP) Phone and is NOT compatible with standard home landline/PSTN connections (RJ11). It REQUIRES a subscription to a SIP Service Provider (e.g., VoIP.ms, RingCentral, ) or an Active PBX System (e.g., 3CX, Asterisk, FreePBX) and network configuration to function.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR HD AUDIO & NOISE REDUCTION: Featuring advanced noise reduction technology and wideband codecs like G.722 and Opus, this VoIP phone ensures high-definition voice transmission. The HD handset and speaker provide stable, professional-grade communication even in busy or noisy office environments.
- ENHANCED 6-PARTY CONFERENCING: Boost team collaboration with built-in 6-party conference support, allowing real-time multi-party communication without external bridges. Designed for busy professionals, it streamlines workflows and provides an efficient collaboration experience.
- VIBRANT COLOR DISPLAY & ERGONOMIC DESIGN: Equipped with a 2.4-inch 320x240px color display with an adjustable backlight for high-resolution graphics. The versatile stand adjusts to 60° and 45° for desk use or a 15° wall-mount angle to suit any workspace layout.
- SEAMLESS CONNECTIVITY & POE SUPPORT: This T52P model supports 2 SIP accounts and features dual 100M Ethernet ports. It is powered via Power over Ethernet (PoE) for a clean setup, and unlike many competitors, it includes a dedicated 5V/1A power adapter for flexible installation.
RingCentral: administration and scale
RingCentral is the broadest option in this comparison. Its virtual-phone offering combines numbers with SMS and MMS, internet fax, integrations such as Salesforce, HubSpot, Google and Microsoft Teams, open APIs, analytics and contact-center capabilities. The listed Core entry reference is $20 per user per month. Choose it when reporting, centralized administration, integrations or future contact-center growth outweigh the appeal of the simplest setup; a smaller team may find the breadth unnecessary.

Zoom Phone: best for Zoom-standardized organizations
Zoom Phone is subscription-based and includes a domestic phone number on its plans. It connects with Salesforce, Slack, Microsoft and Google, so organizations already using Zoom can keep meetings and voice under one vendor. The listed U.S. and Canada Metered reference is $10.50 per user per month. Check the metered-calling terms and confirm that the included domestic-number scope matches every location your team serves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the cheapest number that forwards to a cell phone
Start with the actual requirement rather than the headline price. Grasshopper explicitly combines a virtual number with forwarding, texting, voicemail and softphone access, making its True Solo plan the most direct match for a one-person business that wants calls sent to a mobile phone. Google Voice has the lower listed entry price, but you should verify forwarding behavior, ring-group limits and messaging support for your account before selecting it. For more than one person, compare the cost and usability of a shared team workflow instead of multiplying a solo plan.
Setup and migration checklist
- Map the call flow. Decide who answers first, when calls forward, what callers hear after hours and whether a shared number or individual lines are needed.
- Confirm availability. Check local, toll-free or mobile-number eligibility for your country and the destinations you call.
- Validate the real price. Review billing frequency, taxes, number fees, international rates, add-ons and any contract or trial conditions.
- Prepare messaging. Confirm SMS/MMS support, registration requirements and volume limits before publishing the number to customers.
- Acquire or port the number. If keeping an existing number, read the provider’s porting requirements, timing and cancellation rules before the old service is closed.
- Configure users and routing. Set forwarding, simultaneous ringing, voicemail, menus, queues, transfers and recording only where the selected plan supports them.
- Test every channel. Place inbound and outbound calls, send and receive SMS or MMS, test after-hours behavior and confirm that each team member sees the conversations they should.
- Document the exit plan. Save account details, porting information and any records your business must retain before changing providers.
Do you need special hardware?
No. These products are cloud subscriptions delivered through browser, desktop and mobile applications. A USB or Bluetooth headset, router upgrade or VoIP desk phone can be optional convenience equipment, but none is required to obtain the virtual number or use the core service. Buy hardware only after confirming that your chosen provider and workflow support it.
