The best video game for playing as a villain depends on what kind of villainy you want: Tyranny puts you inside a tyrant’s victorious regime, while Dishonored 2 and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider let you decide whether to act as a lethal assassin or show restraint. These games offer different degrees of villainy—not all make evil mandatory.
Which villain game should you play?
| Game | What makes it a fit | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tyranny | You serve an Overlord whose regime has already won. | Players who want role-playing and consequential choices inside an oppressive order. |
| Dishonored 2 | You play an assassin and choose between lethal and nonlethal approaches. | Players who want stealth, supernatural abilities, and control over how brutal they are. |
| Dishonored: Death of the Outsider | A standalone assassin story supports stealth or direct violence. | Players looking for a standalone route into the Dishonored assassin fantasy. |
Tyranny: play as an official of a victorious regime
Tyranny is the clearest choice if you want villainy to be part of the premise rather than a path you may or may not take. The game begins after Kyros the Overlord has conquered the land. You are a Fatebinder, an officer responsible for enforcing the regime’s law. Obsidian’s official description calls the Fatebinder “the judge and executioner of Kyros’ law.” (Obsidian’s official Tyranny page)
Your decisions shape the lives of people in the Tiers and affect factions within the Overlord’s army. That makes the game a fit for players who want to enforce, reshape, or seek power within an existing oppressive order—not a conventional campaign to defeat the villain. Paradox describes it as a classic-styled RPG with tactical real-time-with-pause combat and choices that can change the world, your allies and enemies, and even its layout. (Paradox’s official Tyranny page)
Dishonored 2: choose how far to go
Dishonored 2 offers villain play as a choice of approach. You play as Emily Kaldwin or Corvo Attano, each with distinct powers, gadgets, and weapons. Bethesda describes options ranging from fighting through the streets to sneaking across rooftops, and lets you choose which enemies to eliminate or spare. You can make the assassin’s path brutal, but the game also supports nonlethal play. (Bethesda’s official Dishonored 2 page)

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider: a standalone assassin story

Bethesda describes a choice between sneaking through environments and eliminating opposition with supernatural abilities, gadgets, and weapons. It is a standalone adventure and a compact way into the series’ assassin fantasy, but it does not force you to play as an evil character. (Bethesda’s official Death of the Outsider page)

- Want villainy built into the story? Start with Tyranny: you serve the victorious Overlord’s regime from the outset.
- Want to decide how violent to be? Pick Dishonored 2 or Death of the Outsider, which support both lethal and nonlethal approaches.
- Want consequential role-playing choices? Tyranny emphasizes decisions that affect the world and its factions.
- Want assassin action and stealth? Both Dishonored games offer stealth, supernatural abilities, and direct combat.
These recommendations distinguish serving an oppressive regime from choosing a violent route as an assassin. They are examples of different kinds of villain play, not a definitive ranking of every game that allows morally questionable actions.
