For most cooperative or dedicated servers, XPortal Networks is the best overall choice because it gives players a destination selector while letting administrators define public, personal, private and custom networks. Choose TeleportEverything instead if your main goal is changing what can pass through portals, such as ores, ingots, carts or nearby creatures. TheGreatestPortal is the lightest option when you simply want one compact directory of destinations.

These mods solve different multiplayer problems. Your choice should follow the server’s travel policy, tolerance for configuration, balance expectations and crossplay requirements.

Best Valheim portal mods at a glance

Mod Best for Core design Multiplayer control Installation considerations
XPortal Networks Organized shared travel, factions and admin-managed servers Select a destination from networks instead of matching portal tags manually Global/public, personal, private and up to 15 administrator-defined custom networks; server-enforced permissions Requires BepInExPack Valheim and Jötunn; install on the dedicated server and every client
TeleportEverything Servers that want to change transport rules Configurable portal behavior for allies, ores, ingots, carts and optional enemy behavior Owner-controlled synchronized settings, including enemy restrictions and transport fees Install on both server and clients for consistent behavior
TheGreatestPortal Small bases and simple portal directories One portal presents a list of portals built around the world Minimal policy layer; primarily a convenience replacement for a large portal hub Confirm the current loader and client/server requirements before deployment

No exact release-version numbers are established in the available documentation, so record the precise mod, dependency and Valheim versions you install rather than assuming the latest files will remain compatible.

What makes a portal mod good for multiplayer?

A portal mod that feels excellent in a solo world can create confusion or arguments on a shared server. Evaluate each candidate against six practical questions.

Can players find the right destination?

Vanilla tag matching is simple but fragile: a typo, duplicate tag or renamed base can send a player to an unexpected location. A destination list or named network reduces that coordination burden. XPortal Networks and TheGreatestPortal address discovery directly; TeleportEverything leaves destination organization closer to the server’s existing setup.

Who is allowed to connect or remove a portal?

Public travel is convenient, but a faction may want private routes, and an administrator may need to stop visitors from dismantling infrastructure. XPortal Networks has explicit public, personal, private and custom-network concepts, plus a setting that can limit portal destruction to the creator or administrators.

What is allowed through the portal?

Valheim’s normal restrictions are part of its progression balance. If the group wants to move ore, ingots or carts, TeleportEverything is the relevant design because it exposes those transport rules as configurable modes. Decide the policy before installation so players understand whether exploration and shipping remain meaningful.

How much administration is acceptable?

A server with several bases, groups or scheduled events benefits from named networks and synchronized settings. A small group may prefer a single directory portal with almost no policy decisions. More control brings more configuration files, permissions and testing.

Will all players be able to connect?

BepInEx-based modded servers have an important crossplay limitation: RespawnHost’s multiplayer guidance reports that the server must run with crossplay=false. That excludes PlayFab crossplay users, including console players, from that configuration. Treat this as a deployment decision, not a minor troubleshooting detail.

Can the rules be changed without rebuilding the world?

Live configuration is valuable on a persistent server. XPortal Networks documents live reloading for its custom network file. TeleportEverything’s owner-controlled synchronized settings let an administrator alter transport behavior centrally, although players should be warned before a rule change affects an active expedition.

XPortal Networks: best for organized multiplayer transportation

XPortal Networks is the strongest all-round recommendation when the server needs a coherent transportation system rather than merely faster travel. Instead of requiring players to remember and type matching tags, it provides a destination-selection interface backed by several network types.

How its networks map to common server structures

  • Global or public networks: Use these for destinations that the whole community should see, such as a shared spawn, a central warehouse or a boss arena.
  • Personal networks: Keep a player’s private routes separate from public infrastructure when each builder has several outposts.
  • Private portals: Restrict a route to a defined group or owner when a faction, event or project needs controlled access.
  • Custom named networks: Create purpose-built categories for a server’s geography or activities instead of putting every destination into one undifferentiated list.

Administrators can define up to 15 custom networks. The definitions are stored in xportal_networks.json, use IDs 1 through 15, and are documented as reloadable while the server is running. That makes it possible to add or reorganize categories without rebuilding portal structures, provided you follow the mod’s configuration format and back up the file first.

Settings that matter for balance and governance

  • Default destinations: Set a predictable landing point for a network so newcomers do not have to learn every route immediately.
  • Uncapped portal names: Use descriptive names when a large world has more locations than short tags can identify clearly.
  • Optional doubled portal costs: Keep the convenience of destination selection while increasing its resource cost for a more survival-focused server.
  • Removal protection: Limit portal destruction to its creator or administrators to prevent accidental or malicious dismantling.
  • Server-enforced settings: Apply one policy to all connected players instead of relying on each client to choose matching local values.

Dependencies and placement

XPortal Networks lists BepInExPack Valheim and Jötunn as prerequisites. Install the mod and its dependencies on the dedicated server and on every player’s client. A client that lacks the required files can fail to load the interface or behave differently from the server, while a server without the server-side installation cannot enforce the network definitions.

Who should choose it?

Choose XPortal Networks for a community with shared bases, factions, role-based access, an administrator who wants consistent rules, or a world where portal discovery has become a logistics problem. It is less suitable when the group wants to preserve the exact vanilla transport restrictions with no new routing layer.

TeleportEverything: best for changing what can travel

TeleportEverything addresses a different question: not “which portal should I use?” but “what is allowed to go through it?” Its documented modes cover allies, ores, ingots and carts, with optional behavior for enemies and configurable transport fees.

Transport modes and their consequences

  • Standard vanilla behavior: Retain the game’s normal portal rules when you want the mod installed but do not want broad balance changes.
  • Ore and ingot transport: Allow mined materials or processed metal to bypass the usual shipping journey. This makes remote mining safer and faster, but reduces the strategic value of coastal routes, carts and nearby smelting bases.
  • Cart transport: Move carts through portals when the server wants to preserve cart-based hauling as an option without requiring long overland trips.
  • Ally transport: Define whether nearby friendly players can use the same travel behavior, which can simplify group expeditions.
  • “Vikings don’t run” mode: Block portal use when enemies are nearby. This preserves a risk window around combat and prevents a player from escaping every encounter instantly.
  • “Take them with you” mode: Allow nearby enemies to follow through the portal. This creates a deliberately dangerous escape route and should be tested in a safe staging area before enabling it on a live world.

The mod also documents configurable transport fees. A fee can restore some of the resource or effort that unrestricted teleportation removes, but set it with the server’s progression pace in mind rather than treating it as an automatic fix.

Server and client synchronization

The author recommends installing TeleportEverything on both the server and clients. The server owner controls synchronized settings, so publish a short rule sheet when enabling ore, ingot, cart or creature transport. Players should know whether an expedition can bypass a shipping route before they commit to a building or exploration plan.

Popularity is not the same as suitability

The TeleportEverything Thunderstore page reported 729.2K downloads when captured in 2026. That is a platform-reported download count, not proof that it is universally the most popular or best-balanced portal mod. Treat it as evidence of substantial interest while judging the configuration options against your own server’s rules.

Who should choose it?

Choose TeleportEverything when the defining requirement is material or entity transport: a group tired of hauling silver, a builder who wants carts to move between regions, or an administrator designing a custom risk model around enemy pursuit. If your main problem is finding destinations, XPortal Networks or TheGreatestPortal is a more direct fit.

TheGreatestPortal: best for a compact destination directory

TheGreatestPortal takes the simplest approach covered here. PC Gamer describes it as one portal that presents a list of portals built around the world. That turns a sprawling portal room into a single directory point.

Why a single directory can be better than a hub

Large portal hubs consume building materials, floor space and maintenance time. They also force players to walk past every connection before finding the one they need. A list-based portal can fit inside a small base, outpost or temporary expedition camp while still exposing the world’s destinations.

Where its simplicity helps

  • Small cooperative groups that do not need factions or permission tiers.
  • Builders who want to reclaim the room used for dozens of tagged portals.
  • Servers that want a convenience upgrade without changing which resources may travel.

What it does not attempt to solve

TheGreatestPortal is a directory concept, not a full governance framework. The available description does not establish XPortal-style custom network IDs, portal-removal restrictions, or TeleportEverything-style ore and enemy modes. Do not select it expecting those controls; its advantage is a smaller decision surface.

How to install a portal mod on a multiplayer server

Use a staged deployment. The exact release versions are not specified in the available documentation, so pin the versions you choose and test them together.

  1. Choose the policy first. Decide whether you need destination selection, altered cargo rules, enemy behavior, or only a compact directory. Write down whether ore, ingots, carts and creatures may travel.
  2. Prepare a backup. Back up the world save, server configuration and any existing mod configuration before adding or updating a loader or portal mod.
  3. Install BepInEx. BepInEx is the base loader for this Valheim mod ecosystem. RespawnHost states that it belongs on the server and every client, and that gameplay mods generally need matching versions.
  4. Install dependencies. For XPortal Networks, install BepInExPack Valheim and Jötunn in addition to the portal mod. Verify that the same dependency versions are present wherever the mod is loaded.
  5. Install the portal mod on both sides. Copy the server-side files to the dedicated server and the client-side files to every player’s installation. Do not assume a server-only installation will provide the user interface or synchronized behavior.
  6. Configure one rule at a time. Start with default behavior, then enable a network, cargo mode or fee separately. This makes it clear which setting caused a problem.
  7. For XPortal Networks, edit custom networks carefully. Use IDs 1–15 in xportal_networks.json, keep a backup of the file and use the documented live reload after validating its syntax.
  8. Run a closed test. Have two players connect, create or select destinations, use a portal during and outside combat, and test every item category your policy mentions.
  9. Document the release set. Record the Valheim version, loader version, portal-mod version, dependency versions and configuration files. Give players the same list before they join.

Crossplay and platform limits

The most consequential compatibility warning is not about a portal setting. RespawnHost reports that BepInEx-based modded servers must use crossplay=false. That setting prevents PlayFab crossplay users, including console players, from joining that server configuration.

If your community includes console players or relies on PlayFab crossplay, decide that before investing in a modded portal design. A PC-only modded server can proceed with the BepInEx deployment; a crossplay community may need to remain unmodded or split into separate worlds. Re-check this behavior after major Valheim updates because loader and platform support can change.

Balancing portal convenience on a shared world

When unrestricted ore travel is appropriate

Allowing ore and ingots through portals is useful for a building-focused server, a late-game world where hauling has become routine, or a group with limited play time. It is a poor fit for a server whose central challenge is planning shipping routes, defending carts and establishing coastal bases.

How to preserve meaningful travel

  • Use TeleportEverything’s fee options rather than making every trip free.
  • Use XPortal Networks’ optional doubled portal costs for a lighter-touch progression tax.
  • Allow unrestricted travel only through a private or administrator-managed network.
  • Keep combat restrictions enabled if instant escape would undermine the server’s danger level.
  • Announce changes before switching rules so earlier construction and exploration decisions remain understandable.

Permissions for shared infrastructure

On a public community server, protect important portals from removal and separate faction routes from global routes. XPortal Networks’ creator-or-admin destruction limit and network categories are designed for this kind of governance. On a private group server, fewer restrictions may be preferable because all players already share responsibility for the world.

Troubleshooting common multiplayer failures

A player cannot connect after the mod was added

  • Confirm BepInEx is installed on the server and that player’s client.
  • Compare the exact Valheim, BepInEx, portal-mod and dependency versions.
  • For XPortal Networks, verify that Jötunn and BepInExPack Valheim are installed on both sides.
  • Check whether the server is using crossplay=false and whether the player is attempting PlayFab console crossplay.

Players see different destinations or settings

  • Verify that every client has the same portal-mod configuration where client files are required.
  • Restart the affected client after a configuration change.
  • For XPortal Networks, validate xportal_networks.json, confirm network IDs are within 1–15 and use the documented live-reload process.
  • Ask the server owner to confirm which settings are server-enforced rather than locally adjustable.

A portal works but cargo is still blocked

Destination selection and transport permissions are separate features. XPortal Networks organizes routes; TeleportEverything is the documented choice for changing ore, ingot, cart or enemy transport. Check which mod is installed and which mode is active before changing unrelated portal tags.

Players can escape combat too easily

Review TeleportEverything’s enemy behavior. “Vikings don’t run” blocks portal use near enemies, while “Take them with you” allows nearby enemies to follow. Choose one deliberately and test it with the server’s intended difficulty.

Decision guide by server type

Server situation Recommended starting point Reason
Shared bases, factions or admin-managed routes XPortal Networks Network types, custom categories, destination defaults and removal controls support governance.
Ore, ingot or cart hauling is the main complaint TeleportEverything Its documented modes directly change what can travel and can add fees or enemy rules.
Small group with too many portals in one room TheGreatestPortal A single directory reduces hub size without requiring a large permission model.
Console and PC players must remain together through PlayFab crossplay No BepInEx-based portal deployment until compatibility changes The reported crossplay=false requirement excludes PlayFab crossplay users from the modded configuration.

Final recommendation

Start with XPortal Networks when multiplayer organization is the priority: it is the most complete routing and permission model in this set. Select TeleportEverything when the server’s defining request is transporting ores, ingots, carts, allies or even enemies under custom rules. Pick TheGreatestPortal when a compact, low-policy destination list solves the problem.

Whichever option you use, treat the server and client files, dependency versions, synchronized settings and crossplay status as one deployment. Test on a backup world, publish the exact version set to players and write down the transport policy before the first expedition.
