There is no single best VA loan lender for every borrower. October 2026 roundups name different winners because they weigh rates, service, loan types, and closing performance differently. Use category picks to build a shortlist, then compare written Loan Estimates based on the same loan scenario—not just advertised rates.
October 2026 VA lender picks by category
CNBC Select’s October 1, 2026 roundup names these lenders for specific needs. These are editorial category selections, not promises of approval, the lowest available rate, or the best fit for an individual borrower.
| Need | CNBC Select pick |
|---|---|
| Customer service | Veterans United |
| Online application | Rocket Mortgage |
| Low rates | Navy Federal Credit Union |
| No origination fees | PenFed Credit Union |
| VA renovation or rehab loan | CrossCountry Mortgage |
| All-cash offers | New American Funding |
| In-person service | Chase |
| Bad credit | Guild Mortgage |
| VA jumbo loan | USAA |
| Down payment assistance | First Federal Bank |
Other current roundups reach different conclusions: NerdWallet’s 2026 award winner is Navy Federal, while Yahoo Finance’s September 30, 2026 roundup names Pennymac its overall pick. The variation reflects differences in editorial criteria and borrower priorities; it is a reason to compare offers, not to treat any ranking as a universal verdict. CNBC Select, NerdWallet, and Yahoo Finance explain their respective selections.
What a VA loan is—and what the lender controls
VA home loans are made by private lenders; the Department of Veterans Affairs guarantees part of the loan. Eligible borrowers apply through a lender they choose and establish eligibility, including obtaining a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). VA-backed purchase loans may be available without a down payment or monthly private mortgage insurance (PMI), depending on the borrower and transaction. The VA does not set each lender’s interest rate, fees, or service standards. See the VA Home Loans program overview.

That leaves meaningful differences between lenders even when the loan is VA-backed: pricing, points, lender fees or credits, underwriting workflow, communication, and ability to handle the particular transaction. Bankrate says its 2026 selection weighed pricing, complaints, VA experience, and closing history. It reports evaluating more than 1,900 lenders, which together issued 87% of U.S. mortgages in recent years. Those are Bankrate’s stated methodology figures, not a measure of any one lender’s performance. Bankrate’s lender review and methodology.
How to compare VA loan offers
- Get comparable written Loan Estimates. Ask several lenders to quote the same purchase or refinance, loan amount, term, property type, occupancy, and rate-lock period. A quote for a different scenario is not a fair comparison.
- Compare the rate and the full cost. Review interest rate, annual percentage rate (APR), discount points, lender fees, lender credits, estimated cash to close, monthly payment, and cost over a time horizon that reflects how long you expect to keep the loan. A lower note rate that requires points is not equivalent to a zero-point quote.
- Match the lender to the transaction. Ask about experience with the specific product you need, such as a purchase, cash-out refinance, Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan (IRRRL), jumbo loan, renovation or rehab financing, or an assistance program.
- Check the execution, not only the quote. Find out who will manage the loan, how often you can expect updates, how appraisal and underwriting are handled, whether the lender can meet your closing schedule, and how you can reach support from where you are stationed or buying.
- Verify availability and terms directly. Confirm that the lender serves the state and transaction involved and ask for its current eligibility and underwriting requirements. A stated credit-score minimum or editorial ranking does not guarantee approval.
Bankrate’s comparison display provides a useful set of cost fields to request or line up: rate, APR, points, upfront costs, monthly payment, and eight-year cost. Its displayed figures and lender offers depend on their stated assumptions and can change; they are not rates every borrower will receive. Bankrate’s VA rate comparison.

How to interpret October 2026 VA rate figures
Bankrate’s rate page reported a national average 30-year VA APR of 7.25% on October 6, 2026. This is a dated national snapshot, not a personalized quote or a rate available to every borrower. Its October 7 comparison display showed fields including rate, APR, points, upfront costs, monthly payment, customer score, and eight-year cost. The result for an individual application can differ with loan amount, credit profile, occupancy, term, points, lender credits, and lock period. Ask lenders for current written estimates using matching assumptions, and compare APR and costs alongside the note rate. Bankrate rate comparison.
