The best USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter is one confirmed to work with your exact phone, tablet, or computer—and to include digital-to-analog conversion when your device requires it. A USB-C plug alone does not guarantee compatibility. Check the host-device requirements first, then choose an adapter that supports the features you need, such as a headset microphone or inline controls.
How to choose a compatible USB-C headphone adapter
- Check your device’s audio support. Find the manufacturer’s guidance for your exact model. Google advises checking that a USB-C device uses digital audio; available sound settings and call support can vary by device. Google’s USB-C audio guidance explains the compatibility check.
- Choose digital-to-analog conversion when required. The Android Open Source Project’s adapter specification permits digital-to-analog adapters and does not support analog-only adapters. That means an adapter designed only to pass analog audio may not work with an Android USB-C port. Android’s USB headset specification describes the supported adapter type.
- Check headset features separately. If you make calls or use inline buttons, verify microphone input, headset detection, and button-event support for both the adapter and host. The Android specification describes these behaviors, but actual support depends on the device.
- Check charging needs. If your device has only one USB-C port and you need to charge while listening, look for a model explicitly listing USB-C charging pass-through. The product examples below do not establish a particular pass-through model.
- Confirm local availability and terms. Prices, supported-device lists, and warranties vary by region and can change. Check the manufacturer’s current local listing before buying.

Do you need an adapter with a DAC?
A DAC converts digital audio from the USB-C device into the analog signal a 3.5 mm headphone or speaker connection uses. Some devices require an adapter with this conversion built in. Samsung says some Galaxy devices need a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC and advises choosing a third-party adapter that is DAC-compatible. Samsung’s adapter guidance is a useful starting point, but check the requirements for your specific Galaxy model.

For Android devices, the Android Open Source Project specification allows digital-to-analog adapters and says analog-only adapters are not supported. This does not mean every DAC adapter works with every Android device: host support and the adapter’s implementation still matter.

Will your headphone microphone and buttons work?
Not necessarily. USB-C audio adapters can support stereo playback, microphone input, headset detection, and button events, but the phone or computer must support the relevant functions too. If calls, voice recordings, or inline volume and playback controls matter, check for explicit compatibility with those features rather than relying on the connector or the adapter’s DAC label alone.

What to do if the adapter does not work
- No sound: Recheck the host manufacturer’s USB-C digital-audio guidance and whether the adapter includes the required DAC. Test the adapter with another confirmed-compatible device if available.
- Headphones work, but the microphone or buttons do not: Check whether the host supports headset input and inline controls. Playback compatibility does not prove that every headset function is supported.
- Sound works, but calls do not: Google notes that call support can vary by device. Check the device’s sound and call settings and consult its manufacturer guidance.
- You need to charge while listening: Replace a basic adapter with one that explicitly lists charging pass-through, and verify that feature for your device. Do not assume a headphone adapter provides it.
