If sound quality and battery life are your priorities, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the strongest current candidate among USB-C over-ear headphones. Its USB-C port is for charging only, though, so you cannot listen through the cable. If you want wired listening over USB-C, look at the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) or the Apple AirPods Max (USB-C, first generation). Battery figures from manufacturers and reviewers are measured under different conditions, so use them to shortlist models rather than to rank them precisely.
Check what the USB-C port does before comparing anything
USB-C is the connector on all three models in this shortlist, but it does different jobs on each. Confirm the function before you buy, because the port type alone does not tell you whether the headphones can play audio through it.
- Charging only: Sony WH-1000XM6. Wired listening uses the 3.5 mm cable supplied in the box.
- Charging plus wired audio: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). According to What Hi-Fi?’s buying guide, wired listening needs the headphones to have battery power.
- Charging plus wired lossless audio: Apple AirPods Max (USB-C). Apple says lossless audio over USB-C works with compatible content and services.
Apple’s AirPods Max 2 is a separate generation. What Hi-Fi? lists it at 20 hours in its 2026 buying guide, and it should not be assumed to share the first-generation USB-C audio behavior described here.
Side-by-side comparison
| Model | Battery claim and conditions | USB-C function | Sound and fit notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Maximum 30 hours with noise cancelling on, for AAC, SBC, or LC3. Maximum 26 hours with noise cancelling on and LDAC. With noise cancelling off, Sony lists 40 hours for AAC, SBC, or LC3 and 36 hours for LDAC. Sony’s official Help Guide is the source. | Charging only. Wired listening uses the supplied 3.5 mm cable. | What Hi-Fi? prefers its sound to the Bose in a head-to-head comparison, calling it more natural and clear. This is one publication’s listening judgment. |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | About 30 hours with ANC on, as reported by What Hi-Fi? and listed in its buying guide. Detailed figures for other modes were not stated in the sources reviewed; check Bose’s regional specifications. | Charging and wired listening over USB-C. Wired listening requires battery power. | What Hi-Fi? describes strong noise blocking and a comfortable fit. It rates Sony’s sound higher in its comparison. |
| Apple AirPods Max (USB-C, first generation) | Apple publishes a battery claim with its test method on its technical page. The test used preproduction units, 50% volume, and ANC on, on specified Apple devices and content. Actual life depends on settings, environment, and use. | Charging and lossless audio over wired USB-C with compatible content and services. | Strongest fit for Apple users. Apple warns that some non-Apple Bluetooth functions may be limited. |
What the battery numbers actually mean
Each brand measures battery life under its own conditions, so the numbers are useful for spotting a long-lasting model but not for ranking one brand against another. Read each figure with its test conditions attached.
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C plug and play: Connect to phones, tablets and laptops that support USB-C digital audio; ready for lessons and everyday listening without Bluetooth pairing or headphone charging
- Mic and in-line controls: Join online classes and work calls with the built-in microphone; adjust volume and manage music playback from the cord without reaching for your device
- Comfortable fit: Soft memory foam ear cushions, an adjustable headband and 90-degree rotating ear cups help you find a comfortable position for studying, working or listening
- 40 mm stereo drivers: Enjoy music, movies and spoken audio with stereo sound; the over-ear cushions provide passive sound isolation to help reduce surrounding distractions
- Foldable for travel: Fold the headphones for storage between classes or commutes; 1.2 m braided cord for everyday use, with headphones and user manual included; carrying bag not included
Sony WH-1000XM6
Sony’s official Help Guide lists a maximum of 30 hours with noise cancelling on for AAC, SBC, and LC3 playback, and 26 hours with LDAC. Sony notes that settings and use conditions change runtime. Sony also says a qualifying USB-PD adapter can give about three hours of playback after a three-minute charge. That figure is Sony’s own, and actual time varies with use and conditions. Sony’s operating-time guide gives the full breakdown, and its specifications page for Singapore lists the same figures, so check the page for your own region.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
What Hi-Fi? reports about 30 hours with ANC on, and its comparison of the Sony and Bose models reports the same figure for both. That is a stated runtime, not a controlled test of the two side by side.

Apple AirPods Max (USB-C, first generation)
Apple’s technical page gives a battery claim and its test method. Because the test used preproduction units at 50% volume with ANC on, expect everyday results to differ, especially at higher volume or with different devices.
Sound quality and noise cancelling are separate choices
A model with the best noise cancelling is not necessarily the one with the best sound. What Hi-Fi? prefers the Sony WH-1000XM6’s sound, but describes the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) as particularly strong at blocking noise and comfortable to wear. Bose engineer Mark Bergeron, quoted in What Hi-Fi?’s buying guide, explains the design approach: “Precise acoustic cavity and porting designs help regulate airflow and pressure variations across key frequency ranges, helping to make the system robust, consistent, and well-behaved during transient events or environments.” That describes Bose’s engineering intent. It does not show that Bose sounds better than Sony.

The publication’s overall judgment is attributable to What Hi-Fi?: the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) “hold their own in terms of feature and design, but the Sony WH-1000XM6 are clear winners when it comes to sound quality.” Treat that as one editorial view and test fit and sound yourself where you can.
Model notes
Sony WH-1000XM6: best for sound and runtime, with no USB-C audio
Choose this model when you mainly want strong sound and long battery life and are happy to charge over USB-C. Expect to carry the 3.5 mm cable for wired listening. Its fast top-up depends on a qualifying USB-PD adapter, so an ordinary phone charger may not give the three-hour quick boost Sony describes.

Choose this model if you want to listen through the USB-C port, or if noise blocking matters more to you than sound. Remember that wired listening needs battery power, so a fully drained pair will not play through the cable.

How to choose by priority
- Best sound and long battery, charging by USB-C is enough: Sony WH-1000XM6.
- Wired listening through USB-C, or the strongest noise blocking: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen).
- Apple ecosystem with wired lossless playback: AirPods Max (USB-C, first generation), confirmed as the first generation and not the AirPods Max 2.
Checks before you buy
- Generation: confirm the exact model and version, since a newer generation may change the port or battery figure.
- Port function: confirm whether USB-C is charge-only or also supports wired audio.
- Regional specifications: check the manufacturer’s regional page for battery figures, because specifications can differ by market.
- Codec and device compatibility: if you rely on LDAC, expect Sony’s lower 26-hour figure with noise cancelling on rather than 30 hours.
- Fit and weight: try the headphones in person where possible, since comfort varies between people.
- Price and availability: prices and stock change often, so check current local listings before buying.
Battery claims can also change after firmware updates, so a figure from one review may not match the headphones you buy later.
