There is no single best WooCommerce upsell plugin. Choose the extension that matches where you want to make the offer: catalog pages, cart or checkout, after payment, or follow-up email. Start with WooCommerce’s own distinction: “Up-sells are products that you recommend instead of the currently viewed product,” while “Cross-sells are products that you promote in the cart based on items the customer has already added.”
Upsell vs. cross-sell in WooCommerce
An upsell replaces the product a shopper is viewing with a higher-quality or higher-priced alternative. A cross-sell adds a complementary item to what is already in the cart. In WooCommerce’s standard setup, merchants assign both from a product’s Linked Products tab; the theme determines the exact display position. Upsells commonly appear below the product description, and cross-sells below the cart table.
These native links are useful for a small catalog. An extension becomes valuable when you need bulk rules, automated recommendations, checkout-specific offers, post-payment funnels, or reporting.

Catalog-wide recommendations: WooCommerce Product Recommendations
WooCommerce Product Recommendations is the clearest fit when you want one rule system for upsells, cross-sells and frequently bought-together products throughout the store. The official listing describes rule-based and automated engines, with placements on shop, category or tag, product, cart, checkout, thank-you and order-pay pages—more than 20 locations in total. It also advertises revenue and conversion reports.
#1 Best Overall
Targeting and rules
The official configuration documentation describes AI or custom rules, default related products, default cart cross-sells and purchase-history inputs. Filters can include category, stock status, product type, tags, price range, featured status and sale status. That makes it suitable for merchandising policies such as “show accessories for this product,” “replace an entry-level item with a premium model,” or “exclude out-of-stock products.” These controls do not establish that a particular rule will increase revenue; performance depends on the catalog, traffic and offer.
Current listing snapshot
On September 30, 2026, WooCommerce’s listing showed a $99 one-year plan, 20K+ active installs and version 4.4.1. Treat these as page-stated figures from that date, not permanent pricing, install or version guarantees.
Compatibility warning
The same listing says the extension has not been optimized for block themes and that recommendation engines may not work as expected when a block theme is active. It separately lists compatibility with cart and checkout blocks, high-performance order storage, Composite Products, Product Bundles and Product Vendors. Those statements are not a blanket guarantee: test the exact theme, block configuration, checkout and extension combination on staging before launch.

Checkout and cart offers
Use a cart or checkout tool when the offer must be visible at the moment of purchase rather than distributed across the catalog. An order bump normally adds a compact, opt-in item to checkout; a cart offer can appear after the shopper has added a qualifying product. Evaluate whether acceptance requires a separate page, a checkbox, or a one-click action, because each changes friction and compatibility requirements.
Shortlist from the 2026 comparison
A September 4, 2026 comparison published by CartFlows lists CartFlows, FunnelKit, WPFunnels, Smart Offers, UpsellWP, One Click Upsell Funnel, CheckoutWC, WooCommerce Product Recommendations, YITH Frequently Bought Together and AutomateWoo. The comparison groups products by reported capabilities such as order bumps, cross-sells, one-click upsells, free plans, starting prices and ratings. CartFlows identifies itself as the maker of CartFlows, so treat those rankings and feature descriptions as publisher-reported shortlist information, not independent testing. Confirm current plan gates, prices, ratings and gateway support on each vendor’s documentation.
Checkout questions to answer
- Does it support your checkout type: shortcode, block checkout or a checkout replacement?
- Can the bump use the same payment method and tax, shipping and coupon rules as the main order?
- What happens when inventory changes or the qualifying product is removed?
- Can you see offer views, acceptances and revenue separately from the main order?
Post-purchase upsells and downsells
A post-purchase funnel presents an additional offer after payment authorization, often with one-click acceptance so the customer does not re-enter card details. This is a different job from a catalog recommendation and requires stricter payment-flow verification. Funnel builders in the shortlist include CartFlows, FunnelKit and WPFunnels; the comparison also names One Click Upsell Funnel as a focused option.
Verify the payment path
- List the gateways and express-wallet methods customers actually use.
- Check the vendor’s current compatibility matrix for those methods and your WooCommerce version.
- Test successful payment, declined payment, refund, cancellation and duplicate-click scenarios in a staging store.
- Confirm how taxes, shipping, coupons, subscriptions and order-status emails behave when an upsell is accepted.
Never assume “one-click” works with every gateway. Gateway support is a product- and version-specific claim that must be rechecked before deployment.

Email and automated recommendations
Email recommendations are appropriate when the offer should arrive after the visit—for example, a replenishment reminder or a complementary product after purchase. AutomateWoo appears in the 2026 shortlist for this automation-oriented role. Compare event triggers, audience conditions, product-data availability, consent handling and the limits of your connected email service. An email recommendation cannot replace an on-site checkout bump; it reaches a different moment in the customer journey.
How to compare plugins without overbuying
1. Map the offer location
Write down the exact page or message: product page, category page, cart, checkout, thank-you page, order-pay page or email. Eliminate tools that cannot place offers there without custom development.
2. Define the offer logic
Decide whether you need manually curated links, category and tag filters, stock and price constraints, frequently bought-together logic, purchase-history rules or a timed funnel. More automation generally means more rules to audit.
3. Check the installed stack
Record your WordPress and WooCommerce versions, theme type, block usage, checkout implementation, payment gateways, subscriptions, bundles and other checkout customizations. Test interactions rather than relying on a generic compatibility badge.
4. Price the complete setup
Include renewal pricing, required companion plugins, premium tiers for reporting or post-purchase offers, payment add-ons and the maintenance cost of overlapping extensions. A low entry price can become expensive if you need a second tool for checkout or email.
Best Value
5. Plan measurement
Track offer impressions, acceptance rate, incremental order value, refunds and support incidents. Compare a defined baseline or holdout period; vendor language about “lifting average order value” is product positioning, not independent proof of an uplift.

- Offers do not appear: check placement hooks, theme templates, block compatibility and rule conditions.
- Checkout breaks: disable extensions one at a time in staging and retest the gateway, coupons, taxes and shipping.
- Duplicate recommendations: choose one system as the source of truth for each placement and remove overlapping native or plugin rules.
- Stale or unsuitable products: add stock, sale-status, price and category filters, then review rules when the catalog changes.
- No measurable improvement: verify tracking and compare against a baseline before changing every offer at once.
Bottom line
For broad, rule-driven merchandising, begin with WooCommerce Product Recommendations—but test its documented block-theme limitation on your store. For checkout order bumps, choose a checkout-focused tool such as CartFlows, FunnelKit, WPFunnels, Smart Offers, UpsellWP or CheckoutWC only after confirming your checkout and gateway stack. For post-payment offers, evaluate a funnel builder such as CartFlows, FunnelKit, WPFunnels or One Click Upsell Funnel. For email-driven follow-up, investigate automation such as AutomateWoo. Select one primary tool per selling moment, verify current vendor details, and measure the result rather than assuming any plugin guarantees higher sales.
